1 Veio a mim novamente a palavra do Senhor:s2 Homem mortal, houve duas irmãs que, em novas, se tornaram prostitutas no Egipto.4 A mais velha chamava-se Aolá, e a outra, Aolibá. Correspondem, a primeira a Samaria e a segunda a Jerusalém! Casei com elas e deram-me filhos e filhas. Mas depois Aolá voltou-se para falsos deuses e deixou-me; deu o seu amor aos assírios, seus vizinhos.6 Eram todos eles gente atraente, jovens comandantes militares e magistrados, vestidos de um vistoso azul, pavoneando-se nos seus cavalos. E assim ela pecou com eles, que eram todos a fina flor da Assíria - adorou os ídolos deles, depravou-se inteiramente. Porque quando deixou o Egipto, não abandonou a sua inclinação para a prostituição, antes se manteve tão licenciosa como em jovem, quando os egípcios a cobriam de toda a sua lascívia e a corrompiam moralmente.9 Por isso a entreguei nas garras perversas dos assírios, cujos deuses ela tanto amou. Então despiram-na, mataram-na e levaram-lhe os filhos como escravos. O nome dela ficou conhecido por todas as mulheres da terra como o de uma pecadora que recebeu a justa recompensa do seu pecado.11 Mas Aolibá, apesar de ter visto o que aconteceu à irmã, continua a viver da mesmíssima maneira, e até pecou ainda mais do que ela. Também aliciou os seus vizinhos assírios, os tais jovens elegantes, vestidos a primor, oficiais do exército e magistrados, nos seus belos uniformes, tudo gente atraente. Vi então o caminho que ela seguia, indo precisamente atrás daquilo que perdeu a irmã.14 Na verdade esta foi até mais impudica do que Samaria; chegou a ficar apaixonada por imagens que viu pintadas nas paredes! Pinturas de oficiais do exército babilónico, muito aprumados nos seus uniformes vermelhos, apertados nos seus cinturões, cobertos com belos bonés militares. Quando viu aquelas figuras não teve outra ideia senão entregar-se completamente àqueles homens; e assim mandou mensageiros à Caldeia para os convidar a virem ter com ela. Os homens vieram e adulteraram com ela na sua cama de amores e a contaminaram com a sua impudicícia. Mas depois disso ela passou a odiá-los e cortou todas as relações com eles.18 Assim abandonei-a tal como tinha já abandonado a irmã, por terem andado atrás daquela gente, entregando-se às luxúrias deles. Mas parece que isso não a aborreceu: lançou-se em prostituições ainda maiores, pecando com homens devassos, de quem ainda se lembrava quando na sua juventude se prostituía no Egipto.21 E assim comemoraste esses dias passados em que, ainda uma rapariga, deste a tua virgindade a essa gente do Egipto.22 E agora o Senhor Deus diz que levantará contra ti, Aolibá (Jerusalém), essas mesmas nações de quem depois te desgostaste. Na verdade os babilónios hão-de vir, assim como todos os caldeus, de Pecode, de Soa, de Coa, e todos os filhos da Assíria com eles, mancebos atraentes de alta estirpe, montados garbosamente nos seus cavalos. Virão contra ti do lado do norte com carros de combate e um grande exército, completamente apetrechados para o combate. Cercar-te-ão por todos os lados com os seus soldados, e deixarei que façam contigo o que bem entenderem. Tens contra ti a minha indignação e tratar-te-ei sem tolerância. Hão-de deformar-te o corpo. Os que sobreviverem dessa matança acabarão por morrer com os outros. Os teus filhos serão cativos para escravos. Tudo será destruído pelas chamas. Despojar-te-ão das tuas belas roupas e jóias.27 Porei enfim uma travagem à lascívia e prostituição que trouxeste do Egipto; não mais terás saudades do Egipto e dos seus deuses.28 Porque o Senhor Deus diz: Certamente te entregarei aos teus inimigos, àqueles que detestaste.29 Tratar-te-ão com raiva, roubar-te-ão tudo o que tens e ficarás sem nada e nua. As vergonhas das tuas prostituições serão do conhecimento de todo o mundo.30 Tudo isto trouxeste tu própria sobre ti, por causa de te teres posto a adorar deuses de outras nações, corrompendo-te com todos os seus ídolos. Seguiste precisamente as pisadas da tua irmã, por isso te castigarei com as mesmas calamidades que a destruíram.32 Sim, as tragédias que cairam sobre ela também desabarão sobre ti - e essa taça que ela foi obrigada a beber era funda e estava cheia. O mundo inteiro se rirá de ti por causa dos teus males. Cambalearás como se estivesses embriagada sob tremendos golpes de amargura e de espanto, tal como aconteceu com tua irmã Samaria. Numa profunda angústia beberás até à última gota a taça de terror, e rasgarás os teus próprios seios. Sou eu próprio quem o anuncia. Visto que vocês se esqueceram de mim e me voltaram as costas, por isso terão de suportar as consequências inteiras do vosso pecado.36 Homem mortal, terás de acusar Jerusalém e Samaria de tudo o que de abominável praticaram. Cometeram adultérios e assassínios; adoraram ídolos e mataram os meus filhos, que elas me tinham gerado, sacrificando-os nos seus altares. Ao mesmo tempo profanaram o meu templo e ignoraram os meus sábados; porque quando sacrificaram os seus filhos perante os ídolos, nessas mesmas ocasiões iam ao meu templo para o profanarem! É esse o respeito que têm por mim!40 Chegaram a mandar chamar de terras distantes sacerdotes que viessem com os seus deuses para lhes prestarem culto; eles vieram e foram muito bem recebidos! Para essa ocasião te preparaste com toda a atenção, desde um banho cuidadoso, passando pelos cosméticos para te realçarem o rosto e os olhos e até às finas jóias com que te adornaste. Sentaste-te numa cama luxuosa e perfumaste o quarto, pondo do meu incenso e do meu óleo sobre uma mesa. Para quem estava do lado de fora, ouvia-se sair do teu quarto a barulheira de grande festança - gente licenciosa e devassa, que vinha lá do deserto, que te adornavam com os enfeites que tinham trazido, pulseiras, lindos diademas, etc. Irão eles prostituir-se com ela?44 Foram mesmo. Tomaram-nas - a Samaria e a Jerusalém, essas prostitutas desavergonhadas - com o à-vontade dos homens devassos que visitam qualquer mulher infame. As pessoas rectas, em toda a parte, julgá-las-ão como aquilo que realmente são - adúlteras e assassinas. Serão sentenciadas nos termos exactos da lei que transgrediram.46 Diz o Senhor Deus: Trarei contra elas um exército que as pilharão e esmagarão. Os seus inimigos as apedrejarão e matarão à espada; os seus filhos e filhas serão cruelmente degolados e suas habitações feitas em cinza. Será assim que hei-de pôr um fim da toda a devassidão e idolatria desta terra. Essa minha sentença ficará sendo uma lição para toda a gente contra tudo o que for idolatria. Serão castigados justamente por essa grande idolatria, por esse culto desbragado aos ídolos. Receberão o castigo, sem a menor tolerância. E saberão que só eu sou Deus.

