1 José deu as seguintes ordens ao administrador de sua casa: "Encha as bagagens desses homens com todo o mantimento que puderem carregar e coloque a prata de cada um na boca de sua bagagem.2 Depois coloque a minha taça, a taça de prata, na boca da bagagem do caçula, juntamente com a prata paga pelo trigo". E ele fez tudo conforme as ordens de José.3 Assim que despontou a manhã, despediram os homens com os seus jumentos.4 Ainda não tinham se afastado da cidade, quando José disse ao administrador de sua casa: "Vá atrás daqueles homens e, quando os alcançar, diga-lhes: Por que retribuíram o bem com o mal?5 Não é esta a taça que o meu senhor usa para beber e para fazer adivinhações? Vocês cometeram grande maldade! "6 Quando ele os alcançou, repetiu-lhes essas palavras.7 Mas eles lhe responderam: "Por que o meu senhor diz isso? Longe dos seus servos fazer tal coisa!8 Nós lhe trouxemos de volta, da terra de Canaã, a prata que encontramos na boca de nossa bagagem. Como roubaríamos prata ou ouro da casa do seu senhor?9 Se algum dos seus servos for encontrado com ela, morrerá; e nós, os demais, seremos escravos do meu senhor".10 E disse ele: "Concordo. Somente quem for encontrado com ela será meu escravo; os demais estarão livres".11 Cada um deles descarregou depressa a sua bagagem e abriu-a.12 O administrador começou então a busca, desde a bagagem do mais velho até a do mais novo. E a taça foi encontrada na bagagem de Benjamim.13 Diante disso, eles rasgaram as suas vestes. Em seguida, todos puseram a carga de novo em seus jumentos e retornaram à cidade.14 Quando Judá e seus irmãos chegaram à casa de José, ele ainda estava lá. Então eles se lançaram ao chão perante ele.15 E José lhes perguntou: "Que foi que vocês fizeram? Vocês não sabem que um homem como eu tem poder para adivinhar? "16 Respondeu Judá: "O que diremos a meu senhor? Que podemos falar? Como podemos provar nossa inocência? Deus trouxe à luz a culpa dos teus servos. Agora somos escravos do meu senhor, como também aquele que foi encontrado com a taça".17 Disse, porém, José: "Longe de mim fazer tal coisa! Somente aquele que foi encontrado com a taça será meu escravo. Os demais podem voltar em paz para a casa do seu pai".18 Então Judá dirigiu-se a ele, dizendo: "Por favor, meu senhor, permite-me dizer-te uma palavra. Não se acenda a tua ira contra o teu servo, embora sejas igual ao próprio faraó.19 Meu senhor perguntou a estes seus servos se ainda tínhamos pai e algum outro irmão.20 E nós respondemos: Temos um pai já idoso, cujo filho caçula nasceu-lhe em sua velhice. O irmão deste já morreu, e ele é o único filho da mesma mãe que restou, e seu pai o ama muito.21 "Então disseste a teus servos que o trouxessem a ti para que os teus olhos pudessem vê-lo.22 E nós respondemos a meu senhor que o jovem não poderia deixar seu pai, pois, caso o fizesse, seu pai morreria.23 Todavia disseste a teus servos que se o nosso irmão caçula não viesse conosco, nunca mais veríamos a tua face.24 Quando voltamos a teu servo, a meu pai, contamos-lhe o que o meu senhor tinha dito.25 "Quando o nosso pai nos mandou voltar para comprar um pouco mais de comida,26 nós lhe dissemos: Só poderemos voltar para lá, se o nosso irmão caçula for conosco. Pois não poderemos ver a face daquele homem, a não ser que o nosso irmão caçula esteja conosco.27 "Teu servo, meu pai, nos disse então: ‘Vocês sabem que minha mulher me deu apenas dois filhos.28 Um deles se foi, e eu disse: Com certeza foi despedaçado. E até hoje, nunca mais o vi.29 Se agora vocês também levarem este de mim, e algum mal lhe acontecer, a tristeza que me causarão fará com que os meus cabelos brancos desçam à sepultura’.30 "Agora, pois, se eu voltar a teu servo, a meu pai, sem levar o jovem conosco, logo que meu pai, que é tão apegado a ele,31 perceber que o jovem não está conosco, morrerá. Teus servos farão seu velho pai descer seus cabelos brancos à sepultura com tristeza.32 "Além disso, teu servo garantiu a segurança do jovem a seu pai, dizendo-lhe: Se eu não o trouxer de volta, suportarei essa culpa diante de ti pelo resto da minha vida!33 "Por isso agora te peço, por favor, deixa o teu servo ficar como escravo do meu senhor no lugar do jovem e permite que ele volte com os seus irmãos.34 Como poderei eu voltar a meu pai sem levar o jovem comigo? Não! Não posso ver o mal que sobreviria a meu pai".

1 Later, Joseph told the servant in charge of his house: »Fill the men’s grain sacks with as much as they can hold and put their money in the sacks.2 »Also put my silver cup in the sack of the youngest brother.« The servant did as he was told.3 When it was light the men took their donkeys and left.4 They just left the city and were not far off, when Joseph said to the man in charge of his house: »Follow the men and when you overtake them, say to them: ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?5 »‘Is this the cup that my master drinks from and that he uses for telling the future? What you have done is evil!’«6 When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them.7 They answered him: »What do you mean, Sir, by talking like this? We swear that we have done no such thing.8 »You know that we brought back to you from the land of Canaan the money we found in the top of our sacks. Why should we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?9 »If you find that one of us has the cup, then kill him. The rest of us will become your slaves.«10 »Good!« the man replied. »I would do what you have said. But only the one who has the cup will become my slave. The rest of you can go free.«11 Each of the brothers quickly put his sack on the ground and opened it.12 Joseph’s servant started searching the sacks. They began with the one that belonged to the oldest brother. When he came to Benjamin’s sack, he found the cup.13 This upset the brothers so much that they began tearing their clothes in sorrow. Then they loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.14 When Judah and his brothers got there, Joseph was still at home. So they bowed down to Joseph.15 He asked them: »What have you done? Did you not know I could find out?«16 »Sir, what can we say?« Judah replied. »How can we prove we are innocent? God has shown that we are guilty. And now all of us are your slaves, especially the one who had the cup.«17 He said: »It is far from me that I should do this. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant. As for you, you go in peace to your father.«18 Judah went up to Joseph and said: »Please, Sir, let me speak openly with you. Do not be angry with me, although you are equal to Pharaoh.19 »Sir, you asked us, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’20 »We answered, ‘We have a father who is old and a younger brother born to him when he was already old. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’21 ‘Then you said to us, ‘Bring him here to me so that I can see him myself.’22 »We replied, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If the boy leaves him, his father will die.’23 »Then you said you will not be admitted to my presence again unless your youngest brother comes with you.’24 »We went back and told our father what you said.25 »He told us to return and buy a little food.26 »We answered, ‘We cannot go. We will not be admitted to the man’s presence unless our youngest brother is with us. We can go only if our youngest brother also goes.’27 »Our father said, ‘You know that my wife Rachel bore me only two sons.28 »‘One has already left me. He must have been torn to pieces by wild animals, because I have not seen him since he left.29 »‘If you take this one from me now and something happens to him, the sorrow you would cause me would kill me, as old as I am.’30 »That is why Benjamin must be with us when I go back to my father. He loves him so much31 »that he will die if Benjamin does not come back with me.32 »I promised my father I would bring him home safely.
