1 Isto é o que o Senhor Deus me mostrou numa visão: Estava a preparar uma vasta praga de gafanhotos para destruir as principais searas, que cresceram depois da primeira ceifa, e que tinham sido entregues como imposto devido ao rei.2 Tudo comeram, completamente. Então disse: Ó Senhor Deus, perdoa ao teu povo! Se te voltares contra Israel, que mais esperança poderá haver? Israel é tão pequeno!3 Então o Senhor reteve-se e não deu cumprimento à visão. Não o farei, disse-me.4 Depois o Senhor mostrou-me um grande fogo que preparara para os castigar, o qual secava até as águas e queimava a terra inteira.5 Disse eu então: Ó Senhor Deus, não faças tal coisa. Se te voltares contra eles, que outra esperança poderão ter? Israel não tem força nenhuma!6 O Senhor desistiu também deste plano: Também não farei isso.7 Então fez-me ver o seguinte: O Senhor estava em pé junto de um muro, com um fio de prumo, verificando se estava perfeitamente direito.8 E perguntou-me: Amós, que vês tu? Um prumo.Hei-de testar o meu povo com um prumo. E desta vez não hei-de desistir do meu castigo.9 Os altares dos ídolos onde os descendentes de Isaque adoraram, assim como os santuários em Israel, hão-de ser destruídos; destruirei igualmente a dinastia do rei Jeroboão, por meio da guerra.10 Mas quando Amazias, o sacerdote de Betel, ouviu o que Amós estava a dizer, mandou com urgência uma mensagem a Jeroboão, o rei: Amós é um traidor da nossa nação; está a conspirar a tua morte. Isto é intolerável. Fará suscitar a revolta em toda a terra.11 Ele diz que tu serás morto e que Israel será levado em cativeiro para o exílio e para a escravidão.12 Amazias deu ordem a Amós: Sai daqui para fora, tu, ó vidente! Vai lá para a terra de Judá fazer as tuas profecias!13 Não nos incomodes mais aqui com as tuas visões, aqui nesta capital, onde está o templo do rei!14 Mas Amós respondeu-lhe: Eu não sou realmente um profeta. Não pertenço à família dos profetas. Sou apenas um pastor e trabalhador do campo.15 Contudo o Senhor tirou-me de andar atrás dos rebanhos e disse-me: 'Vai, e profetiza ao meu povo de Israel.'16 Por isso ouve esta mensagem do Senhor para ti. Tu dizes, 'Não profetizes contra Israel'. Mas o Senhor replica-te:17 'Visto teres interferido contra a palavra do Senhor a tua mulher se prostituirá nesta mesma cidade, os teus filhos e filhas serão mortos e a terra toda dividida. Tu próprio acabarás por morrer numa terra pagã; o povo de Israel tornar-se-á escravo, no exílio, lá muito longe daqui.'

1 Thus hath the Lord GOD shown to me; and behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.2 And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.3 The LORD repented for this: It shall not be, saith the LORD.4 Thus hath the Lord GOD shown to me: and behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.5 Then said I, O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech thee: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small.6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.7 Thus he showed me: and behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumb-line, with a plumb-line in his hand.8 And the LORD said to me, Amos, what seest thou? and I said, A plumb-line. Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumb-line in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:9 And the high places of Isaac shall be desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.10 Then Amaziah the priest of Beth-el sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, Amos hath conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.11 For thus Amos saith, Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.12 Also Amaziah said to Amos, O thou seer, go flee thee away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:13 But prophesy not again any more at Beth-el: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court.14 Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit:15 And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.16 Now therefore hear thou the word of the LORD: Thou sayest, Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not thy word against the house of Isaac.17 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Thy wife shall be a harlot in the city, and thy sons and thy daughters shall fall by the sword, and thy land shall be divided by line; and thou shalt die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go from his land into captivity.
