1 Apresentaram-se então no banquete de Ester o rei e Hamã juntos. De novo o monarca, chegando o momento de servir os vinhos, lhe perguntou: O que é que pretendes, rainha Ester? Qual é o desejo que queres apresentar? Seja o que for te darei, até metade do reino!

3 A rainha disse então: Se realmente eu ganhei, ó rei, as tuas boas graças, e se bem te parecer, peço que salves a minha vida e a do meu povo. Porque tanto eu como o meu povo fomos vendidos a quem nos quer destruir. Estamos condenados a ser liquidados, assassinados. Se ao menos fôssemos vendidos como escravos e escravas, talvez me calasse, visto que com isso o prejuízo causado ao rei não seria de enorme monta.

5 Mas de que é que estás tu a falar? Quem é que pretende atentar contra a tua vida?

6 É este mau Hamã que aqui está, que é nosso inimigo, respondeu Ester. Hamã empalideceu de terror perante os dois.

7 O monarca levantou-se de um salto e retirou-se para o jardim do palácio amã entretanto tentou livrar a sua vida junto de Ester, implorando-lhe que o salvasse, pois sabia que estava perdido.

8 Hamã lançou-se de joelhos junto ao leito em que a rainha se reclinava, e eis que nesse momento regressa o rei vindo dos jardins do palácio. O quê? será que ainda por cima ele queria abusar da rainha debaixo do meu tecto?, rugiu o monarca. E logo mandou que o condenassem à morte. Os ajudantes do rei apressaram-se a pôr-lhe sobre o rosto o véu de condenado.

9 Harbona, um dos eunucos do palácio lembrou: Majestade, Hamã acabava de mandar erguer uma forca de vinte e cinco metros para fazer enforcar Mardoqueu, o homem que salvou a vossa vida! Essa forca ainda lá está junto à casa dele.Enforquem-no aí, ordenou o soberano.

10 Assim fizeram, e a ira do rei apaziguou-se.

1 So the king and Haman came in, to banquet with Esther the queen.

2 Then said the king unto Esther, on the second day also, during the banquet of wine, What is thy petition, Queen Esther, that it may be granted thee? and what is thy requestunto the half of the kingdomthat it may be performed?

3 Then answered Esther the queen, and said, If I have found favour in thine eyes, O king, and if, unto the king, it seem good, let my life be granted me, as my petition, and my people, as my request;

4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain and to be caused to perish. If indeed, for bondmen and for bondwomen, we had been sold, I had held my peace, although the adversary could not have made good the damage to the king.

5 Then spake King Ahasuerus, and said unto Esther the queen,Who is he now, and where is he, whose heart is set to act thus?

6 And Esther said, A man who is an adversary and enemy, this wicked Haman. And, Haman, was terrified, before the king and the queen.

7 Now, the king, arising in his wrath from the banquet of wine, and going into the palace garden, Haman, stood to make request for his life from Esther the queen, for he saw that ruin, was determined against him, by the king.

8 When, the king, returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine, Haman, was lying prostrate upon the couch whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he, even dare to force the queen, while I am in the house? No sooner had the word gone forth out of the mouth of the king, than, the face of Haman, they had covered.

9 Then said Harbonahone of the eunuchs before the kingYea lo! the gallows that Haman made ready for Mordecai, who had spoken well for the king, is standing in Hamans house, of a height of fifty cubits. Then said the king, Hang him thereon.

10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai,and, the wrath of the king, was appeased.
