1 Jesus voltou ao monte das Oliveiras, 2 mas na manhã seguinte, bem cedo, estava outra vez no templo. Logo se reuniu uma multidão, e ele se sentou e a ensinou. 3 Então os mestres da lei e os fariseus lhe trouxeram uma mulher pega em adultério e a colocaram diante da multidão.

4 "Mestre, esta mulher foi pega no ato de adultério", disseram eles a Jesus. 5 "A lei de Moisés ordena que ela seja apedrejada. O que o senhor diz?"

6 Procuravam apanhá-lo numa armadilha, ao fazê-lo dizer algo que pudessem usar contra ele. Jesus, porém, apenas se inclinou e começou a escrever com o dedo na terra. 7 Eles continuaram a exigir uma resposta, de modo que ele se levantou e disse: "Aquele de vocês que nunca pecou atire a primeira pedra". 8 Então inclinou-se novamente e voltou a escrever na terra.

9 Quando ouviram isso, foram saindo, um de cada vez, começando pelos mais velhos, até que só restaram Jesus e a mulher no meio da multidão. 10 Então Jesus se levantou de novo e disse à mulher: "Onde estão seus acusadores? Nenhum deles a condenou?".

11 "Não, Senhor", respondeu ela.

E Jesus disse: "Eu também não a condeno. Vá e não peque mais".

12 Jesus voltou a falar ao povo e disse: "Eu sou a luz do mundo. Se vocês me seguirem, não andarão no escuro, pois terão a luz da vida".

13 Os fariseus disseram: "Você faz essas declarações a respeito de si mesmo! Seu testemunho não é válido".

14 Jesus respondeu: "Meu testemunho é válido, embora eu mesmo o dê, pois eu sei de onde vim e para onde vou, mas vocês não sabem de onde vim nem para onde vou. 15 Vocês julgam por padrões humanos, mas eu não julgo ninguém. 16 E, mesmo que o fizesse, meu julgamento seria correto, pois não estou sozinho. O Pai, que me enviou, está comigo. 17 A lei de vocês diz que, se duas pessoas concordarem sobre alguma coisa, seu testemunho é aceito como fato. 18 Eu sou uma testemunha, e meu Pai, que me enviou, é a outra".

19 "Onde está seu Pai?", perguntaram eles.

Jesus respondeu: "Uma vez que vocês não sabem quem sou eu, não sabem quem é meu Pai. Se vocês me conhecessem, também conheceriam meu Pai". 20 Jesus fez essas declarações enquanto ensinava na parte do templo onde eram colocadas as ofertas. No entanto, não foi preso, pois ainda não havia chegado sua hora.

21 Mais tarde, Jesus lhes disse outra vez: "Eu vou embora. Vocês procurarão por mim, mas morrerão em seus pecados. Não podem ir para onde eu vou".

22 Os judeus perguntaram: "Será que ele está planejando cometer suicídio? A que ele se refere quando diz: ‘Não podem ir para onde eu vou’?".

23 Jesus prosseguiu: "Vocês são daqui de baixo; eu sou lá de cima. Vocês pertencem a este mundo; eu não. 24 Foi por isso que eu disse que vocês morrerão em seus pecados, pois a menos que creiam que eu sou lá de cima, morrerão em seus pecados".

25 "Quem é você?", perguntaram eles.

Jesus respondeu: "Sou aquele que sempre afirmei ser. 26 Tenho muito que dizer e julgar a respeito de vocês, mas não o farei. Digo ao mundo apenas o que ouvi daquele que me enviou, e ele é inteiramente verdadeiro". 27 Ainda assim, não entenderam que ele lhes falava a respeito do Pai.

28 Então Jesus disse: "Quando vocês me levantarem, entenderão que eu sou o Filho do Homem. Não faço coisa alguma por minha própria conta; digo apenas o que o Pai me ensinou. 29 E aquele que me enviou está comigo; ele não me abandonou, pois sempre faço o que lhe agrada". 30 Muitos que o ouviram dizer essas coisas creram nele.

31 Jesus disse aos judeus que creram nele: "Vocês são verdadeiramente meus discípulos se permanecerem fiéis a meus ensinamentos. 32 Então conhecerão a verdade, e a verdade os libertará".

33 "Mas somos descendentes de Abraão", disseram eles. "Nunca fomos escravos de ninguém. O que quer dizer com ‘Vocês serão libertos’?"

