1 Houve um homem chamado Elcana, da tribo de Efraim, que vivia em Ramataim de Zofim, nos montes de Efraim. O nome de seu pai era Jeroão; o do seu avô Eliú; do bisavô Toú; e do tetravô Zufe.2 Tinha duas mulheres: Ana e Penina. Esta última tinha filhos, porém Ana não tinha nenhum.3 Cada ano Elcana ia com a sua família até ao tabernáculo em Silo para adorar o Senhor dos céus e sacrificar-lhe. (Nesse tempo os sacerdotes em funções eram os dois filhos de Eli - Hofni e Finéias.) No dia em que apresentava o seu sacrifício, Elcana assinalava o facto, dando presentes a Penina e aos seus filhos; mas ainda que amasse muito Ana, apenas lhe podia dar um só presente, porque o Senhor lhe tinha fechado a madre; por essa razão não recebia presentes que pudesse ela própria passar também aos seus filhos.6 As coisas complicavam-se ainda mais porque Penina provocava Ana e a humilhava pelo facto de ser estéril.7 Todos os anos era a mesma coisa - Penina troçando e rindo da outra, quando iam a Silo. Ana chorando muito e deixando de comer.8 O que é que se passa, Ana?, exclamava Elcana. Porque é que não comes? Porque é toda essa agitação por não teres filhos? Não sou eu para ti melhor do que dez filhos?9 Uma noite depois de jantar, quando foram a Silo, Ana dirigiu-se ao tabernáculo. Eli, o sacerdote, encontrava-se sentado no lugar habitual, ao lado da entrada. Ana encontrava-se profundamente angustiada e chorava amargamente enquanto orava ao Senhor. Fez então este voto. Ó Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, se te debruçares sobre a minha tristeza e responderes à minha oração, dando-me um filho, então eu to tornarei a dar; será teu por toda a sua vida e o cabelo nunca lhe será cortado.12 Eli reparou que ela mexia os lábios mas sem se lhe ouvir a voz, visto que orava em silêncio; pensou que estaria toldada pelo vinho e dirigiu-se-lhe:14 Então tu vens para aqui embriagada? Vai curar a tua bebedeira para outro sítio.15 Oh, não, meu senhor!, replicou ela. Eu não bebi! Encontro-me mas é muito triste e estava a abrir o coração ao Senhor. Peço-te que não penses de mim uma tal coisa, que eu estivesse embriagada!17 Nesse caso, olha, anima-te! Que o Senhor de Israel responda à tua oração, conforme o que lhe pediste!18 Fico-te muito grata. E regressou mais feliz, começando de novo a alimentar-se normalmente.19 Toda a família se levantou cedo na manhã seguinte, e foi ao tabernáculo adorar o Senhor mais uma vez, regressando depois a Ramá. Elcana e Ana foram deitar-se e o Senhor tomou em consideração o pedido dela. Ao cabo do tempo próprio nasceu-lhe um menino, a quem chamou Samuel , porque o pedi ao Senhor, disse ela.21 No ano seguinte, Elcana, Penina e os filhos foram, como todos os anos, ao tabernáculo mas sem Ana; esta dissera ao marido: Prefiro esperar até que o menino seja desmamado; depois então levá-lo-ei ao tabernáculo, para o deixar lá.23 Está bem. Faz como melhor te parecer, concordou Elcana. Faça-se a vontade do Senhor. Ela ficou pois em casa, até que o menino fosse desmamado.24 Então, ainda que muito pequenino, levaram-no ao tabernáculo em Silo. E tomaram consigo um touro de três anos, para o sacrifício, trinta e cinco litros de farinha e algum vinho.25 Depois do sacrifício, entregaram a criança a Eli.26 Senhor, disse Ana, eu sou aquela mulher que aqui esteve certa vez orando ao Senhor. Pedi-lhe que me desse um filho, e a minha petição foi ouvida. Venho agora oferecê-lo a Deus por toda a sua vida. Deixou-o pois desta forma no tabernáculo para o serviço do Senhor.

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite:2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3 And this man went up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:5 But to Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah; but the LORD had rendered her barren.6 And her adversary also provoked her greatly, to make her fret, because the LORD had made her barren.7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?9 So Hannah rose after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drank. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly.11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give to thy handmaid a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli observed her mouth.13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.14 And Eli said to her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drank neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.16 Count not thy handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.18 And she said, Let thy handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.19 And they rose in the morning early, and worshiped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time had arrived, after Hannah had conceived, that she bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.22 But Hannah went not up; for she said to her husband, I will not go up until the child is weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.23 And Elkanah her husband said to her, Do what seemeth to thee good; tarry until thou hast weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and nursed her son until she weaned him.24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.26 And she said, O my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying to the LORD.27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:28 Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshiped the LORD there.
