1 Samuel dirigiu-se de novo ao povo: Fiz portanto como pediram. Dei-vos um rei,2 que está agora à frente dos vossos destinos. Eu estou já velho e encanecido. Partirei, mas ficam os meus filhos convosco. Quanto a mim, estive ao serviço de todo o povo desde a minha meninice. Agora, diante do Senhor e daquele que ele ungiu como rei, digam-me a quem defraudei, ficando-lhe com algum boi ou jumento. Alguma vez vos enganei ou oprimi? Alguma vez me deixei aliciar com presentes? Digam-me pois, para que possa restituir qualquer dívida que tenha para convosco.4 Não, responderam-lhe, em nada nos defraudaste nem oprimiste. Nunca te deixaste vender com presentes de espécie alguma.5 Portanto o Senhor e o seu ungido rei são testemunhas de que nunca vos explorei, declarou Samuel.Sim, é verdade, responderam.6 Foi o Senhor quem escolheu Moisés e Arão, continuou Samuel, e que trouxe os vossos antepassados para fora do Egipto. Agora dêem atenção, e deixem que vos recorde, perante Deus, todas as boas coisas que ele vos fez, a vocês a aos vossos pais.8 Quando os israelitas ainda estavam no Egipto e clamaram ao Senhor, enviou-lhes Moisés e Arão para que os trouxesse a esta terra. Mas em breve se esqueceram do Senhor seu Deus, por isso permitiu que fossem vencidos por Sísera, o general do exército do rei Hazor, e pelos filisteus e ainda pelo rei de Moabe.10 Após isso clamaram de novo ao Senhor e confessaram que tinham pecado, desviando-se dele e adorando os ídolos de Baal e de Astarote. E garantiram, 'Só a ti adoraremos, somente a ti, se nos livrares dos nossos inimigos'. Ora o Senhor enviou Gedeão, Baraque, Jefta e Samuel para vos livrar, e ficaram a viver em segurança.12 Aconteceu também que, quando estavam com medo de Naás, o rei dos amonitas, vocês vieram ter comigo dizendo que queriam um rei que reinasse sobre vocês. No entanto o Senhor vosso Deus era já um rei para vocês; ele sempre foi o vosso rei. Pois bem, aqui está o rei que escolheram. Pediram-no, e o Senhor respondeu ao vosso requerimento.14 Portanto, se respeitarem e adorarem o Senhor e obedecerem aos seus mandamentos, sem se insurgirem contra Deus, e se, tanto vocês como o vosso rei, seguirem os caminhos do Senhor vosso Deus, tudo vos correrá bem. Caso contrário, se se revoltarem contra os mandamentos de Deus e recusarem acatá-los, a sua mão se tornará pesada sobre vocês, tal como o foi sobre os vossos antepassados.16 Quero que dêem agora bem atenção a uma intervenção milagrosa da parte do Senhor. Sabem bem que normalmente não chove nesta altura do ano, durante o tempo da ceifa. Mas vou orar ao Senhor, e ele mandará uma trovoada e chuva hoje, para que se dêem conta da extensão da vossa maldade, pedindo um rei!18 Samuel então clamou ao Senhor, que mandou trovões e chuva. O povo ficou muito temeroso do Senhor e de Samuel.19 Ora já ao Senhor por nós, se não vamos todos morrer!, gritaram a Samuel. Reconhecemos que acrescentámos aos nossos pecados ainda mais este, de ter pedido um rei para nós.20 Não estejam com medo, tranquilizou-os Samuel. É certo que fizeram mal, mas agora a questão é estarem certos de que adoram o Senhor com verdadeiro entusiasmo e que não se desviam dele, de forma alguma. Dos outros deuses, nenhum há que possa salvar-vos.22 O Senhor não abandonará o seu povo escolhido; tal coisa, a suceder, seria um descrédito para o seu grande nome. Ele fez de vocês uma nação especial, para si próprio; foi essa a sua vontade.23 Quanto a mim, pois, longe de mim o pecar contra o Senhor, deixando de orar por vocês; e hei-de continuar a ensinar-vos o que é bom e o que é recto.24 Confiem no Senhor e adorem-no com sinceridade; lembrem-se das coisas tremendas que fez por vocês. Mas se continuarem a pecar, tanto vocês como o vosso rei serão destruídos.

1 And Samuel said to all Israel, behold, I have hearkened to your voice in all that ye said to me, and have made a king over you.2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and gray-headed; and behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood to this day.3 Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed; whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or from whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes with it? and I will restore it you.4 And they said thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught from any man's hand.5 And he said to them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.6 And Samuel said to the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt.7 Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.8 When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers from Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.9 And when they forgot the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.10 And they cried to the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.11 And the LORD sent Jerubbaal and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you from the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt safe.12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said to me, No; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.13 Now therefore, behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.14 If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye, and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God.15 But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.16 Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.17 Is it not wheat-harvest to-day? I will call to the LORD, and he will send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.18 So Samuel called to the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.19 And all the people said to Samuel, Pray for thy servants to the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.20 And Samuel said to the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;21 And turn ye not aside: for then would ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.22 For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.23 Moreover as for me, Far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:24 Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye will be consumed, both ye and your king.