34 Jesus respondeu: "Eu lhes digo a verdade: todo o que peca é escravo do pecado. 35 O escravo não é membro permanente da família, mas o filho faz parte da família, para sempre. 36 Portanto, se o Filho os libertar, vocês serão livres de fato. 37 Sim, eu sei que vocês são descendentes de Abraão. E, no entanto, procuram me matar, pois não há lugar em seu coração para a minha mensagem. 38 Eu lhes digo o que vi quando estava com meu Pai, mas vocês seguem o conselho do pai de vocês".

39 "Nosso pai é Abraão!", declararam eles.

Jesus respondeu: "Se vocês fossem, de fato, filhos de Abraão, seguiriam o exemplo dele. 40 Em vez disso, procuram me matar porque eu lhes disse a verdade que ouvi de Deus. Abraão nunca fez isso. 41 Vocês estão imitando seu verdadeiro pai".

"Não somos filhos ilegítimos!", retrucaram. "O próprio Deus é nosso verdadeiro Pai!"

42 Jesus lhes disse: "Se Deus fosse seu Pai, vocês me amariam, porque eu venho até vocês da parte de Deus. Não estou aqui por minha própria conta, mas ele me enviou. 43 Por que vocês não entendem o que eu digo? É porque nem sequer conseguem me ouvir! 44 Pois são filhos de seu pai, o diabo, e gostam de fazer as coisas perversas que ele deseja. Ele foi assassino desde o princípio. Sempre odiou a verdade, pois não há verdade alguma nele. Quando ele mente, age de acordo com seu caráter, pois é mentiroso e pai da mentira. 45 Portanto, quando eu digo a verdade, é natural que não creiam em mim! 46 Qual de vocês pode me acusar de pecado? E, uma vez que lhes digo a verdade, por que não creem em mim? 47 Quem pertence a Deus ouve as palavras de Deus. Mas vocês não ouvem, pois não pertencem a Deus".

48 "Samaritano endemoninhado!", responderam os líderes judeus. "Não temos dito desde o início que está possuído por demônio?"

49 "Não tenho em mim demônio algum", disse Jesus. "Pelo contrário, honro meu Pai, e vocês me desonram. 50 Eu não procuro minha própria glória; há quem a procure para mim, e ele é o Juiz. 51 Eu lhes digo a verdade: quem obedecer a meu ensino jamais morrerá!"

52 Os líderes judeus disseram: "Agora sabemos que você está possuído por demônio. Até Abraão e os profetas morreram, mas você diz: ‘Quem obedecer a meu ensino jamais morrerá!’. 53 Por acaso você é maior que nosso pai Abraão? Ele morreu, assim como os profetas. Quem você pensa que é?".

54 Jesus respondeu: "Se eu quisesse glória para mim mesmo, essa glória não contaria. Mas é meu Pai quem me glorifica. Vocês dizem: ‘Ele é nosso Deus’, 55 mas nem o conhecem. Eu o conheço. Se eu dissesse que não o conheço, seria tão mentiroso quanto vocês! Mas eu o conheço e lhe obedeço. 56 Seu pai Abraão exultou com a expectativa da minha vinda. Ele a viu e se alegrou".

57 Os líderes judeus disseram: "Você não tem nem cinquenta anos. Como pode dizer que viu Abraão?".

58 Jesus respondeu: "Eu lhes digo a verdade: antes mesmo de Abraão nascer, Eu Sou!". 59 Então apanharam pedras para atirar em Jesus, mas ele se ocultou deles e saiu do templo.

1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle, 4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. What then do you say about her?" 6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of.

But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her." 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.

9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle. 10 Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, "Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"

11 She said, "No one, Lord."

Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."

12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."

13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."

14 Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. 16 Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. 17 It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid. 18 I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."

19 They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?"

Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also." 20 Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. 21 Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can’t come."

22 The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come’?"

23 He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. 24 I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

25 They said therefore to him, "Who are you?"

Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. 26 I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However, he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."

27 They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father. 28 Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things. 29 He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."

30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him. 31 Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32 You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

33 They answered him, "We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?"

34 Jesus answered them, "Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. 35 A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. 36 If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38 I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."

39 They answered him, "Our father is Abraham."

Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40 But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this. 41 You do the works of your father."

They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."

42 Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me. 43 Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. 45 But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me. 46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don’t hear, because you are not of God."

48 Then the Jews answered him, "Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"

49 Jesus answered, "I don’t have a demon, but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 But I don’t seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. 51 Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."

52 Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’ 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"

54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. 55 You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, ‘I don’t know him,’ I would be like you, a liar. But I know him and keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it and was glad."

57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?"

58 Jesus said to them, "Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM."

59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.
