1 David então fugiu de Naiote em Ramá e encontrou-se com Jónatas. Que foi que eu fiz?, exclamou. Porque é que teu pai procura tirar-me a vida?2 Não é verdade!, protestou Jónatas. Tenho a certeza de que ele não está a planear uma tal coisa, pois que sempre me diz tudo o que pensa fazer, mesmo as mais pequenas coisas, e sei que não me esconderia um projecto desses. Não, isso não pode ser.3 Tu é que não sabes o que se passa! Teu pai sabe bem da nossa amizade e por isso pensa para consigo, 'Não vou dizer nada a Jónatas para não o magoar.'Mas a verdade é que eu ando constantemente a dois passos da morte - tão verdade como o Senhor ser vivo e ser viva a tua alma!4 Jónatas disse-lhe: Então diz-me o que poderei fazer em teu favor.5 Amanhã começa a celebração da lua nova. Anteriormente sempre passei essa ocasião com o teu pai, mas amanhã escondo-me no campo e fico lá até à noite do terceiro dia. Se o teu pai perguntar onde estou eu, diz-lhe que pedi licença para ir a casa a Belém, para a reunião anual de família. Se responder, 'Está bem!9 Com certeza que não faria uma coisa dessas!, exclamou Jónatas. Eu não deixaria de te avisar se soubesse que o meu pai estava com intenções de te matar!10 Então David perguntou, Como hei-de eu saber se o teu pai está ou não zangado?11 Vamos para o campo, convidou Jónatas. E sairam juntos.12 Jónatas disse então a David: Prometo, pelo Senhor Deus de Israel, que amanhã por esta altura do dia, ou depois de amanhã o mais tardar, falarei ao meu pai a teu respeito e dar-te-ei a conhecer definitivamente o que ele sente por ti. Se estiver encolerizado e com a intenção de te matar, então que seja o Senhor a matar-me se eu não to disser, para que possas escapar e viver. Que o Senhor seja contigo como foi antes com o meu pai. E lembra-te de que deves demonstrar o amor e a bondade do Senhor não só para comigo, durante a minha vida, mas também para com os meus filhos, depois do Senhor ter destruído todos os teus inimigos.16 Assim Jónatas fez uma aliança com a família de David, e este jurou respeitar essa aliança, sob o risco de terríveis maldições contra si próprio e contra os seus descendentes no caso de vir a ser infiel à sua promessa. Jónatas fez que David jurasse segunda vez, pela grande amizade que havia entre eles; porque lhe queria tanto quanto a si próprio.18 Então Jónatas disse: Sim, amanhã eles darão pela tua falta à mesa, quando virem o teu lugar vazio. Depois de amanhã, toda a gente perguntará por ti; por isso mantém-te no esconderijo onde te encontrares, junto à pedra de Ezel. Eu aproximar-me-ei desse sítio e atirarei três setas em direcção à pedra, como se estivesse a atirar ao alvo. A seguir mandarei um moço ir buscar as setas. Se me ouvires dizer-lhe: 'Procura-as aí, que estão aí mesmo24 Assim David escondeu-se no campo. Quando a celebração da lua nova começou, o rei sentou-se para comer no seu lugar habitual, junto à parede. Jónatas sentou-se à sua frente e Abner ao lado de Saul, ficando vazio o lugar de David. Saul nada disse sobre o facto, durante o dia todo, porque supos que qualquer coisa teria acontecido a David que o tivesse tornado ritualmente impuro. Mas quando no dia seguinte o seu lugar continuou vazio, perguntou a Jónatas: Porque é que David não veio comer, nem ontem nem hoje?28 Ele pediu-me se podia ir a Belém tomar parte na celebração que faz a família, respondeu Jónatas. O irmão pediu para ele lá estar, e eu disse-lhe que fosse.30 Saul ficou ardendo em ira: Filho duma cadela!, gritou-lhe. Pensas tu que eu não sei muito bem que aliaste a esse filho de Jessé, envergonhando-te a ti mesmo e à tua família? Enquanto esse indivíduo for vivo, tu nunca serás rei. Vai já à procura dele para que o mate!32 Mas que mal fez ele? Porque é que havia de morrer?33 Então Saul atirou-lhe com a lança para o matar. Jónatas deu-se bem conta com efeito de que o seu pai estava absolutamente decidido a matar David. Deixou a mesa profundamente revoltado e recusou comer naquele dia por causa do vergonhoso comportamento do seu pai para com David.35 Na manhã seguinte, como combinado, saiu para o campo, e levou consigo um moço que lhe fosse apanhar setas.36 Vai a correr apanhar as setas que eu atirar. Este partiu e ele atirou uma seta que fez passar adiante dele. Quando o rapaz estava quase a chegar ao sítio gritou-lhe: A seta está mais à frente de ti. Avia-te, não demores. O moço apanhou as setas, e veio entregá-las a Jónatas, sem ter percebido nada das intenções do seu senhor. Só Jónatas e David sabiam do significado daquelas palavras.40 Jónatas entregou as setas e o arco ao rapaz, e disse-lhe que regressasse à cidade.41 Logo que o rapaz partiu, David saiu do lugar onde estava escondido, para o lado sul do campo, veio ao seu encontro, abraçaram-se tristemente e ficaram ambos a chorar. David estava mesmo inconsolável!42 Por fim Jónatas disse-lhe: Olha, tem coragem, porque no fundo confiámos as nossas vidas e as vidas de nossos filhos nas mãos de Deus para sempre. Então separaram-se, e Jónatas regressou à cidade.

1 And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what is my iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?2 And he said to him, Far be it from thee; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing, either great or small, but that he will show it to me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so.3 And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he should be grieved: But truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.4 Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee.5 And David said to Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the new-moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third day at evening.6 If thy father shall at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me, that he might run to Beth-lehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.7 If he shall say thus, It is well; thy servant will have peace: but if he shall be very wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.8 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there is in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldst thou bring me to thy father?9 And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil is determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?10 Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father shall answer thee roughly?11 And Jonathan said to David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.12 And Jonathan said to David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to-morrow any time, or the third day, and behold, if there be good towards David, and I then send not to thee, and show it thee;13 The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it shall please my father to do thee evil, then I will show it to thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.14 And thou shalt, not only while yet I live, show me the kindness of the LORD, that I may not die:15 But also thou shalt not withdraw thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.16 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the LORD even require it at the hand of David's enemies.17 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.18 Then Jonathan said to David, To-morrow is the new-moon: and thou wilt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.19 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.20 And I will shoot three arrows on the side of it, as though I shot at a mark.21 And behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, find the arrows. If I expressly say to the lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; as the LORD liveth.22 But if I say thus to the young man, Behold, the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.23 And as to the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD be between thee and me for ever.24 So David hid himself in the field: and when the new-moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.25 And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.26 Nevertheless Saul spoke not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he is not clean; surely he is not clean.27 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said to Jonathan his son, Why cometh not the son of Jesse to eat, neither yesterday, nor to-day?28 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Beth-lehem:29 And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother he hath commanded me to be there: and now if I have found favor in thy eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not to the king's table.30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy own confusion, and to the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?31 For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.32 And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, Why shall he be slain? what hath he done?33 And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David.34 So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.35 And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.36 And he said to his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow, beyond him.37 And when the lad had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow beyond thee?38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.39 But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.40 And Jonathan gave his arms to his lad, and said to him, Go, carry them to the city.41 And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of a place towards the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.42 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever.\43 \20:42\And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
