1 Estas são as últimas palavras de Davi:

"Isto é o que diz Davi, filho de Jessé;

Davi, que foi tão exaltado,

Davi, o homem ungido pelo Deus de Jacó,

Davi, o amável salmista de Israel.

2 "O Espírito do Senhor fala por meu intermédio;

suas palavras estão em minha língua.

3 O Deus de Israel falou,

a Rocha de Israel me disse:

‘Aquele que governa com justiça,

que governa no temor de Deus,

4 é como a luz da manhã ao nascer do sol,

como a manhã sem nuvens,

como o brilho do sol

que faz crescer a grama nova depois da chuva’.

5 "Acaso não foi minha família que Deus escolheu?

Sim, ele fez comigo uma aliança sem fim,

bem definida e garantida nos mínimos detalhes;

ele me dará segurança e êxito.

6 Os perversos, porém, são como espinhos lançados fora,

pois ferem a mão de quem os toca.

7 É preciso usar ferramentas de ferro para cortá-los;

serão inteiramente consumidos pelo fogo".

8 Estes são os nomes dos guerreiros mais valentes de Davi. O primeiro era Jabesão, o hacmonita, líder dos Três, isto é, dos três guerreiros mais valentes dentre os soldados de Davi. Certa ocasião, usou sua lança para matar oitocentos soldados inimigos numa só batalha.

9 O segundo era Eleazar, filho de Dodô, descendente de Aoí. Ele era um dos três guerreiros que estavam com Davi quando enfrentaram os filisteus depois que todo o exército israelita havia recuado. 10 Eleazar matou filisteus até que sua mão ficou cansada demais para levantar a espada, e o Senhor lhe deu grande vitória naquele dia. Quando o exército voltou, os soldados só tiveram de recolher os despojos.

11 Depois dele vinha Samá, filho de Agé, de Harar. Certa ocasião, os filisteus se reuniram em Leí e atacaram os israelitas numa plantação de lentilhas. O exército israelita fugiu, 12 mas Samá permaneceu em sua posição no meio do campo e derrotou os filisteus. Desse modo, o Senhor lhe deu grande vitória.

13 Durante a colheita, quando Davi estava na caverna de Adulão, o exército filisteu acampou no vale de Refaim. Os Três — que faziam parte dos Trinta, um grupo de elite entre os valentes de Davi — desceram para encontrá-lo em Adulão. 14 Nessa ocasião, Davi estava na fortaleza, e um destacamento filisteu havia ocupado a cidade de Belém.

15 Davi comentou: "Ah, como seria bom beber a água pura do poço que fica junto ao portão de Belém!". 16 Então os Três atravessaram as fileiras dos filisteus, tiraram água do poço e a trouxeram a Davi. Ele, porém, se recusou a bebê-la. Em vez disso, derramou-a no chão como oferta ao Senhor. 17 "Que o Senhor não permita que eu beba desta água!", exclamou. "Ela é tão preciosa quanto o sangue destes homens que arriscaram a vida para trazê-la." E Davi não a bebeu. Esses são exemplos dos feitos desses três guerreiros.

18 Abisai, filho de Zeruia, irmão de Joabe, era líder dos Trinta. Certa ocasião, usou sua lança para matar trezentos soldados inimigos numa só batalha. Foi por causa de feitos como esse que ele se tornou tão famoso quanto os Três. 19 Abisai era o mais conhecido dos Trinta e era seu comandante, embora não fosse um dos Três.

20 Também havia Benaia, filho de Joiada, soldado valente de Cabzeel. Realizou muitos feitos heroicos, como matar dois grandes guerreiros de Moabe. Em outra ocasião, num dia de neve, perseguiu um leão até uma cova e o matou. 21 Uma vez, com apenas um cajado, matou um imponente guerreiro egípcio armado com uma lança. Benaia arrancou a lança da mão do egípcio e com ela o matou. 22 Feitos como esses tornaram Benaia tão famoso quanto os três guerreiros mais valentes. 23 Foi mais honrado que qualquer outro membro dos Trinta, embora não fosse um dos Três. Davi o nomeou comandante de sua guarda pessoal.

24 Entre os Trinta estavam:

Asael, irmão de Joabe;

Elanã, filho de Dodô, de Belém;

25 Samá, de Harode;

Elica, de Harode;

26 Helez, de Pelom;

Ira, filho de Iques, de Tecoa;

27 Abiezer, de Anatote;

Sibecai, de Husate;

28 Zalmom, de Aoí;

Maarai, de Netofate;

29 Helede, filho de Baaná, de Netofate;

Itai, filho de Ribai, de Gibeá, na terra de Benjamim;

30 Benaia, de Piratom;

Hurai, de Naal-Gaás;

31 Abi-Albom, de Arbate;

Azmavete, de Baurim;

32 Eliaba, de Saalbom;

os filhos de Jasém;

Jônatas, 33 filho de Sage, de Harar;

Aião, filho de Sarar, de Harar;

34 Elifelete, filho de Aasbai, de Maaca;

Eliã, filho de Aitofel, de Gilo;

35 Hezro, do Carmelo;

David the son of Jesse says,

the man who was raised on high says,

the anointed of the God of Jacob,

the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 "Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me.

His word was on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said,

the Rock of Israel spoke to me,

‘One who rules over men righteously,

who rules in the fear of God,

4 shall be as the light of the morning when the sun rises,

a morning without clouds,

when the tender grass springs out of the earth,

through clear shining after rain.’

5 Isn’t my house so with God?

Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant,

ordered in all things, and sure,

for it is all my salvation and all my desire.

Won’t he make it grow?

6 But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away,

because they can’t be taken with the hand.

7 The man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear.

They will be utterly burned with fire in their place."

8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb Basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; he was called Adino the Eznite, who killed eight hundred at one time. 9 After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel had gone away. 10 He arose and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand froze to the sword; and Yahweh worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take plunder. 11 After him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines. 12 But he stood in the middle of the plot and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh worked a great victory.

13 Three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 David said longingly, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"

16 The three mighty men broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; but he would not drink of it, but poured it out to Yahweh. 17 He said, "Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?" Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

18 Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. He lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three. 19 Wasn’t he most honorable of the three? Therefore he was made their captain. However he wasn’t included as one of the three.

20 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit in a time of snow. 21 He killed a huge Egyptian, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear. 22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name among the three mighty men. 23 He was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three. David set him over his guard.

24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty: Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, 27 Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, 30 Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash. 31 Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, 32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, 35 Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armor bearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 and Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.
