1 Meus irmãos, não se armem em sabichões. Não se esqueçam que quem ensina será sujeita a um julgamento mais rigoroso de Deus.2 Todos nós cometemos erros. Quem puder dominar perfeitamente o seu falar poderá considerar-se perfeito e capaz de controlar todo o seu ser3 Podemos dominar um possante cavalo por meio dum pequeno freio na sua boca.4 E um pequeno leme faz um grande navio virar para onde o piloto quiser, mesmo quando há forte vento.5 O mesmo se passa com a língua. Um membro bem pequeno, mas que pode gabar-se de grandes coisas! Uma floresta inteira pode ser incendiada por uma simples faísca.6 Pois também a língua é como um fogo. Ela é mesmo um mundo de maldade, e é capaz de contaminar todo o nosso ser. Alimentada com o fogo do inferno, é capaz de inflamar a nossa existência.7 Toda a espécie de animais se podem subjugar, animais ferozes, répteis, aves e até peixes. Todos se podem domar8 Mas ninguém consegue dominar a sua língua. É um mal que não se pode sujeitar, ela está sempre pronta a expelir veneno mortal.9 Com ela damos louvores ao Senhor nosso Pai, e outras vezes dizemos as piores coisas contra os homens, que são feitos à semelhança de Deus.;o se esqueçam de que o grande Juiz está à porta.10 Tomem como exemplos de resistência e de coragem os profetas, aqueles que vos falaram em nome do Senhor.11 Sempre temos considerado feliz quem resiste perante as provações. Ouviram da paciência de Job e viram o que, no fim, o Senhor lhe deu. Porque o Senhor é cheio de bondade e de misericórdia.12 Mas sobretudo nunca façam juras, meus irmãos, nem pelo céu, nem pela Terra, ou por outra coisa qualquer. Mas quando tiverem que dizer sim, digam simplesmente sim, e quando for não, digam não, para que não venham a ser condenados.13 Se alguém no vosso meio estiver aflito, que ore a Deus. Quem estiver contente, que louve a Deus.14 Se alguém estiver doente, que chame os pastores da igreja, os quais orarão por ele, e derramarão sobre ele azeite, em nome do Senhor.15 A oração feita com fé curará o doente; e o Senhor o levantará; se ele tiver cometido pecados, ser-lhe-ão perdoados.16 Confessem as vossas faltas uns aos outros, e também orem uns pelos outros; assim serão curados. A oração feita por um justo alcançará resultados muito grandes.17 Elias, por exemplo, era um homem com a mesma natureza que nós, e orando pediu com fervor que não chovesse, e durante três anos e meio não choveu sobre a terra.18 Depois, tornou a orar, e o céu deu chuva e a terra voltou a produzir os seus frutos.19 Se algum de vocês se tiver desviado da verdade, e outro o ajudar a voltar, irmãos,20 lembrem-se disto: aquele que ajuda qualquer pecador a deixar o seu erro salvará essa alma da morte e contribuirá para o perdão de muitos pecados.

1 My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.2 For in many things we all offend. If any man offendeth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.3 Behold, we put bits in the mouths of horses, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.4 Behold also the ships, which though they are so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small helm, withersoever the governor willeth.5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell.7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of animals in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.9 With this we bless God, even the Father; and with this we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God.10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?12 Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear olive-berries? or a vine, figs? so no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show by a good deportment his works with meekness of wisdom.14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demoniacal.16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.
