1 De novo os israelitas fizeram o que o Senhor reprova, e durante sete anos ele os entregou nas mãos dos midianitas.2 Os midianitas dominaram Israel; por isso os israelitas fizeram para si esconderijos nas montanhas, nas cavernas e nas fortalezas.3 Sempre que os israelitas faziam as suas plantações, os midianitas, os amalequitas e outros povos da região a leste deles as invadiam.4 Acampavam na terra e destruíam as plantações ao longo de todo o caminho, até Gaza, e não deixavam nada vivo em Israel, nem ovelhas nem gado nem jumentos.5 Eles subiam trazendo os seus animais e suas tendas, e vinham como enxames de gafanhotos; era impossível contar os homens e os seus camelos. Invadiam a terra para devastá-la.6 Por causa de Midiã, Israel empobreceu tanto que os israelitas clamaram por socorro ao Senhor.7 Quando os israelitas clamaram ao Senhor por causa de Midiã,8 ele lhes enviou um profeta, que disse: "Assim diz o Senhor, o Deus de Israel: ‘Tirei vocês do Egito, da terra da escravidão.9 Eu os livrei do poder do Egito e das mãos de todos os seus opressores. Expulsei-os e dei a vocês a terra deles.10 E também disse a vocês: Eu sou o Senhor, o seu Deus; não adorem os deuses dos amorreus, em cuja terra vivem, mas vocês não me deram ouvidos’ ".11 Então o Anjo do Senhor veio e sentou-se sob a grande árvore de Ofra, que pertencia ao abiezrita Joás. Gideão, filho de Joás, estava malhando o trigo num tanque de prensar uvas, para escondê-lo dos midianitas.12 Então o anjo do Senhor apareceu a Gideão e lhe disse: "O Senhor está com você, poderoso guerreiro".13 "Ah, Senhor", Gideão respondeu, "se o Senhor está conosco, por que aconteceu tudo isso? Onde estão todas as suas maravilhas que os nossos pais nos contam quando dizem: ‘Não foi o Senhor que nos tirou do Egito? ’ Mas agora o Senhor nos abandonou e nos entregou nas mãos de Midiã".14 O Senhor se voltou para ele e disse: "Com a força que você tem, vá libertar Israel das mãos de Midiã. Não sou eu quem o está enviando? "15 "Ah, Senhor", respondeu Gideão, "como posso libertar Israel? Meu clã é o menos importante de Manassés, e eu sou o menor da minha família".16 "Eu estarei com você", respondeu o Senhor, "e você derrotará todos os midianitas como se fossem um só homem".17 E Gideão prosseguiu: "Se de fato posso contar com o teu favor, dá-me um sinal de que és tu que está falando comigo.18 Peço-te que não vás embora até que eu volte e traga minha oferta e a coloque diante de ti". E o Senhor respondeu: "Esperarei até você voltar".19 Gideão foi para casa, preparou um cabrito, e com uma arroba de farinha fez pães sem fermento. Pôs a carne num cesto e o caldo numa panela, trouxe-os para fora e ofereceu-os a ele sob a grande árvore.20 E o Anjo de Deus lhe disse: "Apanhe a carne e os pães sem fermento, ponha-os sobre esta rocha e derrame o caldo". Gideão assim o fez.21 Com a ponta do cajado que estava em sua mão, o Anjo do Senhor tocou a carne e os pães sem