1 The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,2 Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother:3 And they committed lewd deeds in Egypt; they committed lewd deeds in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they were first corrupted.4 And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bore sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.5 And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors.6 Who were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.7 Thus she committed her lewd deeds with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.8 Neither left she her lewd deeds brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they first corrupted her, and poured their impurities upon her.9 Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.10 These uncovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.11 And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her prostitutions more than her sister in her prostitutions.12 She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbors, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.13 Then I saw that she was defiled, that they took both one way.14 And that she increased her prostitutions: for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans pourtrayed with vermilion.15 Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity:16 And as soon as she saw them with her eyes she doted upon them, and sent messengers to them into Chaldea.17 And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their lewdness, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them.18 So she disclosed her lewd deeds, and exposed her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, as my mind was alienated from her sister.19 Yet she multiplied her prostitutions, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, in which she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.20 For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.21 Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, by being corrupted by the Egyptians in thy youth.22 Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;23 The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses.24 And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet on every side: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.25 And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thy ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.26 They shall also strip thee of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.27 Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy adultery brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thy eyes to them, nor remember Egypt any more.28 For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated:29 And they shall treat thee with hatred, and shall take away all thy labor, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy prostitutions shall be disclosed, both thy lewdness and thy prostitutions.30 I will do these things to thee, because thou hast gone astray after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols.31 Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thy hand.32 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be treated with scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.33 Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.34 Thou shalt even drink it, and empty it to the dregs, and thou shalt break its pieces, and pluck off thy own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.35 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy prostitutions.36 The LORD said moreover to me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yes, declare to them their abominations;37 That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.38 Moreover this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and lo, thus have they done in the midst of my house.40 And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, to whom a messenger was sent; and lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paint thy eyes, and deck thyself with ornaments,41 And sattest upon a stately bed and a table prepared before it, upon which thou hast set my incense and my oil.42 And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, who put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads.43 Then said I to her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit lewd deeds with her, and she with them?44 Yet they went in to her, as they go in to a woman that playeth the harlot: so they went in to Aholah and to Aholibah, the lewd women.45 And the righteous men, they shall judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.46 For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and plundered.47 And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn their houses with fire.48 Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness.49 And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.
