1 Então o povo de Quiriate-Jearim veio buscar a arca; e levaram-na para o outeiro onde estava a casa de Abinadabe. Depois consagraram Eleazar, o filho dele, como guarda responsável pela arca.2 Esta ficou ali durante vinte anos, e todo esse tempo Israel se lamentava porque o Senhor parecia que os tinha abandonado.3 Por fim Samuel dirigiu-se a eles todos dizendo: Se realmente estão desejosos de se voltarem e converterem ao Senhor, então abandonem os vossos deuses estranhos e os ídolos astarotes. Decidam-se a obedecer unicamente ao Senhor e ele vos livrará dos filisteus.4 Foi o que fizeram: destruíram enfim os ídolos de Baal e Astarote e adoraram apenas o Senhor.5 Depois, Samuel disse-lhes: Venham todos até Mizpá e eu orarei ao Senhor por vocês.6 Juntaram-se em Mizpá e numa grande cerimónia solene tiraram água do poço e derramaram-na perante o Senhor. Jejuaram também todo aquele dia em sinal de tristeza pelos seus pecados. Foi assim em Mizpá que Samuel se tornou juiz de Israel.7 Quando os líderes dos filisteus ouviram acerca da grande multidão que se concentrava em Mizpá, mobilizaram o seu exército e avançaram sobre Israel. Os israelitas ficaram aterrorizados ao saberem do avanço do inimigo.8 Não cesses de clamar ao Senhor por nós para que nos salve e nos livre deles!, imploraram a Samuel.9 Samuel pegou num cordeirinho de mama e sacrificou-o inteiro em holocausto ao Senhor, a favor de Israel. O Senhor pois respondeu. Na própria altura em que Samuel estava a sacrificar o holocausto, chegaram os filisteus para a batalha; e aconteceu que o Senhor fez trovejar com grande violência sobre os filisteus; estes ficaram de tal modo aterrados que os israelitas puderam derrotá-los, perseguindo-os de Mizpá até Bete-Car, ferindo-os por todo aquele caminho.12 Samuel pegou então numa pedra e colocou-a entre Mizpá e Sem, dando-lhe o nome de Ebenezer , explicando que: Até aqui nos ajudou o Senhor!13 Os filisteus foram enfim subjugados e nunca mais invadiram Israel durante todo o resto da vida de Samuel porque o Senhor foi contra eles. As cidades israelitas entre Ecrom e Gate, que tinham sido conquistadas pelos filisteus, tornaram à posse de Israel, porque o exército israelita pôde resgatá-las das mãos dos seus conquistadores filisteus. Houve enfim paz entre Israel e os amorreus naqueles dias.15 Samuel continuou como juiz de Israel durante todo o resto da sua vida. Visitava as diferentes regiões do território anualmente, estabelecendo a base do seu tribunal primeiro em Betel, depois em Gilgal, e enfim em Mizpá; todos os casos de litígio eram-lhe trazidos, vindos de todo o território, a cada uma das três cidades indicadas. Depois regressava a Ramá, porque era ali que morava e ali também continuava a julgar os conflitos. Também construiu um altar ao Senhor em Ramá.

1 And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and brought up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.2 And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.3 And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods, and Ashtaroth, from among you, and prepare your hearts to the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.4 Then the children of Israel put away Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you to the LORD.6 And they assembled at Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and there said, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were assembled at Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry to the LORD our God for us, that he will save us from the hand of the Philistines.9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt-offering wholly to the LORD: and Samuel cried to the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.10 And as Samuel was offering the burnt-offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car.12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the borders of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and the borders of it did Israel deliver from the hands of the Philistines: and there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth-el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar to the LORD.
