1 No segundo ano do reinado de Dario I, no dia de Agosto , a palavra do Senhor veio através do profeta Ageu a Zorobabel (filho de Sealtiel), governador de Judá, e também a Josué (filho de Jeozadaque), sumo sacerdote .2 O Senhor todo-poderoso diz: O povo está a dizer: Esta não é a melhor altura para reconstruir o templo.3 Por isso o Senhor mandou esta mensagem através do profeta Ageu:4 Será no entanto esta a melhor altura para vocês se porem a viver como vivem, em vivendas luxuosas, deixando o templo continuar em ruínas? E afinal que ganham com isso?5 Reflictam cuidadosamente no vosso comportamento: O que acontece é afinal que semeiam muito para colher pouco. Comem, mas não se fartam; bebem, mas não se saciam. A roupa que vestem não chega para vos aquecer. O vosso salário desaparece como se fosse metido em bolsos sem fundo!7 Pensem bem na vossa conduta, diz o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais. Pensem em como agiram e o que resultou disso!8 Subam às montanhas e tragam madeira para reconstruir o templo, e agradar-me-ei dele, fazendo nele aparecer a minha glória - diz o Senhor.9 Esperam obter muito mas alcançam muito pouco; e mesmo esse pouco, quando o trazem para casa, eu faço desaparecer pelo meu sopro. Tudo isso porquê? Porque o meu templo permanece em ruínas e vocês não lhe ligam. A vossa única preocupação são as vossas belas vivendas.10 Por isso reterei as chuvas dos céus, e a terra vos dará pobres frutos11 Com efeito, fiz vir a seca sobre a terra, e até sobre as montanhas, uma seca que fará mirrar o trigo, as uvas, o azeite - tudo o que a terra produz - uma seca que vos matará à fome, vocês e os animais, que arruinará tudo o que vocês tanto se esforçaram para obter.12 Então Zorobabel (filho de Sealtiel), governador de Judá, mais Josué (filho de Jeozadaque), sumo sacerdote, e ainda o resto do povo que ficou na terra obedeceu à mensagem de Ageu, vinda da parte do Senhor seu Deus; e começaram a adorá-lo zelosamente.13 O Senhor disse-lhes pois, através de nova comunicação por meio do seu mensageiro Ageu - Estou convosco, abençoar-vos-ei14 O Senhor suscitou em Zorobabel, governador de Judá, em Josué, sumo sacerdote, e no resto de todo o povo o forte desejo de reconstruir o templo. Dessa forma reuniram-se no dia 21 de Setembro do segundo ano de reinado de Dario, e ofereceram voluntariamente o seu trabalho.

1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built.3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste?5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe yourselves, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.9 Ye looked for much, and lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that is waste, and ye run every man to his own house.10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.11 And I called for a drouth upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands.12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD.13 Then spoke Haggai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message to the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD.14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and performed work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,15 In the four and twentieth day of the same month, in the second year of Darius the king.
