1 Três anos mais tarde o Senhor disse a Elias: Vai dizer ao rei Acabe que em breve enviarei chuva!2 Elias foi dizer-lho. Entretanto a fome tinha-se tornado catastrófica em Samaria.3 O homem que servia de intendente da casa de Acabe era Obadias, que era um devoto crente no Senhor. Certa vez, em que a rainha Jezabel tentara matar todos os profetas do Senhor, Obadias escondeu cem deles em duas grutas - cinquenta em cada uma - alimentado-os com pão e com água.5 Naquele mesmo dia, em que Elias estava a caminho para ir encontrar-se com o rei Acabe , este disse a Obadias: Temos de ir a todas as correntes e ribeiros para ver se arranjamos erva, para salvar pelo menos alguns dos meus cavalos e mulas. Eu irei por um lado e tu por outro; percorreremos toda a terra.6 Assim fizeram, indo cada um por seu lado, sozinhos. De repente Obadias viu Elias dirigindo-se na sua direcção. Reconheceu-o logo e inclinou-se até ao chão. És mesmo tu, meu senhor Elias?8 Sim, sou eu. Vai dizer ao rei que estou aqui.9 Oh, meu senhor, prostestou Obadias, que mal te fiz eu para que me condenes dessa forma à morte? Garanto-te, por Deus, que o rei andou à tua procura de uma extremidade à outra da terra e em todas as nações e reinos. De cada vez que lhe diziam 'Elias não está aqui15 Mas Elias respondeu-lhe: Juro-te, pelo Senhor Deus dos exércitos celestiais, em cuja presença vivo, que me apresentarei, eu próprio, perante Acabe hoje mesmo.16 Obadias sempre aceitou ir dizer a Acabe que Elias tinha regressado. Acabe foi ao seu encontro:17 Então és tu - não é verdade? - o homem que trouxe esta desgraça sobre Israel!, exclamou Acabe quando o viu.18 Tu é que tens perturbado Israel, não eu, respondeu o profeta. Porque tu e a tua família recusaram obedecer ao Senhor e têm prestado culto a Baal. Agora, faz todo o povo de Israel ir ao monte Carmelo, com todos os quatrocentos e cinquenta profetas de Baal, mais os quatrocentos profetas de Asera, que são mantidos por Jezabel.20 Acabe convocou todo o povo e os profetas para o monte Carmelo.21 Elias falou assim ao povo: Até quando coxearão entre dois caminhos? Se o Senhor é Deus, sigam-no! Se Baal é que é Deus, então sigam antes a esse!22 E depois acrescentou: Sou o único profeta do Senhor que ficou vivo; mas Baal tem 450 profetas. Tragam então dois bezerros. Que os profetas de Baal escolham um deles e que o cortem em peças que hão-de colocar sobre o seu altar, mas sem acender fogo; quanto a mim, preparei o outro bezerro e o porei sobre a lenha do altar do Senhor, sem lhe pôr fogo. Depois, orem vocês ao vosso deus e eu orarei ao meu Senhor; o deus que responder, mandando fogo para acender a lenha, esse é o verdadeiro Deus! E o povo todo concordou com esse teste.25 Elias voltou-se para os profetas de Baal: Primeiro vocês, porque são muitos; escolham um dos bezerros, preparem-no e clamem ao vosso deus; mas não acendam o fogo.26 Eles preparam um dos animais, puseram-no sobre o seu altar e clamaram a Baal toda a manhã, gritando: Ó Baal, ouve-nos! Mas não se via resposta alguma. Começaram mesmo a fazer danças em volta do altar.27 Por volta do meio dia, Elias ria-se deles: Têm de gritar ainda mais alto, para chamar a atenção do vosso deus! Talvez esteja a conversar com alguém, ou tenha ido tratar de algum assunto, ou então pode estar a viajar; quem sabe até se não estará a dormitar um pouco e precise de ser despertado!28 Eles gritavam cada vez mais alto; segundo o seu costume, laceravam-se a si próprios com facas e espadas, cobrindo-se de sangue. Assim estiveram, desesperados, até à altura do sacrifício da tarde, sem que se visse qualquer reacção ou se ouvisse alguma voz ou se recebesse uma resposta fosse de que tipo fosse.30 Então Elias chamou o povo para junto de si: Cheguem-se todos aqui. Toda a gente se concentrou à sua volta, enquanto ele arranjava o altar do Senhor, que tinha sido derrubado. Pegou em doze pedras para representarem cada uma das tribos de Israel , e empregou-as para levantar o altar do Senhor. Depois cavou um rego em volta, com a largura aproximadamente de um metro . Dispos a lenha sobre o altar e decepou o bezerro em pedaços que arrumou sobre a lenha. Encham quatro cântaros