1 Ouvindo a rainha de Sabá toda a fama de Salomão e como o Senhor lhe tinha dado tantas qualidades, resolveu vir apresentar-lhe pessoalmente algumas questões especialmente complexas para ver a resposta que daria.2 Chegou assim a Jerusalém com uma grande comitiva e muitos camelos carregando especiarias, ouro e jóias. Ela pôs-lhe os problemas que entendeu e3 Salomão a tudo respondeu; nada se revelou muito difícil para ele - o Senhor deu-lhe de cada vez a resposta exacta.4 Ela depressa se deu conta de que tudo o que lhe tinham dito quanto à sua grande sabedoria era verdadeiro. Pôde igualmente constatar a beleza do seu palácio; e quando viu os ricos pratos que vinham à mesa, o grande número de criados e escravos a servir nos seus belos uniformes, mais os escanções, e os inúmeros sacrifícios que oferecia pelo fogo ao Senhor, então ficou como que fora de si, de espanto!6 Exclamou a rainha para Salomão: Tudo o que ouvi no meu país acerca da tua sabedoria e das belíssimas coisas que aqui há é verdade. Antes de cá chegar não podia acreditar em tal, mas agora eu própria verifiquei tudo com os meus próprios olhos. O que me tinham contado não correspondia sequer a metade da realidade! A tua sabedoria e a tua riqueza são, de longe, muito maiores do que aquilo que tinha ouvido! O teu povo é feliz, o pessoal do teu palácio está satisfeito; e como podia ser de outra forma se eles aqui vivem constantemente ouvindo a tua sabedoria! Bendito seja o Senhor teu Deus que te escolheu e te colocou sobre o trono de Israel. Como o Senhor deve amar Israel - porque lhe deu um rei como tu! E tu ofereces ao teu povo uma governação justa e boa!10 Depois, deu ao monarca um presente de quatro toneladas de ouro e mais uma enorme quantidade de especiarias e de pedras preciosas; na verdade foi esse o presente mais valioso que o rei Salomão jamais recebeu.11 (Quando os navios do rei Hirão trouxeram a Salomão ouro de Ofir, também carregaram para ele um grande fornecimento de pedras preciosas e também de madeira de almugue para fazer balaústres para o templo e para o palácio, e para fabricar instrumentos, tais como harpas e liras, que acompanhassem os cantores. Nunca antes nem depois se viu junta tanta quantidade desta bela madeira.)13 Em troca dos presentes recebidos da rainha de Sabá, o rei Salomão deu-lhe tudo o que ela lhe pediu, além dos presentes que já tinha planeado ofertar-lhe. Após isso ela regressou, com o seu séquito e os que a serviam, para a sua terra.14 Cada ano Salomão recebia ouro que pesava vinte e três toneladas, além das taxas e dos benefícios dos negócios que fazia com reis da Arábia e de outros territórios daquela região. Salomão mandou fazer, com parte desse ouro, duzentas peças de armadura, pesando cada uma três quilos e meio de ouro, e mais trezentos escudos, tendo mandado pesar para cada um aproximadamente quilo e meio de ouro. Conservou-os no Salão da Floresta do Líbano.16 Também fez construir um enorme trono de marfim e fê-lo revestir de ouro puro. Tinha seis degraus e um espaldar com descansos para os braços; havia um leão de cada lado. Nos degraus igualmente havia dois leões, um de cada lado, portanto doze ao todo. Não havia no mundo outro trono tão deslumbrante como aquele.21 Todas as taças que o rei Salomão usava eram de ouro puro; e no Salão da Floresta do Líbano todo o serviço de jantar era feito em ouro. Não se usava prata porque nesse tempo não tinha muito valor!22 A frota comercial do rei Salomão era de parceria com o rei Hirão, e uma vez todos os três anos um grande fornecimento de ouro, prata, marfim e também de macacos e de pavões chegava aos portos de Israel.23 Desta forma o rei Salomão era o mais rico e o mais sábio de todos os reis da Terra.24 Grandes homens de muitas terras vinham conversar com ele e ouvir a sabedoria que Deus lhe dera. Traziam-lhe igualmente presentes em peças de prata e de ouro, rico vestuário, especiarias, cavalos e mulas. Todos os anos recebia deles ou uma ou outra coisa dessas.26 O monarca construiu um grande estábulo para cavalos atribuídos a uma vasta quantidade de carros e de cavaleiros - mil e quatrocentos carros ao todo e doze mil cavaleiros viviam nessas cidades-estábulo e também com o rei Salomão em Jerusalém. A prata era tão comum como pedras em Jerusalém naqueles dias; também o cedro não era de muito mais valor do que simples madeira de figueira brava! Os cavalos de Salomão vinham-lhe do Egipto e do sul da Turquia onde os seus agentes os adquiriam por grosso. Um carro egípcio custava sete quilos de prata e um cavalo quilo e meio. Muitos deles eram depois vendidos de novo aos reis heteus e sírios.

1 And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to prove him with hard questions.2 And she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels that bore spices, and very much gold, and precious stones: and when she had come to Solomon, she communed with him of all that was in her heart.3 And Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not.4 And when the queen of Sheba had seen all Solomon's wisdom, and the house that he had built,5 And the provisions of his table, and the sitting of his servants, and the attendance of his ministers, and their apparel, and his cup-bearers, and his ascent by which he went up to the house of the LORD; there was no more spirit in her.6 And she said to the king, It was a true report that I heard in my own land of thy acts and of thy wisdom.7 Howbeit, I believed not the words, until I came, and my eyes had seen it: and behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard.8 Happy are thy men, happy are these thy servants, who stand continually before thee, and that hear thy wisdom.9 Blessed be the LORD thy God, who delighted in thee, to set thee on the throne of Israel: because the LORD loved Israel for ever, therefore he made thee king, to do judgment and justice.10 And she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices a very great quantity, and precious stones: there came no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.11 And the navy also of Hiram, that brought gold from Ophir, brought in from Ophir great plenty of almug trees, and precious stones.12 And the king made of the almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD, and for the king's house, harps also and psalteries for singers: there came no such almug-trees, nor have they been seen to this day.13 And king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked, besides that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and sixty six talents of gold,15 Besides what he had of the merchants, and of the traffic of the spice-merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia, and of the governors of the country.16 And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred shekels of gold went to one target.17 And he made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three pounds of gold went to one shield: and the king put them in the house of the forest of Lebanon.18 Moreover, the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the best gold.19 The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round behind: and there were stays on either side on the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside the stays.20 And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps: there was not the like made in any kingdom.21 And all king Solomon's drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.23 So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom.24 And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.25 And they brought every man his present, vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and garments, and armor, and spices, horses, and mules, a rate year by year.26 And Solomon collected chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem.27 And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars he made to be as the sycamore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.28 And Solomon had horses brought from Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.29 And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.
