1 Tiago, ao serviço de Deus e do Senhor Jesus Cristo, saúda todo o povo de Deus disperso por todo o mundo.2 Meus irmãos, considerem-se felizes quando tiverem de passar por provações.3 Porque se a vossa fé for posta à prova, tornar-se-á mais perseverante4 Que ela resista pois até ao fim, e assim a vossa formação se completará, com uma conduta íntegra, e serão maduros espiritualmente.5 E se alguém tem falta da sabedoria necessária, peça-a a Deus, que está sempre pronto a dar generosamente sem a menor censura, e lhe será dada6 Mas que esse pedido a Deus seja feito com fé, na certeza da resposta. Porque quem se dirige a Deus com dúvidas é semelhante às ondas do mar, levadas pelos ventos, lançadas de uma para outra parte.7 Uma pessoa assim é indecisa, instável, torna-se inconstante em todos os seus actos. Não pense, por isso, que receberá alguma coisa do Senhor.9 Quanto aos crentes de condição social mais humilde, sintam-se contentes porque Deus os tem exaltado.10 E, por outro lado, que o rico se sinta animado quando o Senhor o reduz à sua justa condição humana. Pois ele passará como a flor do campo:11 quando o Sol aquece com força, ela seca, cai, desaparece a sua beleza. Assim é com os ricos no seu luxo.12 Feliz aquele que resiste à prova, porque depois receberá a coroa da vida, que o Senhor promete aos que o amam.13 Que ninguém, em presença da tentação, diga que é Deus quem o está a tentar. Porque Deus não está sujeito à acção do mal, e por isso também nunca poderia tentar ninguém a praticá-lo.14 O que acontece é que, quando uma pessoa é tentada, são os seus próprios desejos maus que a seduzem.15 Depois, essa maldade, se lhe cedemos, dá nascimento ao pecado; e este, por sua vez, provoca a morte.16 Portanto, não se deixem enganar, queridos irmãos.17 É de Deus que nos vem tudo o que possa haver de bom e de perfeito, ele que é o Criador de toda a luz. Nele não há sombra, nem mudança.18 E foi num acto de sua vontade que ele nos fez renascer, por meio da palavra da verdade, e nos tornámos os primeiros frutos da sua nova criação.19 Saibam isto, irmãos: é melhor ouvir muito e falar pouco. E também ser lento em se irritar.20 Porque não é com zanga que se cumpre a justiça de Deus.21 Por isso, desembaracem-se de tudo o que é sujo e mau, e recebam com um espírito dócil a palavra que foi semeada nos vossos corações e que pode salvar as vossas almas.22 A questão é que cumpram efectivamente o que essa palavra vos diz, e que não se limitem a ouvir. Porque, se não, correm o risco de se iludirem.23 Porque quem se contenta com ouvir a palavra de Deus, e não procura pô-la em acção, é como alguém que se observa a um espelho e24 logo se afasta, esquecendo-se de como estava.25 Aquele, porém, que presta uma atenção cuidadosa à lei perfeita de Deus, que nos torna livres, não sendo ouvinte que facilmente esquece, mas que cumpre o que ela lhe diz, esse tal terá a bênção de Deus em tudo.26 Se alguém diz ser religioso e afinal não é capaz de travar a sua língua, engana-se a si mesmo; a sua religião não vale nada.27 Mas a verdadeira religião, aos olhos de Deus, pura e sem falhas, consiste em amparar os órfãos e as viúvas nas suas tribulações. Consiste também em não se deixar influenciar pela corrupção do mundo.

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.5 If any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given to him.6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing from the Lord.8 A man unsettled in his opinions is unstable in all his ways.9 Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:10 But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.11 For the sun hath no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and its flower falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed.15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.18 Of his own will he hath begotten us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the ingrafted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.23 For if any is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth away, and immediately forgetteth what manner of man he was.25 But he who looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth in it, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.26 If any man among you seemeth to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
