1 Pergunto, pois: Acaso Deus rejeitou o seu povo? De maneira nenhuma! Eu mesmo sou israelita, descendente de Abraão, da tribo de Benjamim.2 Deus não rejeitou o seu povo, o qual de antemão conheceu. Ou vocês não sabem como Elias clamou a Deus contra Israel, conforme diz a Escritura?3 "Senhor, mataram os teus profetas e derrubaram os teus altares; sou o único que sobrou, e agora estão procurando matar-me".4 E qual foi a resposta divina? "Reservei para mim sete mil homens que não dobraram os joelhos diante de Baal".5 Assim, hoje também há um remanescente escolhido pela graça.6 E, se é pela graça, já não é mais pelas obras; se fosse, a graça já não seria graça.7 Que dizer então? Israel não conseguiu aquilo que tanto buscava, mas os eleitos o obtiveram. Os demais foram endurecidos,8 como está escrito: "Deus lhes deu um espírito de atordoamento, olhos para não ver e ouvidos para não ouvir, até o dia de hoje".9 E Davi diz: "Que a mesa deles se transforme em laço e armadilha, pedra de tropeço e retribuição para eles.10 Escurençam-se os seus olhos, para que não consigam ver, e suas costas fiquem encurvadas para sempre".11 Novamente pergunto: Acaso tropeçaram para que ficassem caídos? De maneira nenhuma! Ao contrário, por causa da transgressão deles, veio salvação para os gentios, para provocar ciúme em Israel.12 Mas se a transgressão deles significa riqueza para o mundo, e o seu fracasso, riqueza para os gentios, quanto mais significará a sua plenitude!13 Estou falando a vocês, gentios. Visto que sou apóstolo para os gentios, exalto o meu ministério,14 na esperança de que de alguma forma possa provocar ciúme em meu próprio povo e salvar alguns deles.15 Pois se a rejeição deles é a reconciliação do mundo, o que será a sua aceitação, senão vida dentre os mortos?16 Se é santa a parte da massa que é oferecida como primeiros frutos, toda a massa também o é; se a raiz é santa, os ramos também o serão.17 Se alguns ramos foram cortados, e você, sendo oliveira brava, foi enxertado entre os outros e agora participa da seiva que vem da raiz da oliveira,18 não se glorie contra esses ramos. Se o fizer, saiba que não é você quem sustenta a raiz, mas a raiz a você.19 Então você dirá: "Os ramos foram cortados, para que eu fosse enxertado".20 Está certo. Eles, porém, foram cortados devido à incredulidade, e você permanece pela fé. Não se orgulhe, mas tema.21 Pois se Deus não poupou os ramos naturais, também não poupará você.22 Portanto, considere a bondade e a severidade de Deus: severidade para com aqueles que caíram, mas bondade para com você, desde que permaneça na bondade dele. De outra forma, você também será cortado.23 E quanto a eles, se não continuarem na incredulidade, serão enxertados, pois Deus é capaz de enxertá-los outra vez.24 Afinal de contas, se você foi cortado de uma oliveira brava por natureza e, de maneira antinatural, foi enxertado numa oliveira cultivada, quanto mais serão enxertados os ramos naturais em sua própria oliveira?25 Irmãos, não quero que ignorem este mistério, para que não se tornem presunçosos: Israel experimentou um endurecimento em parte, até que chegasse a plenitude dos gentios.26 E assim todo o Israel será salvo, como está escrito: "Virá de Sião o redentor que desviará de Jacó a impiedade.27 E esta é a minha aliança com eles quando eu remover os seus pecados".28 Quanto ao evangelho, eles são inimigos por causa de vocês; mas quanto à eleição, são amados por causa dos patriarcas,29 pois os dons e o chamado de Deus são irrevogáveis.30 Assim como vocês, que antes eram desobedientes a Deus mas agora receberam misericórdia, graças à desobediência deles,31 assim também agora eles se tornaram desobedientes, a fim de que também recebam agora misericórdia, graças à misericórdia de Deus para com vocês.32 Pois Deus colocou todos sob a desobediência, para exercer misericórdia para com todos.33 Ó profundidade da riqueza da sabedoria e do conhecimento de Deus! Quão insondáveis são os seus juízos, e inescrutáveis os seus caminhos!34 "Quem conheceu a mente do Senhor? Ou quem foi seu conselheiro? "35 "Quem primeiro lhe deu, para que ele o recompense? "36 Pois dele, por ele e para ele são todas as coisas. A ele seja a glória para sempre! Amém.

