1 São estes os nomes e as genealogias dos chefes que me acompanharam desde Babilónia durante o reinado do rei Artaxerxes:2 do clã de Itamar - Daniel o sub-clã de David, pertencente ao clã de Secanias - Hatús o clã de Parós - Zacarias, e cento e cinquenta outros homens o clã de Paate-Moabe - Elioenai (filho de Zeraías) e mais duzentos homens o clã de Secanias - (o filho de Jaaziel) e com ele trezentos homens o clã de Adim - Ebede (filho de Jónatas) e cinquenta homens o clã de Elão - Jesaías (filho de Atalias) e mais setenta homens o clã de Sefatias - Zebadias (filho de Micael) com oitenta homens o clã de Joabe - Obadias (filho de Jeiel) e duzentos e dezoito homens o clã de Bani - Selomite (filho de Josifias) e mais cento e sessenta homens; do clã de Bebai - Zacarias (filho de Bebai) e vinte e oito homens o clã de Azgade - Joanã (filho de Hacatã) e mais cento e dez homens o clã de Adonicão - Elifelete, Jeuel e Semaías, mais sessenta homens, que chegaram mais tarde o clã de Bigvai - Utai, Zacur e setenta outros homens.15 Juntámo-nos na margem do rio Aava, e ficámos ali acampados três dias enquanto verificava as listas do povo e dos sacerdotes que iam chegando. Verifiquei assim que não havia nem um só levita que se tivesse apresentado voluntariamente.16 Então mandei chamar Eliezer, Ariel, Semaías, Elnatã, Jaribe, Elnatã, Natã, Zacarias e Mesulão, líderes levitas; também mandei buscar Joiaribe e Elnatã, que eram sábios.17 Enviei-os depois a Ido, líder dos judeus em Casifia, para lhe pedir, a ele, aos seus irmãos e aos funcionários do templo, que nos mandassem sacerdotes para o templo de Deus em Jerusalém.18 E Deus foi bom para connosco! Mandou-nos um homem notável chamado Serebias mais os seus dezoito filhos e irmãos; trata-se de uma pessoa muito inteligente, descendente de Mali, filho de Levi e neto de Israel.19 Deus também fez que se apresentasse Hasabias, e Jesaías (filho de Merari) com vinte dos seus familiares, filhos e irmãos; vieram também duzentos e vinte funcionários do templo. (Estes funcionários do templo eram assistentes dos levitas - tratava-se de uma categoria instituída pela primeira vez pelo rei David.) Todos estes duzentos e vinte homens foram devidamente registados pelos seus nomes.21 Então proclamei um jejum enquanto ali estávamos, à beira do rio Aava, para nos humilharmos perante Deus; e orámos para que nos desse uma boa viagem e nos protegesse, assim como aos nossos filhos e bagagens, durante a deslocação, porque me envergonhei de pedir ao rei soldados a pé e a cavalo para nos acompanharem e nos protegerem dos inimigos durante o caminho. Ao fim e ao cabo tínhamos dito que o nosso Deus protege todos quantos o adoram e a desgraça só vem aos que o abandonam! Por isso jejuámos e implorámos Deus que cuidasse de nós. E ele assim fez.24 Designei doze chefes de entre os sacerdotes - Serebias, Hasabias e dez outros sacerdotes - para se responsabilizarem pelo transporte da prata, do ouro, dos recipientes em ouro e dos outros objectos que o rei e o seu conselho mais os líderes do povo de Israel tinham oferecido para o templo de Deus.26 Pesei o dinheiro quando lho entreguei e contei no total vinte toneladas de prata; avaliei também em três toneladas os vasos de prata e em outro tanto os de ouro. Havia também vinte taças de ouro que pesavam oito quilos. Entreguei-lhes igualmente duas belas taças de bronze, que eram tão preciosas com as de ouro.28 Consagrei estes homens ao Senhor e depois consagrei os tesouros - o equipamento, o dinheiro e as taças que tinham sido oferecidas voluntariamente ao Senhor Deus dos nossos pais.29 Vigiem bem sobre estes tesouros!, disse-lhes; terão de os apresentar sem a mínima perda aos sacerdotes e aos chefes dos levitas, assim como aos anciãos de Israel em Jerusalém, onde deverão ser colocados nos cofres do templo.30 Os sacerdotes e os levitas aceitaram a responsabilidade daquele transporte até ao templo de Deus em Jerusalém.31 Levantámos o acampamento de junto ao rio Aava no fim de Março e partimos para Jerusalém. Deus protegeu-nos e livrou-nos dos inimigos e dos bandidos durante todo o caminho, tendo chegado sãos e salvos a Jerusalém.33 No quarto dia após a chegada, todo o ouro e a prata e os outros valores foram pesados no templo por Meremote (filho de Urias o sacerdote), por Eleazar (filho de Finéias), por Jozabade (filho de Jesua) e por Noadias (filho de Binuí) - todos eles levitas. Foi passado um recibo por cada coisa entregue, e anotado o peso do ouro e da prata.35 Após isso toda a gente da nossa companhia ofereceu holocaustos ao Deus de Israel - doze bois por toda a nação de Israel, noventa e seis carneiros, setenta e sete cordeiros, doze bodes em sacrifício pelo pecado.36 Os decretos reais foram entregues aos seus representantes na terra e aos governadores de todas as províncias a ocidente do rio Eufrates, os quais colaboraram, eles próprios, nos trabalhos de reconstrução do templo de Deus.

the son of Josiphiah, and with him a hundred and sixty males.11 And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.12 And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him a hundred and ten males.13 And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them sixty males.14 Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.15 And I assembled them at the river that runneth to Ahava; and there we abode in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.16 Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.17 And I sent them with commandment to Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say to Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring to us ministers for the house of our God.18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;19 And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;20 Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.21 Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken to the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was entreated by us.24 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,25 And weighed to them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counselors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered:26 I even weighed to their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels a hundred talents, and of gold a hundred talents;27 Also twenty basins of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.28 And I said to them, Ye are holy to the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a free-will-offering to the LORD God of your fathers.29 Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them, before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.30 So the priests and the Levites took the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.31 Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.32 And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.33 Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;34 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time.35 Also the children of those that had been carried away, who had come out of the captivity, offered burnt-offerings to the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he-goats for a sin-offering: all this was a burnt-offering to the LORD.36 And they delivered the king's commissions to the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this side of the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
