1 Mais uma vez recebi uma mensagem do Senhor que dizia assim:l2 Homem mortal, diz ao teu povo o seguinte: Quando trouxer um exército contra uma nação, e se o povo dessa terra tiver escolhido um homem para o constituir por vigia, quando este vir chegar as tropas inimigas e der o alarme, tocando a trombeta para avisar toda a gente, aquele que depois de a ouvir não lhe ligar importância, se vier a morrer, morrerá com a plena culpa que a sua atitude lhe acarretou. Porque ouviu o alarme e não quis prestar-lhe atenção. Tornou-se só ele culpado dos seus actos. Se tivesse dado ouvidos ao aviso, teria sido salvo.6 No entanto, se o vigia vir o inimigo chegar e não tocar a trombeta para avisar a população, será ele o responsável por todos os mortos que houver. Estes morrerão com a culpa dos seus pecados, mas pedirei contas dessas vidas ao vigia.7 Assim também é contigo, homem mortal. Nomeei-te vigia do povo de Israel; por isso ouve o que te digo e avisa-os. Quando eu disser ao iníquo, Ó homem malvado, certamente morrerás!, se não lhe deres esse recado da minha parte, que o leve a arrepender-se, esse iníquo morrerá carregado com os seus pecados, mas é a ti que pedirei contas pela sua morte. Contudo, se o avisares para que arrepie caminho, e se ele recusar, essa pessoa morrerá com a culpa dos seus pecados, mas a responsabilidade não será mais tua.10 Ó povo de Israel, vocês dizem: Os nossos pecados pesam sobre nós; desfalecemos debaixo da culpa que nos é imposta por causa deles. Como é que se pode viver assim?11 Responde-lhes então: Tão certo como eu viver, diz o Senhor Deus, que eu não tenho prazer na morte do pecador; o que eu pretendo é que ele se converta do seu mau caminho e que viva. Convertam-se, convertam-se da vossa vida de maldade; porque haviam vocês de morrer, ó Israel? Não são as boas acções da pessoa justa que a salvarão, se ela não se converter dos seus pecados; mas também não serão os pecados do que pratica a maldade que o destruirão, se ele se arrepender e abandonar a sua vida anterior.13 Eu disse que o homem recto com certeza viverá. Mas se ele vier a pecar, esperando que a sua vida passada, de justiça, acabe por salvá-lo, está enganado, pois o que ele foi anteriormente não será tomado em consideração; será destruído por causa dos seus pecados. Por outro lado, quando eu disser ao pecador que terá de morrer, se este se arrepender e passar a praticar a justiça e o bem - se restituir aquilo que extorquiu aos outros, fraudulentamente, aquilo que roubou; se passar a andar pelos caminhos da justiça e não mais praticar desonestidades - com toda a certeza que viverá; não morrerá. Nenhum dos seus anteriores pecados serão tomados em consideração contra ele; voltou-se para o caminho do bem; sem dúvida alguma que viverá.17 Pois mesmo assim o povo ainda diz que o Senhor não está a ser inteiramente justo. Mas eles é que não o são! Por isso torno a repetir: alguém que é uma pessoa recta, se cair no pecado, terá mesmo de morrer. Uma pessoa pecadora que abandona a sua vida má e começa a praticar o bem e a justiça, esse indubitavelmente viverá. Ainda que vocês digam que o Senhor não está a ser justo dessa maneira, o facto é que eu terei de julgar cada um de acordo com os seus actos.21 No ano onze do nosso exílio, no dia oito de Janeiro , um daqueles que escapou de Jerusalém correu para mim a dizer-me: A cidade foi tomada! A mão do Senhor tinha estado sobre mim durante a tarde. Por isso não me deixei abater e tive forças suficientes para falar nesse momento dramático. E foi esta mensagem que o Senhor me comunicou no momento:24 Homem mortal, a pouca gente que ficou de Judá, e que está a viver no meio das cidades arruinadas, continua a dizer: Abraão era um homem só e recebeu a posse desta terra toda! Nós somos muitos; portanto não vamos com certeza abandoná-la!25 Mas o Senhor Deus responde-lhes assim: Vocês estão enfraquecidos, porque praticam a maldade! Comem carne com sangue, adoram ídolos, praticam assassínios! E pensam que, com essas coisas todas, eu iria dar-vos a terra? Matam gente, praticam a idolatria, adulteram, e ainda por cima iam ficar com a terra?27 Diz-lhes então: O Senhor garante-vos, tão certo como ele ser um Deus vivo, que vocês, os que moram agora no meio de ruinas, acabarão por morrer na guerra; os que vivem no meio dos campos serão abatidos pelos animais selvagens; e ainda os que se abrigam nas cavernas, ou mesmo em construções de pedra, acabarão morrendo de doença. Tornarei essa terra numa assolação, o seu orgulho será abatido e cessará a fama da sua força. As povoações de Israel construídas no cimo dos montes ficarão tão destruídas que ninguém mais viverá nelas. Quando virem enfim a sua terra desfeita em ruínas, por causa dos seus pecados, então saberão que sou eu o Senhor.30 Homem mortal, o teu povo anda a conspirar nas tuas costas. Falam de ti quando estão em casa e murmuram a teu respeito à soleira das portas, dizendo: Venham daí, vamo-nos divertir ouvindo o que o Senhor tem hoje a dizer. Então aproximam-se, com o ar de quem é muito sincero, e sentam-se para ouvir. Mas por dentro não têm a mínima intenção de fazer o que lhes é mandado. Falam com hipocrisia sobre amar o Senhor, e nos seus corações o que reina é o amor do dinheiro. Tu, para eles, não passas de uma diversão como outra qualquer; é como se alguém se pusesse a cantar-lhes lindas canções, com uma bela voz e acompanhado por um bonito instrumento. Ouvem o que dizes, é verdade, mas não lhe ligam nenhuma importância! No entanto, quando todas estas terríveis coisas lhes acontecerem - e já estão para breve - nessa altura dar-se-ão conta de que realmente esteve no meio deles um profeta.

1 Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their borders, and set him for their watchman:3 If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he shall blow the trumpet, and warn the people;4 Then whoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword shall come and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.6 But if the watchman shall see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword shall come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.7 So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.8 When I say to the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thy hand.9 Nevertheless, if thou shalt warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he shall not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.10 Therefore, O thou son of man, speak to the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?11 Say to them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked should turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?12 Therefore, thou son of man, say to the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.13 When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he shall trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.14 Again, when I say to the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he shall turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;15 If the wicked shall restore the pledge, give again that which he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.16 None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned to him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.17 Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.18 When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, for that he shall even die.19 But if the wicked shall turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, for that he shall live.20 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.21 And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, The city is smitten.22 Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, before he that had escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.23 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,24 Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given to us for inheritance.25 Wherefore say to them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes towards your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?26 Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbor's wife: and shall ye possess the land?27 Say thou thus to them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that are in the forts and in the caves shall die by the pestilence.28 For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.29 Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.30 Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.31 And they come to thee as the people come, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.32 And lo, thou art to them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do not perform them.33 And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.
