1 Quando o rei Ezequias ouviu o relatório que eles lhe fizeram, rasgou a roupa que trazia vestida, cobriu-se com pano de saco e dirigiu-se ao templo para orar. 2 Disse a Eliaquim, a Sebna e a alguns dos sacerdotes mais velhos para se cobrirem igualmente com pano de saco e irem ter com o profeta Isaías, o filho de Amós, com a seguinte mensagem: 3 "O rei Ezequias manda dizer: ‘Hoje foi um dia de angústia, desonra e blasfémia. É como se uma criança estivesse prestes a nascer e a mãe não tivesse forças para dar à luz. 4 Mas pode bem ser que o Senhor, teu Deus, tenha ouvido os insultos provocatórios do general assírio, dirigidos ao Deus vivo, e o castigue. Oh! Pedimos-te que ores pelos poucos de entre nós que ainda restamos!’ "

5 Esta foi a mensagem que trouxeram a Isaías.

6 Então Isaías respondeu assim: "Digam ao rei Ezequias que o Senhor lhe transmite o seguinte: ‘Não te deixes perturbar por esse discurso do servo do rei da Assíria e pelas suas blasfémias. 7 O rei da Assíria receberá uma notícia em como é requerida, com urgência, a sua presença no país; ele regressará e farei com que o matem ali.’ "

8 O delegado assírio deixou Jerusalém para ir consultar o seu rei que, entretanto, já tinha deixado Laquis e se encontrava a combater em Libna. 9 Pouco tempo depois, trouxeram ao rei assírio a notícia que o rei Tiraca de Cuche se aproximava para o atacar. Mas antes de partir para esse encontro bélico, enviou ainda esta mensagem ao rei Ezequias:

10 "Não te deixes enganar pelo teu Deus em quem confias. Não acredites naquilo que ele te disse que não hei de conquistar Jerusalém. 11 Sabes perfeitamente o que os reis da Assíria fizeram por toda a parte onde têm andado; têm destruído tudo. Porque é que haveria de ser diferente contigo? 12 Alguma vez os deuses das outras nações as livraram? Nações como Gozã, Harã, Rezefe e Éden, da terra de Telessar, os anteriores reis assírios destruíram-nas a todas! 13 Que foi que aconteceu ao rei de Hamate e ao rei de Arpade? Que aconteceu com os reis de Sefarvaim, Hena e Iva?"

14 Ezequias abriu a carta que os mensageiros lhe entregaram e leu-a. Depois dirigiu-se ao templo e apresentou-a perante o Senhor. 15 E orou ao Senhor do seguinte modo: 16 "Ó Senhor dos exércitos, Deus de Israel, que habitas entre os querubins, só tu és o Deus de todos os povos da Terra! Tu fizeste os céus e a Terra! 17 Ouve a minha súplica. Inclina os teus olhos para mim e ouve a minha oração. Vê esta carta do rei Senaqueribe, uma autêntica afronta a ti, o Deus vivo! 18 É verdade, ó Senhor, que os reis da Assíria têm destruído todas essas nações, como diz a carta. 19 Queimaram os seus ídolos, mas não eram deuses nenhuns! Foram destruídos porque eram meros objetos fabricados por homens com madeira e pedra. 20 Agora, ó Senhor, nosso Deus, imploramos-te que nos salves do seu poder e então todos os soberanos da Terra saberão que só tu, Senhor, és Deus!"

21 Então Isaías, o filho de Amós, mandou dizer a Ezequias: "O Senhor, o Deus de Israel, diz o seguinte: ‘Esta é a minha resposta à tua oração sobre Senaqueribe o rei da Assíria. 22 Esta é a resposta que dou ao rei Senaqueribe: A virgem, filha de Sião, não tem medo de ti! A filha de Jerusalém ri-se francamente de ti. 23 Viste bem quem é que desafiaste e quem é que insultaste? Dás-te conta de para quem é que ousaste levantar os olhos com arrogância? Foi para o Santo Deus de Israel! 24 Vanglorias-te, dizendo: "Os meus carros de guerra conquistaram as mais poderosas fortalezas! Sim, nem os mais altos cimos do Líbano são inexpugnáveis para mim! Deitei abaixo cedros gigantes e ciprestes maravilhosos! O meu domínio estende-se às fronteiras mais longínquas! 25 Refresquei-me e matei a sede nos mais variados cursos de água de terras estranhas! Destruí a força do Egito com a planta dos pés!"

26 Ainda não compreendeste que fui eu quem decidiu, há muito tempo, que tudo isso acontecesse e que fui eu quem te deu todo esse poder e que fiz com que tudo se realizasse segundo o que tinha planeado? Os meus planos eram precisamente que derrubasses cidades fortemente muradas e as tornasses em montões de ruínas. 27 Eis a razão por que as nações que conquistaste não tiveram poder para te resistir, antes se fizeram como a erva do campo, murchando debaixo dum calor ardente, como trigo que se queima antes de ficar maduro. 28 Eu conheço-te muito bem; estou ao corrente de todas as tuas idas e vindas, de tudo o que fazes; vi bem a tua raiva contra mim. 29 Por causa da arrogância que mostraste a meu respeito, vou pôr-te um gancho no nariz, um freio nos dentes e fazer-te dar meia volta no caminho em que vieste.’ "

30 Então Deus disse a Ezequias: "Esta será a prova em como sou eu mesmo quem está a libertar a vossa cidade das mãos do rei da Assíria: Ainda este ano ele levantará o cerco e mesmo que seja já demasiado tarde para a sementeira, o grão que nasceu espontaneamente neste outono dar-te-á bastante semente para obteres uma colheita reduzida no próximo ano. Daqui a dois anos já poderão semear e ceifar o vosso trigo, e plantar vinhas e fazer a vindima. 31 Os que foram deixados em Judá tomarão de novo raízes no vosso próprio solo; florescerão e se mulplicarão. 32 Porque sairá um resto de Jerusalém e do monte Sião, para repovoar a terra. É o zelo do Senhor dos exércitos que fará com que tudo isto aconteça!

33 Quanto ao rei da Assíria, o seu exército não chegará a entrar em Jerusalém, nem disparará ali as suas armas, nem mesmo desfilará perante as suas portas, nem sequer construirá uma torre para poder atacar as suas muralhas. 34 Regressará à sua terra pelo caminho por onde veio, sem ter penetrado na cidade, diz o Senhor. 35 Eu defenderei e salvarei esta cidade, por causa do meu nome e por causa do meu servo David!"

36 O anjo do Senhor veio até ao campo dos assírios e matou 185 000 soldados das tropas assírias. Pela manhã, viam-se corpos mortos estendidos por toda a parte. 37 Então o rei Senaqueribe da Assíria regressou a Nínive. 38 Um dia, enquanto adorava no templo do deus Nisroque, os seus filhos Adrameleque e Sarezer mataram-no à espada, fugindo em seguida para a terra de Ararat. O seu filho Esar-Hadom ascendeu ao trono.

1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3 And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.*37.3 blasphemy: or, provocation 4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.*37.4 left: Heb. found 5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.*37.7 send…: or, put a spirit into him

8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9 And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11 Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?

14 And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, 16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 17 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. 18 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,*37.18 nations: Heb. lands 19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.*37.19 cast: Heb. given 20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

21 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22 This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24 By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.*37.24 By thy…: Heb. 37 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38 And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.*37.38 Armenia: Heb.
