1 Voltando Saul de combater os filisteus, disseram-lhe que David tinha ido para os lugares desertos de Engedi. Levou então consigo três mil homens da tropa de elite e foi em busca dele por entre os desfiladeiros rochosos e por caminhos de acesso a cabras monteses!3 Chegado a um sítio onde costumavam descansar rebanhos de ovelhas, Saul retirou-se para uma gruta, para fazer as suas necessidades. Ora aconteceu que nessa gruta estavam justamente escondidos David e os companheiros!4 É agora a tua vez!, murmuraram-lhe os seus homens. Este é o dia do que o Senhor falava quando dizia, 'Dar-te-ei o teu inimigo nas tuas mãos e far-lhe-ás como melhor entenderes'. David rastejou com muito cuidado até Saul e cortou-lhe, sem ele sentir, um pedação da capa que trazia.5 Contudo, logo a seguir, a sua consciência ficou a acusá-lo.6 Não devia ter feito isto, disse para a sua gente. É um grave pecado atacar de alguma maneira o rei que foi escolhido por Deus.7 E foi com estas palavras que persuadiu os companheiros a não matarem Saul epois de deixar aquela gruta, Saul continuou o seu caminho.8 David saíu e gritou atrás dele: Ó rei, meu senhor! Saul olhou para donde vinha a voz, e David inclinou-se por terra.9 A seguir continuou: Porque é que dás ouvidos às pessoas que te dizem que eu quero o teu mal?10 Hoje vais ter a prova de que tal não é verdade. O Senhor pôs-te à minha mercê, ali naquela gruta, e até alguns dos meus homens me disseram para te matar; mas eu poupei-te. Porque disse para comigo, 'Não lhe hei-de fazer mal, pois é o rei que o Senhor escolheu'. Olha aqui o que eu tenho nas mãos. É um pedaço da tua capa. Cortei-o sem te ter feito mal algum! Será que isto não te convence ainda de que não tenho a mínima intenção de te fazer mal algum e de que não pequei em nada contra ti, apesar de andares todo o tempo a perseguir-me?12 O Senhor é que há-de julgar entre nós dois. É possível que ele te venha a matar por aquilo que procuras fazer-me; mas eu quanto a mim nunca te farei mal. Como diz aquele velho provérbio: 'O perverso actua pervsersamente'. Mas apesar da tua maldade, eu não te hei-de tocar.14 E, ao fim e ao cabo, atrás de quem anda o rei de Israel? O que é que o faz andar a perder o seu tempo, perseguindo um indivíduo que vale tanto como um cão morto, ou como uma pulga? Que seja pois o Senhor a julgar qual de nós tem razão e que ele castigue aquele que é culpado. Ele é o meu juiz e o meu advogado. Ele me defenderá da tua mão!16 David, meu filho, és tu mesmo quem estou a ouvir?, disse Saul depois de ele acabar. Então desatou a chorar. Acrescentou a seguir: Tu és melhor do que eu, porque me pagaste o mal com o bem. Sim foste extremamente bom para comigo hoje, pois que quando o Senhor me entregou nas tuas mãos, não me mataste. Quem mais no mundo deixaria o seu adversário ir-se embora depois de o ter ao seu alcance? Que o Senhor te recompense pelo bem que hoje me fizeste. Dou-me conta agora de que tu te tornarás efectivamente rei e que Israel será bem governado sob a tua mão. Jura-me em todo o caso, pelo Senhor, que, quando isso acontecer, pouparás a minha família e não acabarás com a linha da minha descendência.22 David prometeu, e Saul foi-se embora. Mas David regressou à gruta.

1 \23:29\Then David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at En-gedi.2 \24:1\And it came to pass, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told to him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.3 \24:2\Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.4 \24:3\And he came to the sheep-cotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.5 \24:4\And the men of David said to him, Behold the day of which the LORD said to thee, Behold, I will deliver thy enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. Then David arose, and privately cut off the skirt of Saul's robe.6 \24:5\And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.7 \24:6\And he said to his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.8 \24:7\So David restrained his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose out of the cave, and went on his way.9 \24:8\David also rose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.10 \24:9\And David said to Saul, Why hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?11 \24:10\Behold, this day thy eyes have seen how the LORD hath delivered thee to-day into my hand in the cave; and some bade me kill thee: but my eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.12 \24:11\Moreover, my father, see, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.13 \24:12\The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but my hand shall not be upon thee.14 \24:13\As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but my hand shall not be upon thee.15 \24:14\After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea?16 \24:15\The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thy hand.17 \24:16\And it came to pass when David had made an end of speaking these words to Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.18 \24:17\And he said to David, thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded thee with evil.19 \24:18\And thou hast showed this day how thou hast dealt with me; forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thy hand, thou didst not kill me.20 \24:19\For if a man findeth his enemy, will he let him go away well? wherefore the LORD reward thee with good, for what thou hast done to me this day.21 \24:20\And now, behold, I know well that thou wilt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in thy hand.22 \24:21\Swear now therefore to me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.23 \24:22\And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men repaired to the hold.
