1 Como prisioneiro no Senhor, rogo-lhes que vivam de maneira digna da vocação que receberam.2 Sejam completamente humildes e dóceis, e sejam pacientes, suportando uns aos outros com amor.3 Façam todo o esforço para conservar a unidade do Espírito pelo vínculo da paz.4 Há um só corpo e um só Espírito, assim como a esperança para a qual vocês foram chamados é uma só;5 há um só Senhor, uma só fé, um só batismo,6 um só Deus e Pai de todos, que é sobre todos, por meio de todos e em todos.7 E a cada um de nós foi concedida a graça, conforme a medida repartida por Cristo.8 Por isso é que foi dito: "Quando ele subiu em triunfo às alturas, levou cativo muitos prisioneiros, e deu dons aos homens".9 ( Que significa "ele subiu", senão que também descera às profundezas da terra?10 Aquele que desceu é o mesmo que subiu acima de todos os céus, a fim de encher todas as coisas. )11 E ele designou alguns para apóstolos, outros para profetas, outros para evangelistas, e outros para pastores e mestres,12 com o fim de preparar os santos para a obra do ministério, para que o corpo de Cristo seja edificado,13 até que todos alcancemos a unidade da fé e do conhecimento do Filho de Deus, e cheguemos à maturidade, atingindo a medida da plenitude de Cristo.14 O propósito é que não sejamos mais como crianças, levados de um lado para outro pelas ondas, nem jogados para cá e para lá por todo vento de doutrina e pela astúcia e esperteza de homens que induzem ao erro.15 Antes, seguindo a verdade em amor, cresçamos em tudo naquele que é a cabeça, Cristo.16 Dele todo o corpo, ajustado e unido pelo auxílio de todas as juntas, cresce e edifica-se a si mesmo em amor, na medida em que cada parte realiza a sua função.17 Assim, eu lhes digo, e no Senhor insisto, que não vivam mais como os gentios, que vivem na futilidade dos seus pensamentos.18 Eles estão obscurecidos no entendimento e separados da vida de Deus por causa da ignorância em que estão, devido ao endurecimento dos seus corações.19 Tendo perdido toda a sensibilidade, ele se entregaram à depravação, cometendo com avidez toda espécie de impureza.20 Todavia, não foi assim que vocês aprenderam de Cristo.21 De fato, vocês ouviram falar dele, e nele foram ensinados de acordo com a verdade que está em Jesus.22 Quanto à antiga maneira de viver, vocês foram ensinados a despir-se do velho homem, que se corrompe por desejos enganosos,23 a serem renovados no modo de pensar e24 a revestir-se do novo homem, criado para ser semelhante a Deus em justiça e em santidade provenientes da verdade.25 Portanto, cada um de vocês deve abandonar a mentira e falar a verdade ao seu próximo, pois todos somos membros de um mesmo corpo.26 "Quando vocês ficarem irados, não pequem". Apazigüem a sua ira antes que o sol se ponha,27 e não dêem lugar ao diabo.28 O que furtava não furte mais; antes trabalhe, fazendo algo de útil com as mãos, para que tenha o que repartir com quem estiver em necessidade.29 Nenhuma palavra torpe saia da boca de vocês, mas apenas a que for útil para edificar os outros, conforme a necessidade, para que conceda graça aos que a ouvem.30 Não entristeçam o Espírito Santo de Deus, com o qual vocês foram selados para o dia da redenção.31 Livrem-se de toda amargura, indignação e ira, gritaria e calúnia, bem como de toda maldade.32 Sejam bondosos e compassivos uns para com os outros, perdoando-se mutuamente, assim como Deus perdoou vocês em Cristo.

1 I, then, the prisoner for the Master's sake, entreat you to live and act as becomes those who have received the call that you have received–2 with all lowliness of mind and unselfishness, and with patience, bearing with one another lovingly, and earnestly striving to maintain,3 in the uniting bond of peace, the unity given by the Spirit.4 There is but one body and but one Spirit, as also when you were called you had one and the same hope held out to you.5 There is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism,6 and one God and Father of all, who rules over all, acts through all, and dwells in all.7 Yet to each of us individually grace was given, measured out with the munificence of Christ.8 For this reason Scripture says: »He re-ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and gave gifts to men.«9 (Now this »re-ascended« –what does it mean but that He had first descended into the lower regions of the earth?10 He who descended is the same as He who ascended again far above all the Heavens in order to fill the universe.)11 And He Himself appointed some to be Apostles, some to be Prophets, some to be evangelists, some to be pastors and teachers,12 in order fully to equip His people for the work of serving –for the building up of Christ's body–13 till we all of us arrive at oneness in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God, and at mature manhood and the stature of full-grown men in Christ.14 So we shall no longer be babes nor shall we resemble mariners tossed on the waves and carried about with every changing wind of doctrine according to men's cleverness and unscrupulous cunning, making use of every shifting device to mislead.15 But we shall lovingly hold to the truth, and shall in all respects grow up into union with Him who is our Head, even Christ.16 Dependent on Him, the whole body –its various parts closely fitting and firmly adhering to one another– grows by the aid of every contributory link, with power proportioned to the need of each individual part, so as to build itself up in a spirit of love.17 Therefore I warn you, and I implore you in the name of the Master, no longer to live as the Gentiles in their perverseness live,18 with darkened understandings, having by reason of the ignorance which is deep-seated in them and the insensibility of their moral nature, no share in the Life which God gives.19 Such men being past feeling have abandoned themselves to impurity, greedily indulging in every kind of profligacy.20 But these are not the lessons which you have learned from Christ;21 if at least you have heard His voice and in Him have been taught –and this is true Christian teaching–22 to put away, in regard to your former mode of life, your original evil nature which is doomed to perish as befits its misleading impulses,23 and to get yourselves renewed in the temper of your minds and clothe yourselves24 with that new and better self which has been created to resemble God in the righteousness and holiness which come from the truth.25 For this reason, laying aside falsehood, every one of you should speak the truth to his fellow man; for we are, as it were, parts of one another.26 If angry, beware of sinning. Let not your irritation last until the sun goes down;27 and do not leave room for the Devil.28 He who has been a thief must steal no more, but, instead of that, should work with his own hands in honest industry, so that he may have something of which he can give the needy a share.29 Let no unwholesome words ever pass your lips, but let all your words be good for benefiting others according to the need of the moment, so that they may be a means of blessing to the hearers.30 And beware of grieving the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you have been sealed in preparation for the day of Redemption.31 Let all bitterness and all passionate feeling, all anger and loud insulting language, be unknown among you–and also every kind of malice.32 On the contrary learn to be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has also forgiven you.
