1 Por isso não continuemos sempre com as noções elementares da doutrina cristã, mas avancemos no sentido do amadurecimento. Não fiquemos como que a lançar de novo os mesmos alicerces, do arrependimento do pecado e das obras mortas, da necessidade da fé em Deus,2 do ensino referente ao baptismo, da imposição das mãos, da ressurreição de mortos e do julgamento eterno3 Mas, com a ajuda de Deus, avancemos agora para um conhecimento mais amadurecido.4 Se alguém já recebeu a luz de Deus, se provou das coisas celestiais, se participou do Espírito Santo,55 se viu como é boa a palavra de Deus e conheceu o poder do mundo que há-de vir, e,6 depois disto tudo, se afastou de Deus, não encontrará uma segunda oportunidade para arrependimento. É como se crucificassem novamente o Filho de Deus, expondo-o publicamente à afronta.7 Quando a terra lavrada recebe chuvas que caem com frequência sobre ela e produz boas colheitas para os que a cultivam, tem a bênção de Deus.8 Mas, se uma terra cria espinhos e cardos, não presta, e o lavrador queimá-la-á.9 Mas de vocês, meus queridos amigos, ainda que falemos assim, contamos que as vossas vidas produzam sempre os melhores frutos, que devem ser o resultado normal da vossa salvação.10 Deus não é injusto. Ele não se esquece do vosso trabalho e do amor que têm mostrado pelo Senhor, até pelos serviços que têm prestado - e continuam a prestar - aos crentes.11 E o nosso desejo é que cada um continue mostrando o mesmo zelo até ao fim da vida, até ao momento em que verão completamente realizada a vossa esperança.ÿ12 Não se tornem descuidados, mas procurem seguir o exemplo de todos aqueles que pela fé, e pela sua persistência, têm recebido o cumprimento das promessas de Deus.13 Quando Deus fez a promessa a Abraão, garantiu-a com um juramento feito sobre o seu próprio nome, visto que não havia ninguém maior do que ele.14 E disse: Garanto-te que te abençoarei efectivamente, e que terás uma descendência abundantíssima.15 Abraão então esperou com paciência, e viu a promessa concretizar-se.16 É evidente que os homens, quando prestam juramento, procuram fazê-lo por alguém que lhes seja superior, para que sirva de garantia e não haja assim nenhuma hipótese de desentendimento.17 Assim também Deus confirmou aquilo que disse com um juramento, a fim de que os que iriam receber a promessa ficassem com a certeza de que ele nunca mais mudaria os seus planos.18 Assim vemos que, por dois factores imutáveis - a promessa e o juramento - nós podemos confiar inteiramente nele. É pois impossível que Deus diga uma coisa que afinal não cumpra; e isso nos dá muita segurança, a nós para quem a esperança da vida eterna é como um refúgio19 é para a alma uma âncora segura e firme, que nos mantém ligados a Deus, no santuário mesmo da sua presença,20 onde Cristo entrou antes de nós e a favor de nós, agora na sua dignidade de supremo sacerdote da mesma linha de Melquisedeque.

1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith towards God,2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.3 And this will we do, if God permit.4 For it is impossible for those who have been once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit.5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh often upon it, and bringeth forth herbs fit for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh to cursing; whose end is to be burned.9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak.10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have shown towards his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.11 And we desire every one of you to show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope to the end:12 That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he swore by himself,14 Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.15 And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.16 For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all contradiction.17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to show to the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the vail;20 Whither the forerunner hath for us entered, even Jesus, made a high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