de água, mandou ele, deitem-na sobre as peças de carne e sobre a lenha. Depois de efectuarem o que ordenara, insistiu:34 Façam outra vez a mesma coisa. Eles obedeceram. Agora façam o mesmo uma terceira vez! E fizeram. A água escorria para o rego em volta do altar, enchendo-o.36 Chegando a altura da oferta do sacrifício da tarde, Elias subiu ao altar e orou assim: Ó Senhor Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Israel, prova hoje que és o Deus de Israel e que eu sou teu servo; dá a prova em como tudo isto que eu tenho feito é por ordens tuas. Ó Senhor, responde-me! Responde-me, para que este povo saiba que tu és Deus e que queres que o seu coração se arrependa.38 Então, veio fogo do céu e queimou a carne do sacrifício, a madeira do altar, as pedras, a terra, a ponto de até fazer evaporar a água do rego!39 Quando o povo viu aquilo, caíu com os seus rostos em terra, clamando: Jeová é Deus! Jeová é Deus!40 Elias mandou-lhes que agarrassem nos profetas de Baal: Não deixem escapar um só! Apanharam-nos a todos; Elias levou-os ao ribeiro de Cedrom e matou-os ali.41 Depois disse a Acabe. Podes ir tomar uma boa refeição! Porque estou a ouvir o ruído de uma grande chuvada que se aproxima!42 Acabe foi comer e beber. Elias no entanto subiu ao monte Carmelo e caiu de joelhos e com o rosto em terra, dizendo assim para o seu criado: Vai olhar na direcção do mar.O outro obedeceu e voltou dizendo: Não vejo nada.Volta de novo; faz isso sete vezes!44 Finalmente, à sétima vez, o criado disse-lhe: Já vejo uma pequena nuvem, do tamanho da mão de um ser humano, levantando-se sobre o mar.Elias gritou: Corre, ter com Acabe; diz-lhes que se meta no seu carro e que desça já, se não quer ser apanhado pela chuva!45 Aquela pequena nuvem em breve se tornou num amontoado de grossas nuvens negras; soprou uma forte ventania e caíram tremendas bátegas de água. Acabe foi para Jezreel.46 O Senhor deu a Elias uma capacidade especial para conseguir correr e chegar à entrada da cidade à frente do carro de Acabe.

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself to Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.2 And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. And there was a grievous famine in Samaria.3 And Ahab called Obadiah who was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all brooks: it may be we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab to slay me?10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation nor kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.12 And it will come to pass, as soon as I have gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD will carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he will slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he will slay me.15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him to-day.16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table.20 So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets to mount Carmel.21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD is God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.22 Then said Elijah to the people, I even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophet's are four hundred and fifty men.23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleepeth, and must be awaked.28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.29 And it came to pass, when mid-day was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.30 And Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt-sacrifice, and on the wood.34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.35 And the water ran around the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt-sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.40 And Elijah said to them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.41 And Elijah said to Ahab, Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look towards the sea. And he went up and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say to Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and go down, that the rain may not hinder thee.45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
