1 Ezequias adoeceu gravemente, ficando às portas da morte. O profeta Isaías veio visitá-lo. "Põe todos os teus assuntos em ordem", disse-lhe Isaías, "e prepara-te para morreres. O Senhor manda dizer-te que não recuperarás a saúde."

2 Ezequias voltou-se para o lado da parede e orou assim ao Senhor: 3 "Ó Senhor, lembra-te de como eu tenho sido honesto e sincero contigo e como procurei obedecer a tudo o que tens dito!" E começou a chorar intensamente.

4 Então o Senhor mandou outra mensagem a Isaías: 5 "Vai dizer a Ezequias: O Senhor, o Deus de David, teu antepassado, ouviu a tua oração, viu as tuas lágrimas e deixar-te-á viver mais 15 anos. 6 Livrar-te-ei, a ti e a esta cidade, do rei da Assíria; defenderei esta cidade. 7 E esta é a prova daquilo que digo: 8 Farei com que o Sol recue 10 graus, segundo o relógio de sol de Acaz."

E o Sol recuou 10 graus.

9 Quando o rei Ezequias se restabeleceu, escreveu este poema sobre a sua experiência:

10 "Disse no meu íntimo:

vivi metade da minha vida e tenho de deixar tudo.

Ficarei privado do resto dos meus anos

e terei de passar as portas do mundo dos mortos.

11 Nunca mais tornarei a ver o Senhor na terra dos vivos.

Nunca mais verei os meus amigos neste mundo.

12 A minha vida acaba e desfaz-se como a tenda dum pastor,

como a obra dum tecelão quando chega ao fim.

De um dia para o outro, a minha vida está a ser consumida.

13 Passei toda a noite a gemer;

era como se um leão me estivesse a partir os ossos.

De um dia para o outro, a minha vida está a ser consumida.

14 No meu delírio chilreava como um grou ou uma andorinha,

gemia como uma pomba.

Levantava os olhos para cima, pedindo ajuda.

Ó Senhor, gritava eu, estou angustiado! Socorre-me!"

15 Mas que tenho eu a dizer?

Porque foi ele próprio quem me mandou esta doença.

Todo o meu sono desapareceu,

por causa da amargura do meu coração.

16 Ó Senhor, a tua disciplina é boa, dá vida e saúde.

Cura-me e faz com que eu viva!

17 Agora já compreendo tudo!

Foi bom para mim passar por toda esta aflição,

porque me livraste carinhosamente da morte;

perdoaste todos os meus pecados.

18 Visto que os mortos não te podem louvar,

não podem ficar cheios de esperança e de alegria.

19 Os vivos, só os vivos, podem louvar-te

como eu estou a fazer agora.

A nossa geração dará a conhecer à seguinte a tua fidelidade.

20 O Senhor veio salvar-me!

Todos os dias da minha vida, de agora em diante,

cantarei hinos de louvor no templo,

acompanhado de instrumentos musicais.

21 Isaías tinha dito aos criados de Ezequias: "Façam uma pomada de figos e ponham-na sobre a chaga e ele sarará."

22 Ezequias, nessa altura, até tinha perguntado: "Que sinal me dará o Senhor como prova de que estarei com condições para ir ao templo?"

1 In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. 4 Then came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying, 5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years. 6 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city. 7 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken; 8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward.
