1 Num dia ao fim do Verão desse mesmo ano - o quarto do reinado de Zedequias, rei de Judá - Hananias (filho de Azur), um falso profeta de Gibeão, dirigiu-se-me publicamente, na frente dos sacerdotes e do povo, e disse:2 O Senhor dos exércitos celestiais, o Deus de Israel, declara: Já tirei o jugo do rei de Babilónia dos vossos pescoços. Dentro de dois anos trarei de novo para o templo os seus tesouros que Nabucodonozor transportou para Babilónia, e farei voltar o rei Jeconias (filho de Joaquim), rei de Judá, assim como todos os outros cativos exilados em Babilónia, diz o Senhor. É com toda a certeza que levantarei esse jugo posto sobre os vossos pescoços pelo rei de Babilónia.5 Então Jeremias disse a Hananias, ali mesmo, diante das mesmas pessoas: Amem! Assim as tuas profecias possam tornar-se realidade! O meu desejo seria na verdade que o Senhor trouxesse de Babilónia os tesouros deste templo, assim como todos os que amamos. Mas agora ouve bem as solenes palavras que tenho a dizer-te também na presença de todas estas pessoas. Os antigos profetas que nos precederam, a ti e a mim, falaram contra muitas nações, avisando sempre que haveria guerra, fome e pestes. Por isso, um profeta que prediz paz tem a grande responsabilidade sobre si, que é a de provar que Deus realmente o enviou. Só quando essa mensagem acontecer se saberá se realmente ela vem de Deus.10 Então Hananias, o falso profeta, pegou no jugo do pescoço de Jeremias e quebrou-o.11 Ao mesmo tempo que fazia isto dirigiu-se outra vez à multidão que assistia: O Senhor prometeu que dentro de dois anos libertará todos os povos agora escravizados por Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilónia. Jeremias retirou-se.12 No entanto, pouco tempo depois, o Senhor comunicou a Jeremias esta mensagem:Ò13 Vai dizer isto a Hananias: Assim diz o Senhor, o que tu quebraste outro dia foi apenas um jugo de madeira. Mas em seu lugar esta gente terá sobre si um jugo de ferro. O Senhor dos exércitos do céu, o Deus de Israel, diz - porei um jugo de ferro sobre o pescoço de todas estas nações, o que as obrigará à escravidão a Nabucodonozor, rei de Babilónia. E nada alterará este decreto; até porque lhe dei igualmente todos os vossos rebanhos e o vosso gado.15 Então Jeremias disse a Hananias, o falso profeta: Ouve Hananias, tu não foste enviado pelo Senhor, e contudo o povo está a acreditar nas tuas mentiras. Por isso Deus diz que deves morrer. Neste mesmo ano, ainda, a tua vida apagar-se-á, pois que te rebelaste contra o Senhor.17 E efectivamente, dois meses mais tarde, Hananias morreu.

1 And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, who was of Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests, and of all the people, saying,2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.3 Within two full years will I bring again into this place all the vessels of the LORD'S house, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place, and carried them to Babylon:4 And I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, that went into Babylon, saith the LORD; for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.5 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the LORD,6 Even the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen: the LORD do so: the LORD perform thy words which thou hast prophesied, to bring again the vessels of the LORD'S house, and all that is carried away captive, from Babylon into this place.7 Nevertheless, now hear thou this word that I speak in thy ears, and in the ears of all the people:8 The prophets that have been before me and before thee of old prophesied both against many countries, and against great kingdoms, of war, and of evil, and of pestilence.9 The prophet who prophesieth of peace, when the word of the prophet shall come to pass, then shall the prophet be known, that the LORD hath truly sent him.10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah's neck, and broke it.11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.12 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,13 Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.15 Then said the prophet Jeremiah to Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.16 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.
