1 Cheguem-se e ouçam, nações da Terra! Que o mundo, e tudo o que nele existe, ouça as minhas palavras! 2 O Senhor está extremamente indignado contra os povos. A sua ira dirige-se especialmente contra os seus exércitos. Por isso, os destruirá completamente e os entregará à matança. 3 Os seus mortos serão deixados até sem serem enterrados; o mau cheiro dos corpos a apodrecer encherá a terra e dos montes escorrerá o seu sangue. 4 Por esse tempo, os céus em cima como que se derreterão e desaparecerão; serão como um rolo que se enrola. As estrelas cairão como folhas secas da videira e da figueira.

5 "Quando a minha espada tiver acabado o seu trabalho nos céus, então deem atenção, porque será a altura de cair sobre Edom, o povo que eu amaldiçoei."

6 A espada do Senhor está cheia de sangue; ela está coberta de gordura, e do sangue dos cordeiros e dos bodes, e também da gordura das entranhas dos carneiros. Porque, na verdade, o Senhor executará um enorme sacrifício em Edom, fará uma tremenda matança na cidade de Bozra. 7 Até os melhores dos mais fortes morrerão, além dos jovens e dos veteranos. A terra ficará embriagada de sangue e o solo ficará mais rico, por causa de toda aquela gordura. 8 Porque chegou, enfim, o dia da vingança, o ano da recompensa por tudo aquilo que Edom fez a Sião. 9 Os ribeiros de Edom se encherão de alcatrão, a terra cobrir-se-á de fogo. 10 A aplicação desta pena sobre Edom nunca mais terminará; aquele fumo subirá para sempre. A terra permanecerá deserta por todas as gerações; ninguém nunca mais ali viverá; 11 só corujas do deserto e porcos-espinhos, corujões-orelhudos e corvos. Deus fará um juízo sobre esta terra e chegará à conclusão que é digna de ser destruída. Julgará os seus responsáveis e verá que são dignos de morte. 12 Será chamada terra de ninguém e todos os seus príncipes terão desaparecido num instante. 13 Nas suas fortalezas passarão a crescer só espinhos; ortigas e cardos é o que haverá nas fortificações; tornar-se-á a habitação de chacais, o poiso de corujas do deserto. 14 Os animais selvagens dos desertos ali se misturarão com lobos e hienas e os seus gritos encherão as noites. Animais noturnos chamar-se-ão lugubremente uns aos outros e até os demónios ali irão para descansar. 15 As corujas porão naquele lugar os seus ovos, terão crias e delas cuidarão. Também os milhafres virão aos pares para ali acasalarem.

16 Procurem no livro do Senhor e vejam tudo quanto irá fazer; nem um só detalhe falhará, nem um só milhafre estará ali sem o seu macho. Porque foi o Senhor quem o disse e o seu Espírito faz com que tudo venha a verificar-se. 17 Porque ele próprio inspecionou a terra, repartiu-a e deixou-a em legado a essas sinistras criaturas, as quais a ocuparão para sempre, por todas as gerações.

1 Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people: let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it.*34.1 all that…: Heb. the fulness thereof 2 For the indignation of the LORD is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies: he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter. 3 Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcases, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. 4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. 5 For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. 6 The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made fat with fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of Idumea. 7 And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness.*34.7 unicorns: or, rhinocerots*34.7 soaked: or, drunken 8 For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

9 And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. 10 It shall not be quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.

11 But the cormorant and the bittern shall possess it; the owl also and the raven shall dwell in it: and he shall stretch out upon it the line of confusion, and the stones of emptiness.*34.11 cormorant: or, pelican 12 They shall call the nobles thereof to the kingdom, but none shall be there, and all her princes shall be nothing. 13 And thorns shall come up in her palaces, nettles and brambles in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be an habitation of dragons, and a court for owls.*34.13 owls: or, ostriches: Heb. daughters of the owl 14 The wild beasts of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts of the island, and the satyr shall cry to his fellow; the screech owl also shall rest there, and find for herself a place of rest.*34.14 The wild beasts of the desert: Heb. 16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them. 17 And he hath cast the lot for them, and his hand hath divided it unto them by line: they shall possess it for ever, from generation to generation shall they dwell therein.
