1 Pegou então num recipiente contendo azeite e derramou-lho sobre a cabeça; beijou-o no rosto e disse-lhe: Estou a fazer isto porque o Senhor te designou para seres o rei do seu povo Israel.2 Depois de me deixares, verás dois indivíduos junto ao túmulo de Raquel, em Zelza, na terra de Benjamim; dir-te-ão que os jumentos já foram encontrados, e que o teu pai está preocupado contigo e a perguntar-se: 'Mas onde estará o meu filho?'3 Quando chegares ao carvalho de Tabor verás três homens vindo na tua direcção, os quais vão adorar Deus em Betel; um deles trás consigo três cabritinhos, outro, três pães e o terceiro tem um garrafão com vinho.4 Eles hão-de cumprimentar-te e oferecer-te-ão dois dos pães, que deverás aceitar.5 Após isso virás até Gibeate-Eloim, conhecido por o outeiro de Deus, onde está a guarnição dos filisteus. Quando lá chegares encontrarás um grupo de profetas descendo o outeiro e tocando vários instrumentos, um saltério, um tamborim, uma flauta e uma harpa e profetizando ao mesmo tempo.6 Nessa altura o Espírito do Senhor virá sobre ti com poder, e profetizarás no meio deles; sentir-te-ás e actuarás como uma pessoa diferente. A partir daquela altura, as tuas decisões basear-se-ão no que melhor te parecer, de acordo com as circunstâncias, porque o Senhor te guiará. Vai então para Gilgal e espera sete dias por mim, porque hei-de lá ir para sacrificar holocaustos e sacrifícios de paz. Dar-te-ei mais instruções quando lá chegar.9 Depois de se despedir, ao encetar o caminho de regresso, Deus deu a Saul uma nova atitude, e todas as profecias de Samuel se realizaram. Quando ele e o criado chegaram ao outeiro de Deus, depararam com os tais profetas que vinham na direcção deles, e o Espírito do Senhor desceu sobre ele, começando também a profetizar.11 Quando as pessoas que o conheciam ouviram aquilo exclamaram: O quê? Saul um profeta? E um dos seus vizinhos acrescentou: E com um pai como o dele? É esta a origem do provérbio que diz: Está Saul também entre os profetas?13 Quando Saul acabou de profetizar, subiu o resto do outeiro até ao altar. Um tio dele perguntou-lhe nessa altura: Mas então por onde é que tu andaste? Fomos à procura dos jumentos, e não pudemos encontrá-los; depois resolvemos ir ao profeta Samuel para lhe perguntar onde poderiam estar os animais.15 Ah sim? E que foi que ele disse?, perguntou-lhe o tio.16 Que os jumentos já tinham sido encontrados! Mas Saul não quis contar o resto, que tinha sido ungido como rei.17 Samuel convocou todo o povo para uma assembleia em Mizpá, e deu-lhe esta mensagem do Senhor Deus: Trouxe-te do Egipto e resgatei-te de todas as nações que te torturavam. Mas ainda que tenha feito tantas coisas a teu favor, rejeitas-te-me e disseste: 'Queremos antes ter um rei!'. Pois bem, apresentem-se todos perante o Senhor, tribo a tribo, família a família.20 Samuel chamou portanto os chefes de tribo, todos juntamente, perante o Senhor, e a tribo de Benjamim foi escolhida por sorteio sagrado. Depois trouxe cada família de Benjamim perante o Senhor, e foi escolhida a família de Matri. Até que finalmente, sempre por sorteio sagrado, foi seleccionado Saul, filho de Cis. Mas quando foram à sua procura, tinha desaparecido!22 E perguntaram ao Senhor: Onde é que ele estará? Estará aqui entre nós? O Senhor respondeu: Está escondido entre a bagagem.23 Foram então lá buscá-lo, trouxeram-no e puseram-no no meio de toda a gente - ele sobressaía em altura, acima dos ombros, em relação a fosse quem fosse!24 Samuel disse a todos: É este o homem que o Senhor escolheu para vosso rei. Não há outro igual em todo Israel!E o povo inteiro gritou: Viva o rei!25 Samuel expôs-lhes novamente os direitos e deveres de um rei; escreveu-os num livro e guardou-o perante o Senhor. Depois despediu o povo.26 Quando Saul foi para casa, em Gibeá, formou-se um grupo de homens, cujo coração foi tocado pelo Senhor, que se tornaram seus companheiros constantes. Houve no entanto alguns marginais que exclamavam: Mas como é que esse indivíduo nos pode livrar? E desprezaram-no, recusando trazer-lhe presentes. Porém Saul não ligou a isso.

1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?2 When thou hast departed from me to-day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulcher in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say to thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?3 Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:4 And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive from their hands.5 After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou hast come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp before them; and they will prophesy:6 And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.7 And let it be, when these signs have come to thee, that thou do as occasion shall serve thee; for God is with thee.8 And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to thee, to offer burnt-offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.9 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.11 And it came to pass when all that formerly knew him saw, that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that hath come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?12 And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?13 And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.14 And Saul's uncle said to him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.15 And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, What Samuel said to you.16 And Saul said to his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he told him not.17 And Samuel called the people together to the LORD to Mizpeh;18 And said to the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:19 And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities, and your tribulations; and ye have said to him, No, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.22 Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man would yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.23 And they ran and brought him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.24 And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.26 And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.27 But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
