1 Esta é a mensagem que Deus revelou a Isaías, filho de Amós, referente à condenação da Babilónia. 2 Levantem uma bandeira sobre o monte pelado. Gritem alto para os que combatem e façam-lhes sinais com as mãos para que marchem sobre a Babilónia, entrando pelas portas dos poderosos. 3 Fui eu, quem convocou estes exércitos para uma tal intervenção. Chamei aqueles que se orgulham da minha força para fazer este trabalho, a fim de satisfazer a minha ira. 4 Ouçam todo este tumulto sobre as montanhas, como se fosse de uma imensa multidão! Escutem o tumulto e o clamor de muitas nações. É o Senhor dos exércitos que passa revista ao seu exército para a guerra. 5 Foi o Senhor quem os trouxe aqui, vindos de terras distantes; são as suas armas contra ti, ó Babilónia; são os instrumentos que usará para destruir toda a tua terra.

6 Grita de terror, porque chegou o dia do Senhor, a altura em que o Todo-Poderoso te vai esmagar. 7 Os teus braços descaem paralisados de terror; o coração dos mais valentes desfalece de medo. 8 O pavor aperta-te com terríveis angústias, como uma mulher antes do parto. Olham uns para os outros, absolutamente desamparados, enquanto as chamas da cidade a arder se refletem nas vossas faces empalidecidas.

9 Vejam como o dia do Senhor está a chegar, o terrível dia do seu juízo, da sua tremenda ira. A terra será destruída e com ela todos os pecadores. 10 Os céus tornar-se-ão negros por cima da cidade; luz alguma lhes virá, seja do Sol da Lua ou das estrelas. 11 Castigarei o mundo pela sua maldade e o pecador pela sua iniquidade. Esmagarei a arrogância do orgulhoso e humilharei o orgulho dos tiranos. 12 Poucos sobrevirão após eu ter terminado a minha ação. Os homens tornar-se-ão mais raros que o ouro; serão mais raros que o ouro de Ofir. 13 Porque farei abalar os céus com a minha cólera, a minha terrível ira; até a Terra alterará a sua posição no universo. É a manifestação da ira do Senhor dos exércitos.

14 Os exércitos da Babilónia desgastar-se-ão até ficarem exaustos, batendo em retirada para a sua terra, como uma gazela perseguida por cães de caça, ou vagueando perdidos como ovelhas cujo pastor fugiu. 15 Aqueles que não fugirem serão abatidos. 16 Os seus meninos serão despedaçados contra o chão à vista deles; as suas casas serão saqueadas e as mulheres violadas pelos exércitos atacantes. 17 Incitarei contra a Babilónia os medos, que não estimam a prata nem se deleitam com o ouro. 18 Com os seus arcos abaterão os jovens; eles não terão compaixão nem das crianças, nem dos bebés da Babilónia.

19 Então Babilónia, o mais glorioso dos reinos, a fina flor da cultura da Caldeia, será destruída tão completamente como foram Sodoma e Gomorra, as cidades sobre as quais Deus mandou fogo do céu. 20 Nunca mais será reconstruída e habitada. Novas gerações se sucederão umas às outras, mas naquela terra nunca mais viverá ninguém. Nem sequer os nómadas ali acamparão, nem os pastores deixarão os rebanhos ali passar a noite. 21 Os animais selvagens feitos à vida nos desertos, esses sim, habitarão naquele sítio. As suas ruínas ficarão cheias de animais horríveis. Viverão ali corujas do deserto e virão bodes para ali dançar. 22 Hienas e chacais farão dos seus palácios tocas. Os dias da Babilónia estão contados. A hora da sua condenação chegará em breve!

1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see. 2 Lift ye up a banner upon the high mountain, exalt the voice unto them, shake the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for mine anger, even them that rejoice in my highness. 4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, like as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together: the LORD of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.*13.4 like…: Heb. the likeness of 5 They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even the LORD, and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man’s heart shall melt:*13.7 be faint: or, fall down 8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.*13.8 be amazed: Heb. wonder*13.8 one…: Heb. every man at his neighbour*13.8 flames: Heb. faces of the flames 9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. 10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. 11 And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. 12 I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. 14 And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man taketh up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land. 15 Every one that is found shall be thrust through; and every one that is joined unto them shall fall by the sword. 16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished. 17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it. 18 Their bows also shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not spare children.

19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.*13.19 as…: Heb. as the overthrowing 20 It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation: neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there; neither shall the shepherds make their fold there. 21 But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and owls shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.*13.21 wild…: Heb.
