1 Então Agripa disse a Paulo: "Você pode falar em sua defesa".

Paulo fez um sinal com a mão e começou sua defesa: 2 "Rei Agripa, considero-me feliz de ter hoje a oportunidade de lhe apresentar minha defesa contra todas as acusações feitas pelos líderes judeus, 3 pois sei que conhece bem todos os costumes e controvérsias dos judeus. Portanto, peço que me ouça com paciência.

4 "Como os líderes judeus sabem muito bem, recebi educação judaica completa desde a infância entre meu povo e depois em Jerusalém. 5 Também sabem, e talvez estejam dispostos a confirmar, que vivi como fariseu, a seita mais rígida de nossa religião. 6 Agora estou sendo julgado por causa de minha esperança no cumprimento da promessa feita por Deus a nossos antepassados. 7 De fato, é por isso que as doze tribos de Israel adoram a Deus fervorosamente, dia e noite, e compartilham da mesma esperança que eu. E, no entanto, ó rei, acusam-me por causa dessa esperança! 8 Por que lhes parece tão incrível que Deus ressuscite os mortos?

9 "Eu costumava pensar que era minha obrigação empenhar-me em me opor ao nome de Jesus, o nazareno. 10 Foi exatamente o que fiz em Jerusalém. Com autorização dos principais sacerdotes, fui responsável pela prisão de muitos dentre o povo santo. E eu votava contra eles quando eram condenados à morte. 11 Muitas vezes providenciei que fossem castigados nas sinagogas, a fim de obrigá-los a blasfemar. Eu me opunha a eles com tanta violência que os perseguia até em cidades estrangeiras.

12 "Certo dia, numa dessas missões, dirigia-me a Damasco, autorizado e incumbido pelos principais sacerdotes. 13 Por volta do meio-dia, ó rei, ainda a caminho, uma luz do céu, mais intensa que o sol, brilhou sobre mim e meus companheiros. 14 Todos nós caímos no chão, e eu ouvi uma voz que me dizia em aramaico: ‘Saulo, Saulo, por que você me persegue? Não adianta lutar contra minha vontade’.

15 "‘Quem és tu, Senhor?’, perguntei.

"E o Senhor respondeu: ‘Sou Jesus, a quem você persegue. 16 Agora levante-se, pois eu apareci para nomeá-lo meu servo e minha testemunha. Conte o que viu e o que eu lhe mostrarei no futuro. 17 E eu o livrarei tanto de seu povo como dos gentios. Sim, eu o envio aos gentios 18 para abrir os olhos deles a fim de que se voltem das trevas para a luz, e do poder de Satanás para Deus. Então receberão o perdão dos pecados e a herança entre o povo de Deus, separado pela fé em mim’.

19 "Portanto, rei Agripa, obedeci à visão celestial. 20 Anunciei a mensagem primeiro em Damasco, depois em Jerusalém e em toda a Judeia, e também aos gentios, dizendo que todos devem arrepender-se, voltar-se para Deus e mostrar, por meio de suas boas obras, que mudaram de rumo. 21 Alguns judeus me prenderam no templo por anunciar essa mensagem e tentaram me matar. 22 Mas Deus tem me protegido até este momento, para que eu dê testemunho a todos, dos mais simples até os mais importantes. Não ensino nada além daquilo que os profetas e Moisés disseram que haveria de acontecer, 23 que o Cristo sofreria e seria o primeiro a ressuscitar dos mortos e, desse modo, anunciaria a luz de Deus tanto aos judeus como aos gentios".

24 De repente, Festo gritou: "Paulo, você está louco! O excesso de estudo o fez perder o juízo!".

25 Mas Paulo respondeu: "Não estou louco, excelentíssimo Festo. Digo a mais sensata verdade, 26 e o rei Agripa sabe dessas coisas. Expresso-me com ousadia porque tenho certeza de que esses acontecimentos são todos de conhecimento dele, pois não se passaram em algum canto escondido. 27 Rei Agripa, o senhor crê nos profetas? Eu sei que sim".

28 Então Agripa o interrompeu: "Você acredita que pode me convencer a tornar-me cristão em tão pouco tempo?".

29 Paulo respondeu: "Em pouco ou em muito tempo, peço a Deus que tanto o senhor como os demais aqui presentes se tornem como eu, exceto por estas correntes".

30 Então o rei, o governador, Berenice e todos os outros se levantaram e se retiraram. 31 Enquanto saíam, conversavam entre si e concordaram: "Esse homem não fez nada que mereça morte ou prisão".

32 E Agripa disse a Festo: "Ele poderia ser posto em liberdade se não tivesse apelado a César".

1 Agrippa said to Paul, "You may speak for yourself."

Then Paul stretched out his hand, and made his defense. 2 "I think myself happy, King Agrippa, that I am to make my defense before you today concerning all the things that I am accused by the Jews, 3 especially because you are expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews. Therefore I beg you to hear me patiently.

4 "Indeed, all the Jews know my way of life from my youth up, which was from the beginning among my own nation and at Jerusalem; 5 having known me from the first, if they are willing to testify, that after the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 6 Now I stand here to be judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers, 7 which our twelve tribes, earnestly serving night and day, hope to attain. Concerning this hope I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa! 8 Why is it judged incredible with you if God does raise the dead?

9 "I myself most certainly thought that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 10 I also did this in Jerusalem. I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them. 11 Punishing them often in all the synagogues, I tried to make them blaspheme. Being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

12 "Whereupon as I traveled to Damascus with the authority and commission from the chief priests, 13 at noon, O king, I saw on the way a light from the sky, brighter than the sun, shining around me and those who traveled with me. 14 When we had all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’

15 "I said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’

"He said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 16 But arise, and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose: to appoint you a servant and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will reveal to you; 17 delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles, to whom I send you, 18 to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’

19 "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to them of Damascus, at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 22 Having therefore obtained the help that is from God, I stand to this day testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would happen, 23 how the Christ must suffer, and how, by the resurrection of the dead, he would be first to proclaim light both to these people and to the Gentiles."

24 As he thus made his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are crazy! Your great learning is driving you insane!"

25 But he said, "I am not crazy, most excellent Festus, but boldly declare words of truth and reasonableness. 26 For the king knows of these things, to whom also I speak freely. For I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him, for this has not been done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe."

28 Agrippa said to Paul, "With a little persuasion are you trying to make me a Christian?"

29 Paul said, "I pray to God, that whether with little or with much, not only you, but also all that hear me today, might become such as I am, except for these bonds."

30 The king rose up with the governor and Bernice, and those who sat with them. 31 When they had withdrawn, they spoke to one another, saying, "This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds." 32 Agrippa said to Festus, "This man might have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar."
