1 Esta é a mensagem que Deus deu a Jeremias respeitante a todos os judeus que estavam a viver no norte do Egipto, nas cidades de Migdol, Tafnes e Menfis, assim como também por todo o sul do Egipto:2 O Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, o Deus de Israel, diz assim: Viram o que fiz a Jerusalém e a todas as cidades de Judá. Por causa da sua maldade é que estão agora em ruínas, desfeitas em cinzas, sem viva alma. A minha cólera foi enorme por causa deles terem adorado outros deuses - deuses esses que nem eles nem os seus antepassados jamais tinham sabido quem eram. Mandei os meus servos, os profetas, para que protestassem continuamente contra isso e que insistissem com eles para não fazerem tal coisa tão má; mas eles não quiseram ouvir-me e converterem-se dos seus caminhos perversos; continuaram sempre na mesma, oferecendo os seus sacrifícios a esses deuses. Assim a minha ira ferveu e caiu como fogo sobre as povoações de Judá, sobre as ruas de Jerusalém, que agora estão numa perfeita desolação, até ao dia de hoje.7 Por isso agora o Senhor, o Deus dos exércitos do céu, o Deus de Israel, vos pergunta: Porque se estão a destruir a si mesmos? Pois que nem um sequer de entre vocês viverá, seja homem, mulher ou criança, dos que vieram de Judá; nem sequer os bebés de mama. Pois até têm levantado a minha cólera com os ídolos que têm feito aqui no Egipto para adorarem, queimando-lhes incenso, fazendo com que eu vos destruía inteiramente, fazendo de vocês uma maldição, e como um cheiro repelente para todas as nações da Terra. Já se esqueceram dos pecados dos vossos pais, dos reis e rainhas de Judá, dos vossos próprios pecados e dos das vossas mulheres, em Judá e em Jerusalém? E até este preciso momento ainda não houve arrependimento da vossa parte; ninguém quis voltar para mim, seguir as leis que dei aos vossos pais antes de vocês.11 Por isso o Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, o Deus de Israel, vos diz: O meu rosto arde em cólera, e destruirei cada um de vocês! Tomarei esse remanescente que veio de Judá, que insistiu em vir aqui para o Egipto, e consumi-los-ei. Cairão aqui nesta terra, mortos pela fome e por causa de guerras; todos morrerão, do mais pequeno ao maior. Serão desprezados, detestados, amaldiçoados e odiados. Castigá-los-ei no Egipto, tal como os castiguei em Jerusalém, pela guerra, pela fome e pelas pragas.14 Dos sobreviventes de Judá, que vieram viver para o Egipto, nenhum escapará para poder voltar à terra de Judá, à qual tinham grande desejo de regressar; nenhum voltará senão um pequeno número de fugitivos.15 Então, todas as mulheres presentes, e todos os homens que sabiam que as suas mulheres tinham queimado incenso aos ídolos (era grande a multidão dos judeus ali no sul do Egipto) responderam a Jeremias:16 Não estamos interessados em dar ouvidos a essas tuas mensagens de Deus! Faremos o que bem nos apetece. Queimaremos incenso à Rainha dos Céus. Apresentar-lhe-emos sacrifícios, tanto quanto quisermos, tal como já nós próprios fizemos e os nossos pais antes de nós, assim como os nossos reis e os nobre sempre fizeram nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém; e nesses dias até tínhamos abundância de comida, tudo nos corria bem e éramos felizes! Mas desde o momento em que parámos de queimar incenso à Rainha dos Céus, e que deixámos de a adorar, temos estado em grande perturbação e fomos mesmo destruídos pela guerra e pela fome.19 E acrescentaram as mulheres, Julgas que nós adorávamos a Rainha dos Céus, derramávamos-lhe as nossas libações, fazíamos bolos com a sua imagem, tudo isso, sem os nossos maridos saberem e nos ajudarem nisso? Com certeza que não!20 Então Jeremias disse a todos, homens e mulheres, que lhe tinham dado aquela resposta:21 Pensam que o Senhor não sabia que vocês e os vossos pais, os vossos reis e nobres e todo o povo estavam a queimar incenso aos ídolos, nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém? Foi porque ele não podia suportar por mais tempo todas as maldades que vocês faziam que transformou a vossa terra numa desolação, numas ruínas incríveis, amaldiçoada, sem habitantes, como é o que hoje se vê. A verdadeira causa de todas essas coisas que vos aconteceram é que queimaram incenso e pecaram contra o Senhor, recusando obedecer-lhe.24 Jeremias disse-lhes mais a todos, incluindo as mulheres: Ouçam a palavra do Senhor vocês todos, cidadãos de Judá, que aqui estão no Egipto! O Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, o Deus de Israel, diz: Tanto vocês como as vossas mulheres dizem que nunca hão-de desistir das suas devoções e sacrifícios à Rainha dos Céus, e têm-no provado através dos vossos actos; pois então continuem e mantenham as promessas e votos que lhe têm feito! Mas ouçam bem a palavra do Senhor, vocês todos, judeus, vivendo nesta terra do Egipto: jurei pelo meu grande nome, diz o Senhor, que não adiantará nada procurarem a minha ajuda e a minha bênção mais vezes, dizendo: Ó Senhor nosso Deus, ajuda-nos! Porque na verdade estarei atento sobre vocês, sim, mas não é para o vosso bem! Terei cuidado em que vos aconteça o mal, e que sejam destruídos pela guerra e pela fome, até que estejam liquidados.28 Somente aqueles que voltarem para Judá - e serão apenas um pequeno resto de gente - escaparão à minha ira; os outros, que recusaram voltar para lá, que insistem em viver no Egipto, acabarão por verificar quem fala verdade, eu ou eles! E esta é a prova em como todo o mal que vos tenho prometido vos acontecerá, e que vos castigarei aqui mesmo; entregarei o faraó Hofra, rei de Egipto, nas mãos dos que procuram tirar-lhe a vida, tal como entreguei Zedequias, rei de Judá, nas mãos de Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who dwell in the land of Egypt, who dwell at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Noph, and in the country of Pathros, saying,2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth in them.3 Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods, whom they knew not, neither they, ye, nor your fathers.4 Yet I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.5 But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.6 Wherefore my fury and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as at this day.7 Therefore now thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Why do ye commit this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain;8 In that ye provoke me to wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye are gone to dwell, that ye may cut yourselves off, and that ye may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?9 Have ye forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives, which they have committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?10 They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.11 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, and to cut off all Judah.12 And I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, and they shall all be consumed, and fall in the land of Egypt; they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine: they shall die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine: and they shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.13 For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence:14 So that none of the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt, to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, and all the women that stood by, a great multitude, even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,16 As for the word that thou hast spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken to thee.17 But we will certainly do whatever thing proceedeth from our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings to her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then we had plenty of provisions, and were well, and saw no evil.18 But since we ceased to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.19 And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink-offerings to her, did we make for her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink-offerings to her, without our men?20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men, and to the women, and to all the people who had given him that answer, saying,21 The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?22 So that the LORD could no longer bear, because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which ye have committed; therefore is your land a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without an inhabitant, as at this day.23 Because ye have burned incense, and because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil hath happened to you, as at this day.24 Moreover, Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, Hear the word of the LORD, all Judah that are in the land of Egypt:25 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying; Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and fulfilled with your hand, saying, We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings to her: ye will surely accomplish your vows, and surely perform your vows.26 Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth.27 Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there shall be an end of them.28 Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, and all the remnant of Judah, that have gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall know whose words shall stand, mine, or theirs.29 And this shall be a sign to you, saith the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:30 Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.
