1 E embora a promessa de Deus, de entrarmos no seu lugar de descanso, continue de pé, devemos ter muito cuidado quando alguns derem mostras de ficar para trás.2 Porque essas boas novas foram-nos anunciadas também a nós, tal como a eles. Mas se de nada lhes serviu, é porque não creram nelas, quando a ouviram.3 Quanto a nós, visto que cremos, temos a certeza de entrar no repouso de Deus. Quanto aos que não crêem, o Senhor disse:Na minha indignação obriguei-me com juramentoa não deixar que entrassem no meu repouso, embora este lugar de repouso esteja pronto desde a criação do mundo.4 Sabemos isto porque as Escrituras mencionam o sétimo dia, dizendo: E repousou Deus de todas as suas obras no sétimo dia. 45 Mas acontece que aqueles a quem foram pregadas as primeiras boas novas não entraram nesse repouso preparado, por causa da sua desobediência; por isso está escrito: Não entrarão no meu repouso. Contudo, isto dá a entender que ainda haverá alguém que deverá entrar nele.7 E é assim que fixa outra ocasião para entrar; essa ocasião é hoje. E isto diz Deus, pela boca de David, muito depois: Hoje, se ouvirem a sua voz,não endureçam os vossos corações.8 Porque, se esse repouso tivesse sido aquele para onde Josué conduziu o povo de Israel, Deus não teria falado mais tarde numa nova ocasião.9 Portanto é porque há ainda um repouso para o povo de Deus.10 Ora quem já entrou no descanso de Deus, também já descansou das suas obras, tal como Deus também das suas.11 Busquemos então tudo o que é necessário para entrar nesse lugar de descanso. Procuremos que ninguém, à semelhança do povo de Israel, caia na mesma incredulidade que eles.12 A palavra de Deus é viva e eficaz. É mais penetrante do que uma espada de dois gumes, chegando à distinção da alma e do espírito, como que à junção de osso e medula. Ela é capaz de distinguir os pensamentos, as intenções do coração.13 Não há nada em toda a criação que esteja escondido aos olhos de Deus; pelo contrário tudo está patente e a descoberto perante aquele a quem temos de prestar contas.14 Portanto, visto que temos um tão excelente supremo sacerdote, que é Jesus o Filho de Deus, que penetrou nos céus, mantenhamo-nos firmemente fiéis à fé que confessamos ter.15 Este nosso sacerdote supremo não é um simples homem que não possa compreender as nossas fraquezas. Pelo contrário, ele passou por todas as mesmas provas que nós, mas sem ter pecado.16 Portanto cheguemo-nos com confiança ao trono de Deus para podermos receber misericórdia e graça, e para sermos ajudados sempre que tivermos necessidade.

1 Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.2 For to us was the gospel preached, as well as to them: but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.3 For we who have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.4 For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested the seventh day from all his works.5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter into it, and they to whom it was first preached entered not because of unbelief:7 (Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To-day, after so long a time; as it is said, To-day, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then he would not afterward have spoken of another day.9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.10 For he that hath entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.)11 Let us labor therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.12 For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened to the eyes of him with whom we have to do.14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest, that hath passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.15 For we have not a high priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but who was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
