1 A coroação de Reboão deu-se em Siquem, e todo o Israel veio assistir à cerimónia.2 Jeroboão, que ainda se encontrava no Egipto, para onde fugira do rei Salomão, ouviu sobre o que acontecia em Israel através dos seus amigos, que o pressionaram a que também viesse assistir à cerimónia, juntamente com todo o Israel em Siquem. Ele assim fez e tornou-se o cabecilha do povo para apresentar certos pedidos a Reboão: O teu pai foi um senhor duro, disseram eles a Reboão. Não queremos que sejas nosso rei, a menos que prometas tratar-nos melhor do que ele fez.5 Dêem-me três dias para pensar nesse assunto, respondeu Reboão. Voltem depois para ter a resposta. E o povo foi-se embora.6 Reboão foi discutir o assunto com os velhos conselheiros do seu pai Salomão: O que é que pensam que devo fazer?7 Se lhes deres uma resposta favorável e concordares em ser bom para eles e servi-los bem, poderás vir a ser o seu rei para sempre.8 Reboão no entanto recusou o conselho desses anciãos e mandou vir os moços que tinham crescido com ele, e eram os seus amigos:9 Que acham vocês que eu devo fazer?10 Diz-lhes assim: 'Se julgam que o meu pai foi duro com vocês, eu sê-lo-ei ainda mais! Sim, o meu pai foi severo, mas eu serei ainda mais! Meu pai castigou-vos com chicotes, mas eu fá-lo-ei com escorpiões!'12 Dessa forma, quando o povo, ao fim dos três dias, veio saber a resposta, o novo rei respondeu-lhes rudemente. Ignorou pois o conselho dos anciãos e preferiu seguir o dos moços e recusou o pedido do povo. Mas nisso tudo estava a mão do Senhor, fazendo com que o novo rei agisse dessa maneira para cumprir a promessa feita a Jeroboão, pela boca de Aías, o profeta de Silo.16 Quando o povo se deu conta de que o rei tinha realmente a intensão de fazer o que dissera e de não ouvir o pedido deles, começaram a gritar: Abaixo com David e com todos os da sua família! Vão para casa! Que Reboão seja rei apenas da sua família!E todos se foram embora excepto a tribo de Judá, que permanceu leal e aceitou Reboão como rei. Quando o monarca enviou Adorão, que era administrador do serviço obrigatório, para fazer o alistamento dos homens das outras tribos, levantou-se um grande motim e apedrejaram-no até morrer. O rei Reboão conseguiu escapar num carro e fugiu para Jerusalém. Israel tem estado em rebelião contra a dinastia de David desde esse tempo.20 Quando o povo de Israel soube do regresso de Jeroboão do Egipto, pediram-lhe que se apresentasse perante o povo numa grande reunião, e aí foi feito rei de Israel. Apenas a tribo de Judá se manteve sob a liderança de um descendente da família de David.21 Quando o rei Reboão chegou a Jerusalém, convocou o exército - todos os homens aptos para a guerra de Judá e de Benjamim: 180.000 tropas especiais - para obrigarem o resto de Israel a reconhecê-lo como rei. Mas Deus enviou a seguinte mensagem a Semaías, o profeta: Diz a Reboão, o filho de Salomão, rei de Judá, e a todo o povo de Judá e de Benjamim, que não devem combater contra os seus irmãos, o povo de Israel; diz-lhes que se demobilizem e voltem para suas casas, porque o que aconteceu a Reboão correspondeu à minha vontade. Então o exército desfez-se, tal como o Senhor mandara.25 Jeroboão depois construiu a cidade de Siquem, na região das colinas de Efraim, que ficou sendo a sua capital. Mais tarde construiu Penuel. Jeroboão pensou da seguinte forma: Se eu não tiver cuidado, o povo pode requerer um descendente de David como seu rei. Quando forem a Jerusalém oferecer sacrifícios no templo, deixar-se-ão aliciar pelo rei Reboão; depois matar-me-ão e pedir-lhe-ão que se torne seu rei.28 Assim seguindo a opinião dos seus conselheiros, o rei fez dois bezerros de ouro e disse para o povo: Não é preciso mais darem-se ao trabalho de irem a Jerusalém para adorar; daqui em diante, estes serão os vossos deuses - foram eles que vos tiraram do cativeiro do Egipto!29 Um desses bezerros foi posto em Betel e outro em Dan. Na realidade isto foi um grande pecado, porque o povo pôs-se efectivamente a adorá-los. Mandou igualmente fazer nichos sobre colinas e ordenou sacerdotes saídos da gente menos qualificada do povo, sem sequer ter cuidado em que fossem da tribo sacerdotal de Levi.32 Jeroboão anunciou também que a festa anual dos tabernáculos se realizaria em Betel, a um de Novembro , uma data inteiramente do seu arbítrio, semelhante à que se realizaria em Jerusalém; ele próprio ofereceu sacrifícios sobre o altar dos bezerros em Betel e queimou incenso nele. Foi aí em Betel que ordenou os sacerdotes para os nichos sobre as colinas.

1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he had fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.5 And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?7 And they spoke to him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant to this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that had grown up with him, and who stood before him:9 And he said to them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?10 And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak to this people who spoke to thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter to us; thus shalt thou say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.11 And now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;14 And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.15 Wherefore the king hearkened not to the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thy own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.17 But as for the children of Israel who dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to enter his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.20 And it came to pass when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had come again, that they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.21 And when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand chosen men, who were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.22 But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,23 Speak to Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt in it, and went out from thence, and built Penuel.26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:27 If this people go up to perform sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and return to Rehoboam king of Judah.28 Upon which the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt.29 And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other he placed in Dan.30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even to Dan.31 And he made a house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, who were not of the sons of Levi.32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing to the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places which he had made.33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth-el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast to the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
