1 Meus irmãos, a fé em nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Senhor da glória, é incompatível com atitudes de parcialidade em relação às pessoas.2 Se, no vosso local de reunião, entrar uma pessoa muito bem vestida e com jóias nos dedos, e ao mesmo tempo chegar alguém que é pobre e mal vestido;(3 se, considerando a aparência vistosa do primeiro, lhe derem preferência, dizendo-lhe para se sentar no lugar de mais destaque; e se disserem ao pobre para ficar mesmo de pé, ou num canto da sala - não estão vocês assim a estabelecer diferençasÿ4 e a fazer juízos determinados por pensamentos condenáveis?5 Ouçam, queridos irmãos: Deus tem escolhido gente pobre nesta Terra para serem ricos na fé, garantindo-lhes a entrada no domínio do céu, que Deus prometeu aos que o amam.6 Mas daquela maneira desonraram o pobre. E não são geralmente os ricos que vos oprimem, e que vos arrastam aos tribunais? a7 Não são eles também que desprezam o honroso nome de Cristo, que marca as vossas vidas de cristãos?8 Se cumprirem com a mais importante lei de Deus, contida na sua palavra, que é: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo , então fazem bem.9 Mas, ao fazer diferenças entre as pessoas, estão a pecar; tornam-se assim culpados de transgredir essa lei de Deus.10 E o facto é que se alguém pretende cumprir cada mandamento da lei, e depois vier a tropeçar, desobedecendo a um só desses mandamentos, torna-se culpado em relação a toda a lei.11 Porque o mesmo Deus que disse: Não cometerás adultério , também disse: Não matarás . Portanto, se realmente não cometeres adultério, mas se matares, és culpado perante a lei.12 Que as vossas palavras e os vossos actos sejam os de quem será julgado pela lei da liberdade.-13 E esse julgamento será exercido sem compaixão sobre quem não teve misericórdia. Mas quem mostrar benignidade não terá receio do julgamento.14 Meus irmãos, que interessa se alguém disser que tem fé em Deus, e não fizer prova disso através de obras? Esse tipo de fé não salva ninguém.15 Se um irmão ou irmã sofrer por falta de vestuário, ou por passar fome,16 e se vocês lhe disserem: Procure mas é viver pacificamente, e vá-se aquecendo e comendo como puder, e se não lhe derem aquilo de que ele precisa para viver, uma tal resposta fará algum bem?17 Assim também a fé cristã, se não se traduzir em actos, é morta em si mesma.18 Poderá até dizer-se: Você tem a fé; mas eu tenho obras. Mostre-me então a sua fé sem obras. Porque eu dou-lhe a prova da minha fé, através das minhas boas obras!19 Você crê que há um só Deus? Está muito certo. Mas lembre-se que os demónios também crêem o mesmo, e tremem. Você é uma pessoa bem insensata se não conseguir compreender que a fé sem actos de nada vale.21 Não mostrou o nosso pai Abraão que era justo através dos seus actos, ao oferecer a Deus o seu filho, Isaque, sobre um altar? ÿ22 Como vê, na sua vida a fé e as obras actuaram conjuntamente. A fé completou-se através dos actos.23 Foi por isso que as Escrituras dizem: Abraão creu em Deus, e o Senhor o declarou justo. E foi chamado o amigo de Deus. ,24 Estão a ver então que uma pessoa é considerada justa aos olhos de Deus pelo que faz, e não só por crer.25 Outro exemplo disso é Raabe, aquela mulher de má conduta. Ela foi salva por aquilo que fez, pois não teve medo de esconder os espias e ajudou-os a escaparem-se por outro caminho26 Tal como o corpo está morto se não há espírito nele, assim também a fé sem obras está morta.

1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.2 For if there come into your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say to him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment-seats?7 Do they not blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?8 If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery; said also, Do not kill. Now if thou committest no adultery, yet if thou killest, thou art become a transgressor of the law.12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.13 For he shall have judgment without mercy that hath shown no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man sayeth he hath faith, and hath not works? can faith save him?15 If a brother or sister is naked, and destitute of daily food,16 And one of you sayeth to them, Depart in peace, be you warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.18 Also a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the demons also believe, and tremble.20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?23 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.24 Ye see then that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
