1 Um dia disse Samuel a Saul: Coroei-te rei de Israel por indicação do Senhor. Por isso agora ouve bem isto que o Senhor te manda:2 'Decidi lembrar à nação dos amalequitas o que ela fez, que recusou permitir que o meu povo atravessasse o seu território quando vinha do Egipto, e castigá-los-ei por isso. Deverás agora destruí-los totalmente - homens, mulheres, crianças, mesmo os bebés; e também bois, ovelhas, camelos e jumentos.'4 Saul mobilizou então o exército em Telaim. Eram ao todo duzentos mil soldados de infantaria, além de dez mil só de Judá. Os amalequitas acamparam-se num vale mais abaixo donde eles estavam. Saul enviou uma mensagem aos queneus, dizendo-lhes para sairem do meio dos de Amaleque, porque se não, morreriam com eles: Pois que vocês foram bons com o povo de Israel quando voltava do Egipto, explicou-lhes. Os queneus seguiram o aviso e retiraram-se.7 Saul matou amalequitas desde Havilá por todo o caminho até Sur, a oriente do Egipto. Capturou Agague, o rei deles, mas matou o resto da gente toda. No entanto Saul e os seus homens conservaram com vida o melhor dos bois, das ovelhas, os cordeiros mais gordos - tudo, enfim, que mais os interessou. Só destruíram o que lhes pareceu desprezável e sem qualidade.10 Então o Senhor disse a Samuel:11 Lamento ter posto Saul como rei; deixou de me seguir, de executar a minha palavra. Samuel ficou profundamente contristado quando ouviu Deus dizer aquilo, de tal maneira que passou toda a noite a chorar. Logo de manhã cedo foi ao encontro de Saul. Mas alguém lhe disse que ele tinha ido ao monte Carmelo erigir um monumento em sua própria honra, seguindo depois para Gilgal. Quando finalmente Samuel o encontrou, Saul veio logo ter com ele, saudando-o:Como passas? Tenho a dizer-te que já dei cumprimento às ordens do Senhor!14 Sim? Mas então que balido de ovelhas e que mugido de vacas é esse que estou a ouvir?15 Pois, com efeito, é verdade que o exército poupou o melhor que havia de ovelhas e de vacas. Mas é para serem sacrificadas ao Senhor teu Deus. Tudo o resto destruímos totalmente.16 Não digas mais nada! Escuta agora o que o Senhor me disse esta noite!Mas que foi?, perguntou Saul.17 Numa altura em que ainda não te tinhas em grande consideração a ti próprio, Deus fez de ti rei de Israel. Depois mandou-te cumprir esta acção, ordenando-te: 'Vai destruir completamente esses pecadores amalequitas, até que todos estejam mortos.' Sendo assim, por que razão não obedeceste ao Senhor? Porque é que te lançaste sobre o despojo, fazendo exactamente aquilo que o Senhor mandara que não fizesses?20 Mas eu obedeci ao Senhor!, insistiu Saul. Fiz o que ele me disse; trouxe o rei Agague, mas matei todo o resto da gente. Foi só quando as tropas pediram para ficarem com o melhor dos animais e do saque que eu as autorizei, para oferecerem isso ao Senhor.22 Mas alguma vez o Senhor tem o mesmo prazer nos holocaustos e sacrifícios do que na obediência à sua palavra? Obedecer é muito melhor do que sacrificar! Ele está muito mais interessado em que o escutes e sigas, do que na gordura de carneiros. A rebelião é pecado tão grave como a própria feitiçaria; a obstinação é coisa tão má como a idolatria. Portanto, já que rejeitaste a palavra do Senhor, também o Senhor te pôs de parte como rei.24 Sim, eu pequei, admitiu finalmente Saul. É verdade que desobedeci às tuas instruções e às ordens do Senhor, porque tive medo do povo; por isso fiz o que eles me pediram. Rogo-te que me perdoes o meu pecado desta vez, e vem comigo adorar o Senhor.26 Não. Não vou contigo, visto que desprezaste a palavra do Senhor, e que por consequência o Senhor também já te rejeitou como rei de Israel.27 E quando Samuel se ia retirar, Saul ainda o agarrou pela aba da capa para o fazer voltar, rasgando-lhe um pedaço. E Samuel disse-lhe: Também o Senhor já rasgou de ti o reino de Israel, hoje mesmo, e o deu a um compatriota teu, melhor do que tu. Aquele que é a força de Israel não mente, nem muda de intenções; pois não é nenhum homem!30 Saul teimou: Pequei, com certeza. Mas ao menos honra-me perante os chefes e o povo, indo comigo adorar o Senhor teu Deus.31 Samuel concordou, desta vez, e foi com ele.32 Depois Samuel ordenou: Tragam-me aqui o rei Agague. Este chegou-se, todo confiante, pensando consigo mesmo, Com certeza que o pior já passou. Eles vão seguramente poupar-me a vida!33 Mas Samuel falou-lhe assim: A tua espada tirou os filhos a muitas mães; por isso agora será a tua mãe a ser desfilhada. E a seguir despedaçou-o ali mesmo, perante o Senhor em Gilgal.34 Samuel regressou a sua casa em Ramá; e Saul voltou para Gibeá.35 Samuel nunca mais tornou a encontrar-se com Saul, embora tendo ficado a ter muita pena dele. Também o Senhor ficou triste por o ter feito rei de Israel.

1 Samuel also said to Saul, the LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou to the voice of the words of the LORD.2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.4 And Saul assembled the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.6 And Saul said to the Kenites, Go, depart, withdraw yourselves from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye showed kindness to all the children of Israel when they came up from Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah, until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.10 Then came the word of the LORD to Samuel, saying,11 I repent that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried to the LORD all night.12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set him up a place, and has gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said to him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.16 Then Samuel said to Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said to him, Say on.17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thy own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go, and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.19 Why then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?20 And Saul said to Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD thy God in Gilgal.22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt-offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.24 And Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words; because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.26 And Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.27 And as Samuel turned about to depart, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.28 And Samuel said to him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbor of thine, that is better than thou.29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honor me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshiped the LORD.32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came to him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
