1 O novo rei de Judá foi Ezequias. O seu pai era o rei Acaz. O seu reinado durou 29 anos, com capital em Jerusalém. A sua idade, ao iniciar as suas responsabilidades reais: 25 anos. A sua mãe chamava-se Abi; era filha de Zacarias. Em Israel: o rei Oseias, filho de Ela, era rei havia 3 anos.3 Ezequias fez o que era recto aos olhos do Senhor, conforme tudo o que fizera David, seu antepassado. Tirou os nichos das colinas, derrubou os obeliscos, quebrou os vergonhosos ídolos de Asera, destruiu a serpente de bronze que Moisés fizera, pois que o povo até então lhe oferecia incenso queimado, chamando-lhe Neustan; ainda que o rei Ezequias lhes tivesse dito que não passava de uma simples peça de bronze . Confiou fortemente no Senhor Deus de Israel. Com efeito não houve nem antes nem depois dele nenhum rei tão fiel ao Senhor como ele; seguiu os seus caminhos e obedeceu aos mandamentos dados através de Moisés. Por isso o Senhor o ajudou e o fez prosperar em tudo. Rebelou-se contra o rei da Assíria e recusou continuar a pagar-lhe tributos. Conquistou terra aos filisteus até ao limite de Gaza e seus arredores, destruindo povoações, tanto as maiores como as mais pequenas .9 Foi durante o quarto ano do seu reinado, que correspondia ao sétimo do reinado de Oseias de Israel, que o rei Salmaneser da Assíria atacou Israel e pôs cerco à cidade de Samaria. Três anos mais tarde - durante o sexto ano do reinado de Ezequias e o nono do rei Oseias de Israel - Samaria cedeu e foi conquistada. O rei da Assíria transportou israelitas para o seu país, e organizou colónias para a instalação deles na cidade de Halate e ao longo das margens do rio Habor, em Gozã, assim como nas cidades dos medos. Isso aconteceu-lhes porque não quiseram dar ouvidos à palavra do Senhor seu Deus e aceitar tudo o que ele queria que fizessem. Ao contrário, quebraram a aliança estabelecida com Deus, desobedeceram aos mandamentos que Moisés, o servo do Senhor, lhes tinha dado.13 Mais tarde, durante o décimo ano do reinado de Ezequias, Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, sitiou e capturou todas as cidades fortificadas de Judá. O rei Ezequias pediu a paz e enviou uma mensagem ao rei da Assíria em Laquis: Errei. Estou pronto a pagar o tributo que exigires, contanto que te retires da terra. O rei assírio pediu então um pagamento de dez mil quilos de prata e mil de ouro. Para juntar todo esse dinheiro, o rei Ezequias serviu-se de prata armazenada no templo e nos cofres do palácio real. Arrancou ainda o ouro que revestia as portas do templo, e o das ombreiras de outras portas que tinham sido revestidas com esse metal precioso, e deu tudo ao rei assírio.17 Contudo este último mandou o chefe do seu exército, mais o tesoureiro real e o mordomo da corte em Laquis, com um grande exército; acamparam junto à estrada principal, ao lado do campo das lavadeiras, perto do aqueduto do tanque superior. Pediram que o rei Ezequias viesse falar com eles. O soberano contudo mandou uma delegação de paz, com estes homens: Eliaquim (filho de Hilquias), o mordomo-mor; Sebna, secretário real; e Joá (filho de Asafe), cronista da corte.19 Então o general assírio enviou o seguinte recado ao rei Ezequias: Diz assim o grande rei da Assíria: 'Ninguém pode escapar ao meu poder! Tu, para te rebelares contra mim, hás-de precisar de mais do que simples promessas por parte dos teus aliados. Mas qual deles está em condições de te poder dar outra coisa para além de palavras?21 O Egipto? Se te apoias no Egipto, vais verificar que essa nação é como um pau que logo se quebra quando nos apoiamos nele, e que acaba por nos perfurar a mão. O Faraó egípcio não inspira confiança alguma!' Mas se disseres também: 'Confiamos no Senhor que nos salvará26 Então Eliaquim, Sebna e Joá responderam-lhes: Pedimos-te que fales em aramaico, porque compreendemo-lo. Não uses o hebraico, para que o povo que está sobre as muralhas não perceba.27 O general assírio retorquiu: O meu senhor não me mandou apenas para vos falar a vocês, mas também a essa gente que está em cima da muralha. É que eles estão também condenados a ingerirem o seu próprio esterco e a sua urina!28 E logo a seguir o embaixador levantou a voz dirigindo-se, em hebraico, ao povo que ali estava:29 Ouçam o que vos diz o grande rei da Assíria! 'Não se deixem enganar pelo rei Ezequias. Ele nunca será capaz de vos livrar do meu poder.30 Não permitam que ele vos engane, levando-vos a confiar no Senhor para vos livrar.31 Não dêem ouvidos ao rei Ezequias. Rendam-se! E poderão viver em paz aqui mesmo, na vossa própria terra, até que vos leve para outra semelhante a esta, cheia de belas searas, fértil, com muitas vinhas, olivais e mel. Tudo isto em troca da morte! Não escutem Ezequias quando ele tentar persuadir-vos em como o Senhor vos salvará.33 Algum dos deuses das outras nações conseguiu livrar o seu povo do rei da Assíria? Que foi que aconteceu com os deuses de Hamate, Arpade, Sefarvaim, Hena e Iva? Foram eles capazes de proteger Samaria?35 Qual foi o deus que, em alguma ocasião, teve poder para preservar uma nação da minha força? Então, o que é que vos leva a pensar que o Senhor pode salvar Jerusalém?'36 No entanto a gente que estava sobre as muralhas manteve-se em silêncio, porque o rei tinha-lhes dado instruções para que nada respondessem. Eliaquim (filho de Hilquias), mordomo-mor, Sebna, secretário real e Joá (filho de Asafe), o cronista da corte, regressaram junto do rei Ezequias, com as suas vestimentas rasgadas, e transmitiram-lhe o que o general assírio lhes dissera.

1 Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.4 He removed the high places, and broke the images, and cut down the groves, and broke in pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made: for till those days the children of Israel burnt incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.6 For he cleaved to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.7 And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.8 He smote the Philistines, even to Gaza, and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.9 And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.10 And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.11 And the king of Assyria carried away Israel to Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.13 Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me I will bear. And the king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house.16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.17 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rab-saris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army against Jerusalem: and they went up, and came to Jerusalem: and when they had come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.18 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.19 And Rab-shakeh said to them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which thou trustest?20 Thou sayest, but they are but vain words, I have counsel and strength for the war. Now in whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?21 Now behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man leaneth, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust on him.22 But if ye say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?23 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou shalt be able on thy part to set riders upon them.24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?25 Have I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.26 Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah, to Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.27 But Rab-shakeh said to them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall, that they may feed on their vilest excretions with you?28 Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews language, and spoke, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:29 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.31 Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig-tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive-oil and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not to Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?34 Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?35 Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?36 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.