fermento. Fogo subiu da rocha, consumindo a carne e os pães. E o Anjo do Senhor desapareceu.22 Quando Gideão viu que era o Anjo do Senhor, exclamou: "Ah, Senhor Soberano! Vi o Anjo do Senhor face a face! "23 Disse-lhe, porém, o Senhor: "Paz seja com você! Não tenha medo. Você não morrerá".24 Gideão construiu ali um altar em honra do Senhor e lhe deu este nome: O Senhor é Paz. Até hoje o altar está em Ofra dos abiezritas.25 Naquela mesma noite o Senhor lhe disse: "Separe o segundo novilho do rebanho de seu pai, aquele de sete anos de idade. Despedace o altar de Baal, que pertence a seu pai, e corte o poste sagrado que está ao lado do altar.26 Depois faça um altar para o Senhor, para o seu Deus, no topo desta elevação. Ofereça o segundo novilho em holocausto com a madeira do poste sagrado que você irá cortar".27 Assim Gideão chamou dez dos seus servos e fez como o Senhor lhe ordenara. Mas, com medo da sua família e dos homens da cidade, fez tudo de noite, e não durante o dia.28 De manhã, quando os homens da cidade se levantaram, lá estava demolido o altar de Baal, com o poste sagrado ao seu lado, cortado, e com o segundo novilho sacrificado no altar recém-construído!29 Perguntaram uns aos outros: "Quem fez isso? " Depois de investigar, concluíram: "Foi Gideão, filho de Joás".30 Os homens da cidade disseram a Joás: "Traga seu filho para fora. Ele deve morrer, pois derrubou o altar de Baal e quebrou o poste sagrado que ficava ao seu lado".31 Joás, porém, respondeu à multidão hostil que o cercava, "Vocês vão defender a causa de Baal? Estão tentando salvá-lo? Quem lutar por ele será morto pela manhã! Se Baal fosse realmente um deus, poderia defender-se quando derrubaram o seu altar".32 Por isso naquele dia chamaram Gideão de "Jerubaal", dizendo: "Que Baal dispute com ele, pois derrubou o altar de Baal".33 Nesse meio tempo, todos os midianitas, amalequitas e outros povos que vinham do leste uniram os seus exércitos, atravessaram o Jordão e acamparam no vale de Jezreel.34 Então o Espírito do Senhor apoderou-se de Gideão, e ele, com toque de trombeta, convocou os abiezritas para segui-lo.35 Enviou mensageiros a todo o Manassés, chamando-o às armas, e também a Aser, a Zebulom e a Naftali, que também subiram ao seu encontro.36 E Gideão disse a Deus: "Quero saber se vais libertar Israel por meu intermédio, como prometeste.37 Vê, colocarei uma porção de lã na eira. Se o orvalho molhar apenas a lã e todo o chão estiver seco, saberei que tu libertarás Israel por meu intermédio, como prometeste".38 E assim aconteceu. Gideão levantou-se logo cedo no dia seguinte, torceu a lã e encheu uma tigela de água do orvalho.39 Disse ainda Gideão a Deus: "Não se acenda a tua ira contra mim. Deixa-me fazer só mais um pedido. Permite-me fazer mais um teste com a lã. Desta vez faze ficar seca a lã e o chão coberto de orvalho".40 E Deus assim fez naquela noite. Somente a lã estava seca; o chão estava todo coberto de orvalho.

