1 Quando Josafá, rei de Judá, voltou em segurança ao seu palácio em Jerusalém,2 o vidente Jeú, filho de Hanani, saiu ao seu encontro e lhe disse: "Será que você devia ajudar os ímpios e amar aqueles que odeiam o Senhor? Por causa disso, a ira do Senhor está sobre você.3 Contudo, existe em você algo de bom, pois você livrou a terra dos postes sagrados e buscou a Deus de todo o seu coração".4 Josafá morava em Jerusalém; e saiu de novo entre o povo, desde Berseba até os montes de Efraim, fazendo-o voltar para o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados.5 Ele nomeou juízes, em cada uma das cidades fortificadas de Judá,6 dizendo-lhes: "Considerem atentamente aquilo que fazem, pois vocês não estão julgando para o homem, mas para o Senhor, que estará com vocês sempre que derem um veredicto.7 Agora, que o temor do Senhor esteja sobre vocês. Julguem com cuidado, pois com o Senhor, o nosso Deus, não há injustiça nem parcialidade nem suborno".8 Também em Jerusalém nomeou Josafá alguns dos levitas, dos sacerdotes e dos chefes de famílias israelitas para julgarem questões da lei do Senhor e resolverem pendências dos habitantes.9 Deu-lhes as seguintes ordens: "Vocês devem servir com fidelidade e com coração íntegro, no temor do Senhor.10 Em cada caso que chegar a vocês da parte dos seus irmãos israelitas das outras cidades, seja caso de derramamento de sangue sejam questões referentes à lei, aos mandamentos, aos decretos ou às ordenanças, vocês deverão adverti-los de que não pequem contra o Senhor; caso contrário a ira dele virá sobre vocês e sobre eles. Façam assim, e vocês não pecarão.11 "Amarias, o sumo sacerdote, estará com vocês para decidir qualquer questão referente à lei do Senhor; Zebadias, filho de Ismael, líder da tribo de Judá, estará com vocês para decidir qualquer questão civil; e os levitas atuarão como oficiais diante de vocês. Cumpram seus deveres com coragem, e esteja o Senhor com aqueles que agirem corretamente".

1 And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to King Jehoshaphat, Should you help the wicked, and love those who hate Yahweh? For this thing wrath is on you from before Yahweh.3 Nevertheless there are good things found in you, in that you have put away the Asheroth out of the land, and have set your heart to seek God.4 And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again among the people from Beer-sheba to the hill-country of Ephraim, and brought them back to Yahweh, the God of their fathers.5 And he set judges in the land throughout all the fortified cities of Judah, city by city,6 and said to the judges, Consider what you{+} do: for you{+} do not judge for man, but for Yahweh; and [he is] with you{+} in the judgment.7 Now therefore let the fear of Yahweh be on you{+}; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with Yahweh our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.8 Moreover in Jerusalem Jehoshaphat set of the Levites and the priests, and of the heads of the fathers' [houses] of Israel, for the judgment of Yahweh, and for the controversies of the inhabitants of Jerusalem.9 And he charged them, saying, Thus you{+} will do in the fear of Yahweh, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.10 And whenever any controversy will come to you{+} from your{+} brothers who dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and ordinances, you{+} will warn them, so they will not be guilty toward Yahweh, and that wrath does not come upon you{+} and on your{+} brothers: do this, and you{+} will not be guilty.11 And, look, Amariah the chief priest is over you{+} in all matters of Yahweh; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the leader of the house of Judah, in all the king's matters: also the Levites will be officers before you{+}. Deal courageously, and Yahweh will be with the good.
