1 David deixou Gate e foi-se esconder na caverna de Adulão, onde aliás em breve se lhe juntaram os irmãos e outros parentes. E mais gente ainda começou a vir ter com ele - pessoas que de alguma maneira se encontravam em apertos, ou endividados, ou revoltados por qualquer coisa - de tal forma que reuniu à sua volta uns quatrocentos homens.3 Mais tarde David foi a Mizpá, em Moabe, pedir licença ao rei para deixar viver ali seus pais, sob protecção real, até saber o que Deus faria dele. E lá ficaram então todo o período em que David se manteve no seu refúgio fortificado.5 Um dia, o profeta Gad disse a David para deixar a caverna e voltar para a terra de Judá. David foi pois para a floresta de Herete. Rapidamente a sua chegada a Judá chegou aos ouvidos de Saul, que se encontrava em Gibeá naquela altura, instalado debaixo dum carvalho, jogando com a lança, rodeado da corte.7 Ouçam-me bem, gente de Benjamim! exclamou o rei quando recebeu a notícia. Será porque David vos prometeu campos, vinhas e postos no exército para toda a gente, será por isso que estão todos contra mim? Porque é que não houve um só sequer de vocês que me tivesse avisado de que o meu próprio filho tinha feito aliança com David! Vocês não têm pena nenhuma de mim! Pensem só no que me acontece: o meu próprio filho encorajando David a vir aqui matar-me!9 Doegue, o edomita, que ali estava, acompanhando a corte de Saul, pediu para falar: Quando estive em Nobe vi David a conversar com o sacerdote Abimeleque. Este consultou o Senhor sobre o que David havia de fazer e depois deu-lhe alimento, mais a espada de Golias.11 O rei convocou imediatamente Abimeleque, assim como os outros sacerdotes em Nobe. Quando estes chegaram, Saul gritou: Ouve lá, tu, filho de Aitube!Estou a ouvir, meu senhor!, respondeu Abimeleque a tremer.13 Porque é que tu e David conspiraram contra mim. Porque lhe deste de comer, mais uma espada, e ainda consultaram Deus a favor dele? Porque é que o encorajaste a revoltar-se contra mim e vir aqui atacar-me?14 Mas, senhor, haverá entre os vossos servos alguém que vos seja mais fiel do que o vosso genro? Porque razão é ele afinal vosso pajem e dos membros mais honrados da vossa corte? Nem foi esta, com certeza, a primeira vez que consultei o Senhor a favor dele! Não é justo que eu seja acusado, mais a minha família, dessas coisas que ouvi; nós nada sabíamos de semelhante conspiração!16 Terás de morrer, Abimeleque, tu e toda a tua família!, gritou-lhe o rei. Depois,17 dirigindo-se aos ajudantes: Matem estes sacerdotes, porque são aliados na conspiração de David; eles bem sabiam que ele andava fugido e nada me disseram! No entanto os soldados recusaram fazer mal aos sacerdotes.18 Então Saul disse para Doegue: Faz tu isso. Doegue foi para eles e matou-os, oitenta e cinco sacerdotes, no total, todos trazendo as vestimentas sacerdotais.19 Depois foi a Nobe, à cidade dos sacerdotes, e matou as famílias dos sacerdotes - homens, mulheres, crianças e até bebés; assim como bois, jumentos e cordeiros.20 Só Abiatar, um dos filhos de Abimeleque conseguiu escapar e fugir para junto de David, e lhe contou o que acontecera. Ao ouvir isto, David exclamou: Eu já estava à espera disto! Quando vi ali Doegue, fiquei logo com a certeza de que Saul havia de ser avisado. Fui eu o culpado da morte de toda a tua família.23 Fica comigo e proteger-te-ei como à minha própria vida. Só poderão fazer-te mal depois de me tirarem a vida.

1 David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave Adullam: and when his brethren and all his father's house heard it, they went down thither to him.2 And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, resorted to him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men.3 And David went thence to Mizpeh of Moab: and he said to the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth, and be with you, till I know what God will do for me.4 And he brought them before the king of Moab: and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the hold.5 And the prophet Gad said to David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and come into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth.6 When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;)7 Then Saul said to his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjaminites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds;8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that showeth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or showeth to me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.10 And he inquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.13 And Saul said to him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honorable in thy house?15 Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? be it far from me. Let not the king impute any thing to his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.17 And the king said to the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not show it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD.18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day eighty and five persons that wore a linen ephod.19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.21 And Abiathar showed David that Saul had slain the LORD'S priests.22 And David said to Abiathar, I knew that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
