1 Jacó seguiu viagem e, por fim, chegou à terra do leste. 2 Viu um poço ao longe e, junto ao poço, no campo, três rebanhos de ovelhas, à espera de que lhes dessem água. Uma pedra pesada cobria a boca do poço.

3 Era costume naquele lugar esperar que todos os rebanhos chegassem para, então, remover a pedra e dar água aos animais. Depois, a pedra era recolocada na boca do poço. 4 Jacó se aproximou dos pastores e perguntou: "De onde vocês são, amigos?".

"Somos de Harã", disseram eles.

5 "Conhecem um homem chamado Labão, neto de Naor?", perguntou Jacó.

"Sim, conhecemos", responderam eles.

6 "Ele vai bem?", perguntou Jacó.

"Sim, vai bem", disseram. "Olhe, ali vem Raquel, filha dele, com o rebanho."

7 Jacó disse: "Ainda é dia claro, cedo demais para recolher os animais. Por que vocês não dão de beber às ovelhas, para que elas possam voltar a pastar?".

8 "Não podemos dar de beber aos animais enquanto não chegarem todos os rebanhos", responderam. "Só então os pastores removem a pedra da boca do poço e damos de beber a todas as ovelhas."

9 Jacó ainda conversava com eles quando Raquel chegou com o rebanho de seu pai, pois era pastora. 10 Uma vez que Raquel era sua prima, filha de Labão, irmão de sua mãe, e as ovelhas pertenciam a seu tio Labão, Jacó foi até o poço, removeu a pedra que o cobria e deu de beber ao rebanho de seu tio. 11 Então Jacó beijou Raquel e chorou em alta voz. 12 Explicou para Raquel que era seu primo por parte do pai dela e filho de Rebeca, tia dela. Raquel foi correndo contar a seu pai, Labão.

13 Assim que Labão soube que seu sobrinho Jacó havia chegado, correu ao seu encontro. Ele o abraçou, o beijou e o levou para casa. Depois que Jacó lhe contou sua história, 14 Labão exclamou: "Você é, de fato, sangue do meu sangue!".

Quando Jacó estava na casa de Labão havia cerca de um mês, 15 Labão lhe disse: "Você não deve trabalhar de graça para mim só porque somos parentes. Diga-me qual deve ser o seu salário".

16 Labão tinha duas filhas. A mais velha se chamava Lia, e a mais nova, Raquel. 17 Os olhos de Lia eram sem brilho, mas Raquel tinha bela aparência e rosto atraente. 18 Visto que Jacó estava apaixonado por Raquel, disse a Labão: "Trabalharei para o senhor por sete anos se me der Raquel, sua filha mais nova, para ser minha esposa".

19 "Melhor entregá-la a você do que a qualquer outro", respondeu Labão. "Fique aqui e trabalhe comigo." 20 Então Jacó trabalhou sete anos por Raquel. Ele a amava tanto que lhe pareceram apenas alguns dias.

21 Chegada a hora, Jacó disse a Labão. "Cumpri minha parte do acordo. Agora, dê-me minha esposa, para que eu me deite com ela."

22 Labão convidou toda a vizinhança e preparou uma grande festa de casamento. 23 À noite, porém, quando estava escuro, Labão tomou Lia e a entregou a Jacó, e Jacó se deitou com ela. 24 (Labão deu sua serva Zilpa a Lia para servi-la.)

25 Na manhã seguinte, quando Jacó acordou, viu que era Lia. Então Jacó perguntou a Labão: "O que o senhor fez comigo? Trabalhei sete anos por Raquel! Por que o senhor me enganou?".

26 Labão respondeu: "Aqui não é costume casar a filha mais nova antes da mais velha. 27 Espere, contudo, até terminar a semana de núpcias, e eu também lhe entregarei Raquel, desde que você prometa trabalhar mais sete anos para mim".

28 Jacó concordou em trabalhar mais sete anos. Uma semana depois de Jacó ter se casado com Lia, Labão lhe entregou Raquel. 29 (Labão deu sua serva Bila a Raquel para servi-la.) 30 Jacó se deitou também com Raquel, a quem ele amava muito mais que a Lia. Então permaneceu ali e trabalhou mais sete anos para Labão.

31 Quando o Senhor viu que Lia não era amada, permitiu que ela tivesse filhos; Raquel, porém, era estéril. 32 Lia engravidou e deu à luz um filho. Chamou-o de Rúben, pois disse: "O Senhor viu minha infelicidade, e agora meu marido me amará".

33 Pouco tempo depois, Lia engravidou novamente e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Simeão, pois disse: "O Senhor ouviu que eu não era amada e me deu outro filho".

34 Lia engravidou pela terceira vez e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Levi, pois disse: "Certamente, desta vez meu marido terá afeição por mim, pois lhe dei três filhos!".

35 Lia engravidou mais uma vez e deu à luz outro filho. Chamou-o de Judá, pois disse: "Agora louvarei ao Senhor!". Então, parou de ter filhos.

1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east. 2 He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the well’s mouth was large. 3 There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the well’s mouth in its place. 4 Jacob said to them, "My relatives, where are you from?"

They said, "We are from Haran."

5 He said to them, "Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?"

They said, "We know him."

6 He said to them, "Is it well with him?"

They said, "It is well. See, Rachel, his daughter, is coming with the sheep."

7 He said, "Behold, it is still the middle of the day, not time to gather the livestock together. Water the sheep, and go and feed them."

8 They said, "We can’t, until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the well’s mouth. Then we will water the sheep."

9 While he was yet speaking with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep, for she kept them. 10 When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother. 11 Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept. 12 Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s relative, and that he was Rebekah’s son. She ran and told her father.

13 When Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things. 14 Laban said to him, "Surely you are my bone and my flesh." Jacob stayed with him for a month. 15 Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?"

16 Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. 17 Leah’s eyes were weak, but Rachel was beautiful in form and attractive. 18 Jacob loved Rachel. He said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel, your younger daughter."

19 Laban said, "It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me."

20 Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her.

21 Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her."

22 Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. 23 In the evening, he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to Jacob. He went in to her. 24 Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant. 25 In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?"

26 Laban said, "It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn. 27 Fulfill the week of this one, and we will give you the other also for the service which you will serve with me for seven more years."

28 Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week. He gave him Rachel his daughter as wife. 29 Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant. 30 He went in also to Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him seven more years.

31 Yahweh saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren. 32 Leah conceived, and bore a son, and she named him Reuben. For she said, "Because Yahweh has looked at my affliction; for now my husband will love me." 33 She conceived again, and bore a son, and said, "Because Yahweh has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this son also." She named him Simeon. 34 She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "Now this time my husband will be joined to me, because I have borne him three sons." Therefore his name was called Levi. 35 She conceived again, and bore a son. She said, "This time I will praise Yahweh." Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.