1 I ask then, Has God cast off His People? No, indeed. Why, I myself am an Israelite, of the posterity of Abraham and of the tribe of Benjamin.2 God has not cast off His People whom He knew beforehand. Or are you ignorant of what Scripture says in speaking of Elijah–how he pleaded with God against Israel, saying,3 »Lord, they have put Thy Prophets to death, and have overthrown Thy altars; and, now that I alone remain, they are thirsting for my blood«?4 But what did God say to him in reply? »I have reserved for Myself 7,000 men who have never bent the knee to Baal.«5 In the same way also at the present time there has come to be a remnant whom God in His grace has selected.6 But if it is in His grace that He has selected them, then His choice is no longer determined by human actions. Otherwise grace would be grace no longer.7 How then does the matter stand? It stands thus. That which Israel are in earnest pursuit of, they have not obtained; but God's chosen servants have obtained it, and the rest have become hardened.8 And so Scripture says, »God has given them a spirit of drowsiness –eyes to see nothing with and ears to hear nothing with– even until now.«9 And David says, »Let their very food become a snare and a trap to them, a stumbling-block and a retribution.10 Let darkness come over their eyes that they may be unable to see, and make Thou their backs continually to stoop.«11 I ask, however, »Have they stumbled so as to be finally ruined?« No, indeed; but by their lapse salvation has come to the Gentiles in order to arouse the jealousy of the descendants of Israel;12 and if their lapse is the enriching of the world, and their overthrow the enriching of the Gentiles, will not still greater good follow their restoration?13 But to you Gentiles I say that, since I am an Apostle specially sent to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry,14 trying whether I can succeed in rousing my own countrymen to jealousy and thus save some of them.15 For if their having been cast aside has carried with it the reconciliation of the world, what will their being accepted again be but Life out of death?16 Now if the firstfruits of the dough are holy, so also is the whole mass; and if the root of a tree is holy, so also are the branches.17 And if some of the branches have been pruned away, and you, although you were but a wild olive, have been grafted in among them and have become a sharer with others in the rich sap of the root of the olive tree,18 beware of glorying over the natural branches. Or if you are so glorying, do not forget that it is not you who uphold the root: the root upholds you.19 »Branches have been lopped off,« you will say, »for the sake of my being grafted in.«20 This is true; yet it was their unbelief that cut them off, and you only stand through your faith.21 Do not be puffed up with pride. Tremble rather–for if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will He spare you.22 Notice therefore God's kindness and God's severity. On those who have fallen His severity has descended, but upon you His kindness has come, provided that you do not cease to respond to that kindness. Otherwise you will be cut off also.23 Moreover, if they turn from their unbelief, they too will be grafted in. For God is powerful enough to graft them in again;24 and if you were cut from that which by nature is a wild olive and contrary to nature were grafted into the good olive tree, how much more certainly will these natural branches be grafted on their own olive tree?25 For there is a truth, brethren, not revealed hitherto, of which I do not wish to leave you in ignorance, for fear you should attribute superior wisdom to yourselves–the truth, I mean, that partial blindness has fallen upon Israel until the great mass of the Gentiles have come in;26 and so all Israel will be saved. As is declared in Scripture, »From Mount Zion a Deliverer will come: He will remove all ungodliness from Jacob;27 and this shall be My Covenant with them; when I have taken away their sins.«28 In relation to the Good News, the Jews are God's enemies for your sakes; but in relation to God's choice they are dearly loved for the sake of their forefathers.29 For God does not repent of His free gifts nor of His call;30 but just as you were formerly disobedient to Him, but now have received mercy at a time when they are disobedient,31 so now they also have been disobedient at a time when you are receiving mercy; so that to them too there may now be mercy.32 For God has locked up all in the prison of unbelief, that upon all alike He may have mercy.33 Oh, how inexhaustible are God's resources and God's wisdom and God's knowledge! How impossible it is to search into His decrees or trace His footsteps!34 »Who has ever known the mind of the Lord, or shared His counsels?«35 »Who has first given God anything, so as to receive payment in return?«36 For the universe owes its origin to Him, was created by Him, and has its aim and purpose in Him. To Him be the glory throughout the Ages! Amen.