1 Again the people of Israel sinned against Jehovah. Therefore he let the people of Midian rule them for seven years.2 The Midianites were very oppressive over Israel. So much so that the people of Israel hid from them in caves and other safe places in the mountains.3 When the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites along with the desert tribes attacked them.4 They camped on the land and destroyed the crops as far south as Gaza. They took all the sheep, cattle, and donkeys, and left nothing for the Israelites to live on.5 They came with their livestock and tents, as thick as locusts. It was impossible to count the men and their camels. They entered the land and destroyed it.6 Israel was helpless against them.7 The people of Israel cried out to Jehovah for help against the Midianites.8 Then Jehovah sent a man, a prophet, to the Israelites. He said to them: »Jehovah, the God of Israel says, ‘It was I who brought you out of slavery in Egypt.9 »‘I rescued you from the Egyptians and from the people who fought you in this land. I drove them out as you advanced. I gave you their land.10 »‘I said to you: ‘I am Jehovah your God. You should not worship the gods of the Amorites, whose land you are now living in. But you have not listened to me.’«11 The angel of Jehovah came to the village of Ophrah. He sat under the oak tree that belonged to Joash, a man of the clan of Abiezer. His son Gideon was secretly threshing wheat in a wine press, so that the Midianites would not see him.12 Jehovah’s angel appeared to him there and said: »Jehovah is with you, mighty man of valor!«13 Gideon said to him: »May I ask, sir, why has all this happened to us if Jehovah is with us? What happened to all the wonderful things that our fathers told us Jehovah used to do, how he brought them out of Egypt? Jehovah has abandoned us. He left us to the mercy of the Midianites.«14 Jehovah answered him: »Go in the strength you have and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you.«15 Gideon replied: »But Jehovah, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh. I am the least important member of my family.«16 Jehovah answered: »You can do it. I will help you. You will crush the Midianites as easily as if they were only one man.«17 Gideon replied: »If you are pleased with me, give me proof that you are really Jehovah.18 »Please do not leave until I return and bring you an offering.« Jehovah said: »I will stay until you come back.«19 So Gideon went into his house and cooked a young goat and used a bushel of flour to make bread without any yeast. He put the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot, brought them to Jehovah’s angel under the oak tree, and gave them to him.20 The angel told him: »Put the meat and the bread on this rock, and pour the broth over them.« Gideon did so.21 Jehovah’s angel reached out and touched the meat and the bread with the end of the stick he was holding. Fire came out of the rock and burned up the meat and the bread. Then the angel disappeared.22 With that Gideon realized that it was Jehovah’s angel he saw. He said in terror: »Sovereign Lord Jehovah! I have seen your angel face-to-face!«23 Jehovah told him: »Peace. Do not be afraid. You will not die.«24 Gideon built an altar to Jehovah there and named it: »Jehovah is Peace.« Jehovah-shalom It is still standing at Ophrah and belongs to the clan of Abiezer.25 That night Jehovah told Gideon: »Take your father’s bull and another seven year old bull, tear down your father’s altar to Baal, and cut down the symbol of the goddess Asherah, that is beside it.26 »Build a well-constructed altar to Jehovah your God on top of this mound. Take the second bull and burn it as a whole offering. Cut down the symbol of Asherah and use it for firewood.«27 So Gideon took ten of his servants and did what Jehovah instructed him to do. He was afraid of his family and the people in town, so he did it at night.28 The people in town got up early the next morning. They found that the altar to Baal and the symbol of Asherah had been cut down. The second bull had been burned on the altar that was built there.29 They asked each other: »Who did this?« They investigated and found out that Gideon, son of Joash, did it.30 They said to Joash: »Bring your son here. We will kill him!« He tore down the altar to Baal and cut down the symbol of Asherah!31 Joash replied: »Are you arguing for Baal? Are you defending him? Anyone who argues for him will be killed before morning. If Baal really is a god he can defend himself. It is his altar that was torn down.«32 From then on Gideon was known as Jerubbaal, because Joash said: »Let Baal defend himself for his altar was torn down.«33 The Midianites, Amalekites, and the desert tribes assembled, crossed the Jordan River, and camped in Jezreel Valley.34 The Spirit of Jehovah took control of Gideon. He blew a trumpet to call the men of the clan of Abiezer to follow him.35 He sent messengers throughout the territory of both parts of Manasseh to call them to follow him. He sent messengers to the tribes of Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they also came to join him.36 Gideon said to God: »You have said you will rescue Israel using me.37 »Look I will place wool on the threshing floor where we thresh the wheat. If in the morning there is dew only on the wool but not on the ground, I will know that you are going to use me to rescue Israel.«38 That is what happened. When Gideon got up early the next morning, he squeezed the wool and wrung enough dew out of it to fill a bowl with water.39 Then Gideon said to God: »Do not be angry with me. Allow me to speak just once more. Please let me make one more test with the wool. This time let the wool be dry, and the ground wet.«40 That night God did it. The next morning the wool was dry, but the ground was wet with dew.
