1 Com efeito Boaz foi até à praça junto às portas da cidade e lá encontrou o tal parente que mencionara. Olha, chega-te aqui, chamou-o ele. Quero falar-te num assunto. E sentaram-se os dois. Boaz entretanto chamou dez dos anciãos responsáveis da cidade, pedindo-lhes para ali se sentarem também como testemunhas.3 Boaz disse ao seu parente: Como sabes bem Noemi regressou de Moabe para a nossa terra. Ela pretende vender a propriedade do nosso familiar Elimeleque. Achei por bem falar-te acerca disto, para que possas ser tu a comprá-la, no caso de assim pretenderes, na presença destas testemunhas. Se a quiseres, diz-mo já, pois se não, quero eu. No entanto cabe-te a ti primeiramente o direito de a comprar, e logo a seguir sou eu.Pois, sim, compro-a, disse o outro.5 Mas repara que o facto de a comprares, acrescentou Boaz, implica que cases com Rute, para que possa ter filhos que dêem continuidade ao nome da família do marido e venham a herdar a terra.6 Sendo assim já não posso fazê-lo, replicou o homem. Pois um filho dela viria a ser também herdeiro da minha propriedade. Compra-a tu, então.7 Naqueles dias era costume em Israel, quando um homem transferia para outro um seu direito de compra, descalçar o sapato e entregá-lo à outra parte; isto como que validava publicamente a transferência. Por isso, quando o outro disse a Boaz para ser ele a comprar a propriedade, descalçou o sapato e deu-lho.9 Boaz disse para as testemunhas e para a gente que se tinha juntado em volta: Estão todos a ver que hoje comprei a propriedade de Elimeleque, e também de Quiliom e de Malom, a Noemi, e que, em consequência dessa transação, fico com Rute a moabita, viúva de Malom, como minha mulher, para que ela possa ter um filho que continue o nome da família do seu defunto marido.11 Todas as pessoas em redor, assim como as testemunhas, responderam: Somos testemunhas. Que o Senhor torne essa mulher que agora entra no teu lar tão fertil como Raquel e como Leia, de quem toda a nação de Israel descende! Que possas ser um homem próspero e prestigiado em Belém, que os descendentes que o Senhor te der, por essa jovem mulher, possam ser tão numerosos e tão dignos como o foram os do nosso antepassado Perez, filho de Tamar e de Judá.13 E assim Boaz casou com Rute. Ela concebeu e teve um filho. As mulheres da cidade disseram a Noemi: Bendito seja o Senhor que te deu este netinho; que ele possa vir a ser famoso em Israel. Que venha a dar-te novamente a juventude da alma e seja o teu apoio na velhice; pois é filho da tua nora que tanto te ama e que foi para ti mais afectuosa do que sete filhos!16 Noemi criou ela própria o menino, e as vizinhas diziam: Noemi é como se tivesse sido novamente mãe! E deram ao bebé o nome de Obede. Foi ele o pai de Jessé e o avô do rei David.18 É esta a sequência da árvore genealógica, começando com Perez: Perez, Hezrom, Rão, Aminadabe, Nassom, Salmom, Boaz, Obede, Jessé, David.

1 Then Boaz went up to the gate, and sat down there: and behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by; to whom he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down.2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down.3 And he said to the kinsman, Naomi, that has come again out of the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech's:4 And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it besides thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.5 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.6 And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it.7 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for confirming all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel.8 Therefore the kinsman said to Boaz, Buy it for thyself. So he drew off his shoe.9 And Boaz said to the elders, and to all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.11 And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that hath come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in Beth-lehem:12 And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in to her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son.14 And the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, who hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.15 And he shall be to thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thy old age: for thy daughter-in-law, who loveth thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him.16 And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became its nurse.17 And the women, her neighbors, gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.18 Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,19 And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,20 And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,21 And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,22 And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
