1 Abraão se casou outra vez, com uma mulher chamada Quetura. 2 Ela deu à luz Zinrã, Jocsã, Medã, Midiã, Isbaque e Suá. 3 Jocsã gerou Sabá e Dedã. Os descendentes de Dedã foram os assuritas, os letusitas e os leumitas. 4 Os filhos de Midiã foram Efá, Éfer, Enoque, Abida e Elda. Todos eles foram descendentes de Abraão por meio de Quetura.

5 Abraão deu tudo que possuía a seu filho Isaque. 6 Antes de morrer, porém, deu presentes aos filhos de suas concubinas e os separou de Isaque, enviando-os para as terras do leste.

7 Abraão viveu 175 anos 8 e morreu em boa velhice, depois de uma vida longa e feliz. Deu o último suspiro e, ao morrer, reuniu-se a seus antepassados. 9 Seus filhos Isaque e Ismael o sepultaram na caverna de Macpela, perto de Manre, no campo de Efrom, filho de Zoar, o hitita. 10 Esse era o campo que Abraão havia comprado dos hititas e onde havia sepultado Sara, sua mulher. 11 Depois da morte de Abraão, Deus abençoou Isaque, e ele se estabeleceu perto de Beer-Laai-Roi, no Neguebe.

12 Este é o relato da família de Ismael, filho de Abraão com Hagar, serva egípcia de Sara. 13 São estes os descendentes de Ismael por nome e clã: Nebaiote, o mais velho, seguido de Quedar, Adbeel, Misbão, 14 Misma, Dumá, Massá, 15 Hadade, Temá, Jetur, Nafis e Quedemá. 16 Esses doze filhos de Ismael deram origem a doze tribos, cada uma com o nome de seu fundador, relacionadas de acordo com o lugar onde se estabeleceram e acamparam. 17 Ismael viveu 137 anos. Deu o último suspiro e, ao morrer, reuniu-se a seus antepassados. 18 Os descendentes de Ismael ocuparam a região que vai de Havilá a Sur, a leste do Egito, na direção de Assur. Ali, viveram em franca oposição a todos os seus parentes.

19 Este é o relato da família de Isaque, filho de Abraão. 20 Quando Isaque tinha 40 anos, casou-se com Rebeca, filha de Betuel, o arameu de Padã-Arã, e irmã de Labão, o arameu.

21 Isaque orou ao Senhor em favor de sua mulher, pois ela não podia ter filhos. O Senhor ouviu a oração de Isaque, e Rebeca ficou grávida de gêmeos. 22 Os dois bebês lutavam um com o outro no ventre da mãe, de modo que ela consultou o Senhor a esse respeito. "Por que isso está acontecendo comigo?", perguntou ela.

23 O Senhor respondeu: "Os filhos em seu ventre se tornarão duas nações. Desde o começo, elas serão rivais. Uma nação será mais forte que a outra, e seu filho mais velho servirá a seu filho mais novo".

24 Quando chegou a hora de dar à luz, Rebeca descobriu que, de fato, eram gêmeos. 25 O primeiro a nascer era ruivo e coberto de pelos; por isso o chamaram de Esaú. 26 Depois, nasceu o outro gêmeo, com a mão agarrada ao calcanhar de Esaú; por isso o chamaram de Jacó. Isaque tinha 60 anos quando os gêmeos nasceram.

27 Os meninos cresceram. Esaú se tornou um caçador habilidoso que vivia ao ar livre, enquanto Jacó era mais pacato e preferia ficar em casa. 28 Isaque amava Esaú porque gostava de comer a carne de caça que ele trazia, mas Rebeca amava Jacó.

29 Certo dia, quando Jacó preparava um ensopado, Esaú chegou do deserto, exausto e faminto. 30 "Estou faminto!", disse ele a Jacó. "Dê-me um pouco desse ensopado vermelho!" (Por isso Esaú também ficou conhecido como Edom.)

31 "Está bem", respondeu Jacó. "Mas, em troca, dê-me seus direitos de filho mais velho."

32 "Estou morrendo de fome!", disse Esaú. "De que me servem meus direitos de filho mais velho?"

33 Mas Jacó disse: "Primeiro, jure que seus direitos de filho mais velho agora são meus". Esaú fez um juramento e, desse modo, vendeu todos os seus direitos de filho mais velho a seu irmão, Jacó.

34 Então Jacó deu a Esaú um pedaço de pão e o ensopado de lentilhas. Esaú comeu, levantou-se e foi embora. Assim, ele desprezou seu direito de filho mais velho.

1 Abraham took another wife, and her name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan became the father of Sheba, and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac, 6 but Abraham gave gifts to the sons of Abraham’s concubines. While he still lived, he sent them away from Isaac his son, eastward, to the east country. 7 These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred seventy-five years. 8 Abraham gave up his spirit, and died at a good old age, an old man, and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9 Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar the Hittite, which is near Mamre, 10 the field which Abraham purchased from the children of Heth. Abraham was buried there with Sarah, his wife. 11 After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac, his son. Isaac lived by Beer Lahai Roi.

12 Now this is the history of the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s servant, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to the order of their birth: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their villages, and by their encampments: twelve princes, according to their nations. 17 These are the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred thirty-seven years. He gave up his spirit and died, and was gathered to his people. 18 They lived from Havilah to Shur that is before Egypt, as you go toward Assyria. He lived opposite all his relatives.

19 This is the history of the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham became the father of Isaac. 20 Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Paddan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian, to be his wife. 21 Isaac entreated Yahweh for his wife, because she was barren. Yahweh was entreated by him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her. She said, "If it is like this, why do I live?" She went to inquire of Yahweh. 23 Yahweh said to her,

"Two nations are in your womb.

Two peoples will be separated from your body.

The one people will be stronger than the other people.

The elder will serve the younger."

24 When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau. 26 After that, his brother came out, and his hand had hold on Esau’s heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

27 The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents. 28 Now Isaac loved Esau, because he ate his venison. Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished. 30 Esau said to Jacob, "Please feed me with some of that red stew, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom.

31 Jacob said, "First, sell me your birthright."

32 Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?"

33 Jacob said, "Swear to me first."

He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.
