1 Por essa altura, Naás, à frente do exército dos amonitas, atacou a cidade israelita de Jabes-Gileade. Os cidadãos de Jabes no entanto pediram-lhe tréguas: Faz connosco uma aliança de paz e te serviremos.2 Está bem, disse Naás, mas só numa condição: esvaziar-vos, a cada um de vocês, o olho direito, para vergonha de toda a nação!3 Então dá-nos ao menos sete dias, para vermos se conseguimos obter auxílio de alguém em Israel, responderam os anciãos de Jabes. Se nenhum dos nossos irmãos vier socorrer-nos, aceitamos a tua proposta.4 Quando um mensageiro da povoação chegou a Gibeá onde Saul vivia, e expôs às pessoas o apuro em que se encontravam, toda a gente desatou a chorar e a lamentar-se em voz alta.5 Saul tinha estado a lavrar no campo e regressava com os bois: O que é que se passa? Para que é este choro todo? Contaram-lhe então o que aconteceu com a gente em Jabes.6 O Espírito do Senhor desceu poderosamente sobre Saul, que ficou extremamente irado. Pegou assim em dois bois, cortou-os em pedaços e enviou-os por todo o Israel. Isto é o que vai acontecer aos bois de todo aquele que recusar seguir Saul e Samuel à batalha!, anunciou. Deus fez com que o povo tomasse em consideração, com todo o temor, a cólera de Saul, e assim juntaram-se todos a ele, como um só homem. Contou-os depois em Bezeque, e eram trezentos mil, além dos de Judá que eram, só eles, trinta mil.9 Mandou pois mensageiros a Jabes-Gileade, que lhes dissessem: Salvar-vos-emos amanhã antes do meio-dia.Que alegria não foi na cidade quando esta mensagem chegou! Os homens de Jabes disseram então astutamente aos seus inimigos: Rendemo-nos. Amanhã vamos ter convosco e poderão fazer-nos o que vos apetecer.11 Na manhã seguinte, logo muito cedo, Saul chegou, dividiu o exército em três destacamentos militares e caiu de surpresa sobre os amonitas, matando neles toda a manhã; os que escaparam com vida foram de tal maneira perseguidos que nem sequer conseguiram ficar dois juntos.12 Então o povo exclamou para Samuel: Onde está essa gente que dizia que Saul não haveria de ser nosso rei? Que sejam trazidos aqui para os matarmos!13 Mas Saul respondeu: Ninguém será castigado hoje; porque foi um dia em que o Senhor salvou Israel!14 Depois Samuel disse para o povo: Venham, vamos todos a Gilgal confirmar Saul como nosso rei.15 Ali, numa cerimónia solene perante o Senhor, coroaram-no rei. Depois ofereceram ofertas de paz ao Senhor; Saul e todo o Israel estavam muito felizes.

1 Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh-gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.3 And the elders of Jabesh said to him, Give us seven days respit, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel: and then, if there is no man to save us, we will come out to thee.4 Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people; and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.5 And behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.6 And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.7 And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.8 And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.9 And they said to the messengers that came, thus shall ye say to the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow by the time the sun is hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and showed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To-morrow we will come out to you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good to you.11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul disposed the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning-watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they who remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.12 And the people said to Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.13 And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to-day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.15 And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal: and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
