Quarto Livro

(Salmos 90–106)

Oração de Moisés, o homem de Deus.

1 Senhor, tu tens sido o nosso refúgio,

através dos tempos.

2 Antes de formares as montanhas,

antes mesmo de criares a Terra e todo o universo,

sim, desde a eternidade tu és Deus.

3 Tu falas e fazes voltar a criatura humana

ao pó de onde veio.

4 Mil anos são para ti apenas como o dia de ontem que se foi

ou como uma simples hora que passa, durante a noite.

5 Nós passamos, no tempo, tão rapidamente

como uma corrente de água.

A vida passa como o sono,

como a relva que floresce de madrugada.

6 Somos como a relva que, de manhã, é verde;

depois, sendo cortada, murcha antes que caia a noite.

7 Se a tua severidade se acende, somos consumidos;

se cairmos na alçada da tua condenação,

o teu castigo nos esmagará.

8 A nossa maldade está exposta diante de ti;

o nosso pecado oculto é revelado sob a luz da tua face.

9 Não é de admirar que os nossos dias se tornem

longos e pesados sob a tua indignação;

os nossos anos vão-se como um suspiro.

10 A duração da nossa vida é setenta anos;

se alguns, pela sua robustez, chegam aos oitenta,

o que a vida lhes dá é só cansaço e aborrecimento;

o tempo passa tão rápido que temos a sensação de voarmos.

11 Quem é capaz de avaliar a força da tua ira?

Quem não teme a violência do teu desagrado?

12 Ensina-nos a contar os nossos dias,

para que os nossos corações se encham de sabedoria.

13 Volta-te para nós, Senhor!

Até quando teremos de esperar?

Sê benigno para connosco os que te servimos.

14 Pela manhã, satisfaz-nos com a tua bondade

e teremos alegria até ao fim das nossas vidas.

15 Dá-nos a felicidade por tanto tempo

quanto aquele em que fomos afligidos

e em que passámos por dias muito difíceis.

16 Que possamos de novo ver as tuas maravilhas!

Que os nossos filhos se familiarizem com a tua glória

no meio do povo que te serve!

17 Que o favor do Senhor nosso Deus seja sobre nós!

Consolida tu próprio o trabalho que fazemos!

Sim, confirma aquilo que fazem as nossas mãos!

A Prayer of Moses the man of God.

2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.

3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.*90.4 when…: or, when he hath passed them

5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up.*90.5 groweth…: or, is changed

6 In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.

7 For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath are we troubled.

8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.

12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.*90.12 apply: Heb. cause to come

13 Return, O LORD, how long? and let it repent thee concerning thy servants.

14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us, and the years wherein we have seen evil.

16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children.

17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.
