1 Por esta altura Judá deixou a sua casa e foi viver em Adulão, com um homem chamado Hira.2 Aí encontrou uma rapariga cananita, com quem casou, e que era filha de um indivíduo de nome Suá. Foram viver para Quezibe e tiveram três filhos, Er, Onã e Sela. O primeiro foi o pai quem lhe deu o nome, os outros dois foi a mãe.6 Quando Er, o mais velho, se tornou grande Judá arranjou-lhe casamento com uma moça de nome Tamar. Mas Er tinha uma conduta muito censurável aos olhos de Deus, o qual, por isso, teve de lhe tirar a vida.8 Então Judá disse a Onã, o irmão a seguir de Er: Deves casar com Tamar, pois é o que a nossa lei exige do irmão de um homem que tenha morrido, de forma a que o primeiro filho que tiveres dela seja herdeiro do teu irmão.9 Mas Onã não estava de acordo em ter filhos que não viessem a ser considerados como seus, por isso, embora tendo aceitado esse casamento, quando se deitava com ela deixava a sua semente desperdiçar-se fora dela, a fim de evitar ter filhos que se tornassem descendentes do irmão.10 Isto que ele fazia era reprovado pelo Senhor; por isso também lhe tirou a vida.11 Então Judá disse a Tamar, a sua nora, que não se casasse mas que voltasse para a casa do pai e ali ficasse, no estado de viúva, até que Sela, o filho mais novo de Judá, crescesse e tivesse idade bastante para casar com ela. Contudo ao dizer isto a Tamar ele tinha receio que Deus também viesse a matar-lhe este filho, tal como os outros dois. E Tamar foi para casa dos seus pais.12 Com o decorrer do tempo, veio também a morrer a mulher de Judá. Este, depois de passar o tempo do luto, foi, com seu amigo Hira, o adulamita, vigiar o trabalho dos tosquiadores dos seus rebanhos, em Timna. E disseram a Tamar que o sogro ia a Timna ver os trabalhos da tosquia. Ela, constatando que Judá não tinha nenhuma intenção de deixar que o filho mais novo casasse com ela, apesar do moço já ser grande, tirou os vestidos de viúva, cobriu o rosto com um véu, arranjou-se de forma a que não a reconhecessem e foi sentar-se à beira do caminho, à entrada da localidade de Enaim, na estrada para Timna.15 Judá reparou nela quando passava por aquele sítio e tomou-a por uma mulher que se quisesse vender visto que não a reconheceu por ter o rosto encoberto. Por isso parou, foi ter com ela e convidou-a a vir deitar-se com ele; não sabendo portanto que se tratava da nora.Quanto me dás?, perguntou-lhe ela.17 Mando-te um cabrito do meu rebanho.E que penhor me dás tu como garantia do que prometes?18 Bom, que queres tu que te dê? Quero o teu selo identificador e a vara que tens na mão, respondeu-lhe. Ele aceitou; ela foi com Judá, e ficou grávida. Depois tornou a pôr os vestidos de viúva que trazia de costume.20 Judá pediu ao seu amigo Hira que levasse à mulher o cabrito prometido e trouxesse os penhores que lhe deixara. Contudo quando aquele foi à procura dela, não podia encontrá-la. E andou a perguntar aos homens do sítio se sabiam da prostituta que se punha junto ao caminho, ali à entrada de Enaim. Nós aqui nunca tivemos uma mulher dessas, responderam-lhe. Sendo assim voltou para Judá, dizendo-lhe que não a tinha encontrado e contando-lhe o que os homens de lá tinham dito.23 Paciência. Que fique então com o que já lá tem, conquanto não venhamos a cair em ridículo. Fizemos o que devíamos; mandei-lhe o cabrito, mas tu não a achaste.24 Uns três meses mais tarde vieram avisar Judá de que Tamar, a sua nora, estava grávida, evidentemente, por ter cometido adultério com alguém.Tragam-na, para que seja queimada!, gritou ele.25 Quando a foram buscar ela mandou um recado ao sogro: O homem que é dono deste selo identificador e desta vara é o pai do filho de que estou à espera. Reconhece-os?26 Judá admitiu que realmente as coisas eram dele e disse: Ela é mais justa do que eu, porque não cumpri a minha promessa de lhe dar o meu filho Sela. No entanto não casou com ela.27 No devido tempo Tamar deu à luz dois gêmeos. E quando estavam a nascer, aconteceu que a mão de um deles apareceu de fora, e a parteira pôs-lhe um fio vermelho à volta do pulso, assinalando-o como tendo sido o primeiro a aparecer; mas depois tornou a meter a mão dentro, e foi o outro quem veio a nascer primeiro. Como é isso, que conseguiste aparecer primeiro?, disse ela. E ficou a ser chamado Perez . Logo depois apareceu o irmão com o fio no pulso e chamaram-lhe Zera.

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in to her.3 And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.4 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.5 And she yet again conceived, and bore a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.6 And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, whose name was Tamar.7 And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.8 And Judah said to Onan, Go in to thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.9 And Onan knew that the seed would not be his: and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he frustrated the purpose, lest he should give seed to his brother.10 And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law, Remain a widow at thy father's house, till Shelah my son shall be grown; (for he said, Lest perhaps he die also as his brethren did:) and Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.12 And in process of time, the daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died: and Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep-shearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.13 And it was told to Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnath, to shear his sheep.14 And she put off from her, her widow's garments, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath: for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him for a wife.15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; because she had covered her face.16 And he turned to her by the way, and said, Come, I pray thee, let me have access to thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law:) and she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayst have access to me?17 And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock: and she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou sendest it?18 And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? and she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thy hand: and he gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.19 And she arose and went her way and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.20 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he found her not.21 Then he asked the men of that place, saying, where is the harlot that was openly by the way-side? and they said, There was no harlot in this place.22 And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.23 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told to Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and also, behold she is with child by lewdness: and Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, By the man whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son: and he knew her again no more.27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that behold, twins were in her womb.28 And it came to pass when she travailed, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.29 And it came to pass as he drew back his hand, that behold, his brother came out; and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.30 And afterwards came out his brother that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zarah.
