1 Mas o Senhor terá compaixão dos descendentes de Jacob; ele tornará a escolher de novo Israel e há de trazê-los novamente para a sua terra. Muitas nações virão e se juntarão a eles, tornando-se seus fiéis aliados. 2 As nações do mundo os ajudarão a regressar e aqueles que vierem estabelecer-se na sua terra os servirão; aqueles que os escravizaram serão seus escravos; Israel dominará sobre os seus inimigos.

3 Nesse dia, em que o Senhor der ao seu povo descanso das tristezas e dos terrores, das prisões e cadeias por que passaram, 4 dirás assim do rei da Babilónia: "O tirano desaparece, enfim! A sua opressão terminou! 5 O Senhor quebrou o teu bastão de dominador, esmagou o teu poder malvado! 6 Perseguiste os povos com os golpes contínuos da tua raiva odiosa, tiranizaste nações sob as tuas garras. Era insustentável a tua atrocidade! 7 Finalmente, a Terra está sossegada e em descanso! Todo o mundo começa a cantar! 8 Até as árvores dos bosques, as faias e os cedros do Líbano cantam com alegria: ‘Desde que tu caíste, ninguém mais nos incomoda. Até que enfim, estamos em paz!’ "

9 Os habitantes do mundo dos mortos juntam-se em magotes para te receberem quando entrares nos seus domínios. Entre eles estão grandes chefes mundiais e poderosos governantes que vieram esperar-te. 10 E todos chorarão juntos em voz alta: "Também te tornaste em nada, tal como nós!" 11 A tua força e o teu poder desapareceram; foi tudo lançado no mundo dos mortos. Cessou de vez a bela música dos teus palácios. Agora, são os bichinhos o teu lençol; os vermes são o cobertor com que te tapas!

12 Como caíste do céu, ó Lúcifer, estrela matinal! Como foste abatido, tu que enfraqueceste as nações do mundo! 13 Dizias no teu íntimo: "Hei de subir aos céus; levantarei o meu trono acima das estrelas de Deus; ascenderei ao mais alto trono e governarei a partir do monte da assembleia, lá no extremo norte! 14 Subirei aos mais altos céus e serei semelhante ao Altíssimo!"

15 Mas em vez disso serás levado para o mundo dos mortos, lá bem para as profundezas do abismo. 16 Todos os que lá te virem perguntarão espantados: "Então é este quem fazia tremer a Terra e as nações do mundo? 17 É este quem tudo arrasou e fez da Terra um açougue? Quem demoliu as grandes cidades, sem ter a mínima compaixão dos prisioneiros?"

18 Os reis, os grandes chefes das nações jazem, cada um, no seu pomposo mausoléu. 19 Quanto a ti, o teu corpo foi lançado fora da tua sepultura como se fosse um pau seco que não presta. E ali está, de cova aberta, coberto com os cadáveres dos que foram mortos nos combates, tão desprezado como um cadáver espezinhado. 20 Não te juntarás a eles no túmulo, pois destruíste a tua nação e assassinaste o teu povo. Nunca o teu filho te sucederá como rei. 21 Matem os filhos desse malvado! Não deixem que venham a levantar-se, a reconquistar a terra e a tornar a encher o mundo de cidades reconstruídas!

22 "Eu próprio me levantarei contra ele", diz o Senhor dos exércitos, e tirarei aos seus filhos e aos seus netos toda e qualquer possibilidade de virem a ocupar o trono. 23 "Reduzirei a Babilónia a uma terra desolada, cheia de porcos-espinhos, de charcos fétidos e de pântanos insalubres. Varrerei aquela terra com a vassoura da destruição", diz o Senhor dos exércitos.

24 O Senhor dos exércitos jurou e estes são os seus propósitos e os seus planos: 25 "Decidi destruir os exércitos da Assíria, enquanto se encontram em Judá, na minha terra, e esmagá-los, enquanto ocupam as minhas montanhas. O meu povo não mais será escravo deles. 26 E este é o meu plano a aplicar em toda a Terra. Farei isso pela minha força poderosa que é capaz de atuar no mundo inteiro."

27 O Senhor dos exércitos foi quem falou, quem poderá alterar os seus planos? Quando o seu braço se estende para atuar, haverá alguém capaz de o impedir?

28 Esta é a mensagem que veio até mim, no ano em que o rei Acaz morreu: 29 "Não se alegrem, filisteus, pelo facto de ter morrido o rei que vos afligia. A vara quebrou-se, é verdade, mas o seu filho tornar-se-á num açoite ainda mais duro do que o seu pai! Da cobra nascerá uma terrível serpente venenosa que te destruirá! 30 Tratarei dos pobres do meu povo com os cuidados dum pastor; os necessitados estarão em segurança. Quanto a ti, escorraçar-te-ei por meio da fome e da guerra; a ti e aos teus descendentes. 31 Gritem de dor, ó cidades filisteias, vocês estão condenadas, tal como toda a vossa nação! Toda ela está condenada. Eles são como uma nuvem negra de fumaça vinda do norte contra ti. Não há ninguém que vacile naquelas fileiras. 32 Que se dirá, então, aos mensageiros deste povo? Que o Senhor fundou Sião e determinou que os oprimidos do seu povo encontrem um refúgio dentro dos seus muros."

4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!*14.4 proverb: or, taunting speech*14.4 golden…: or, exactress of gold 5 The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers. 6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth. *14.6 a continual…: Heb. a stroke without removing 7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing. 8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. 9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.*14.9 Hell: or, The grave*14.9 chief…: Heb. leaders, or, great goats 10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? 11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. 12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!*14.12 O Lucifer: or, O day star 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; 17 That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?*14.17 opened…: or, did not let his prisoners loose homeward? 18 All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. 19 But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. 20 Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. 21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities. 22 For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD. 23 I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.

24 The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: 25 That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders. 26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. 27 For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back? 28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

29 Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.*14.29 cockatrice: or, adder 30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety: and I will kill thy root with famine, and he shall slay thy remnant. 31 Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.*14.31 none…: or, he shall not be alone*14.31 appointed…: or, assemblies 32 What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation?
