1 Os dois anjos chegaram nessa tarde a Sodoma. Lot estava ali sentado à entrada quando se aproximaram. Ao vê-los levantou-se, foi-lhes ao encontro para os receber e dar-lhes as boas vindas:2 Meus senhores, venham para a minha casa. Serão meus hóspedes esta noite. De manhã, à hora que quiserem, podem partir e continuar o caminho.Não, ficamos mesmo aqui na rua.3 Mas Lot tanto insistiu que aceitaram e foram para casa dele. E deu-lhes uma bela refeição; mandou até fazer bolos sem levedura para comerem.4 Quando se preparavam para se deitarem, vieram os sodomitas, os habitantes da cidade, do mais novo ao mais velho, e cercaram a casa, gritando para Lot: Traz-nos cá fora esses homens que aí tens. Queremos possuí-los!6 Lot saiu, fechou a porta atrás de si e falou-lhes:7 Meus amigos, imploro-vos que não façam uma coisa dessa, de tal maneira repulsiva! Olhem, tenho duas filhas, virgens. Trago-as cá fora e vocês fazem delas o que quiserem! Mas deixem estes homens em paz, porque estão sob a minha protecção!9 Sai daí!, berraram-lhe. Quem pensas tu que és? Deixamos este indivíduo fixar-se como estrangeiro aqui no meio da gente, e agora vem-se armar em juiz! Vamos mas é fazer-te a ti pior ainda do que a esses outros dois que estão lá dentro; e é já! E investiram na direcção de Lot, procurando arrombar o portão do gradeamento.10 Os dois homens contudo entreabriram a porta da casa, puxaram Lot para dentro e trancaram-se com segurança. E fizeram com que aqueles sodomitas que rodeavam a casa ficassem cegos, do mais pequeno ao mais velho, de tal forma que por fim cansaram-se de andar à procura da porta e desistiram.12 Que parentes tens tu aqui na cidade?, perguntaram os visitantes a Lot. Tira-os todos deste local: filhos, filhas, genros e mais alguém ainda que tenhas, porque vamos destruir completamente a cidade. O mau cheiro, pestilento, deste sítio chegou ao céu, e Deus enviou-nos para destruir isto tudo.14 Então Lot foi a correr ter com os seus futuros genros e disse-lhes: Depressa, saiam já da cidade, porque o Senhor vai destruí-la imediatamente!Mas os rapazes não fizerem mais do que pôr-se a olhar para ele como se tivesse perdido o juízo!15 Começava já a amanhecer, e os anjos iam dando cada vez mais pressa a Lot: Vamos, quanto antes! Pega já na tua mulher e nas tuas duas filhas que aqui vivem contigo e foge o mais rápido que puderes se não queres ser apanhado na destruição da cidade!16 Mas mesmo assim Lot hesitava e se demorava. Tiveram pois que pegar nele e na família pelas mãos e correram todos para fora da cidade; porque o Senhor teve misericórdia e deu-lhes ainda tempo suficiente para escaparem.17 Fujam se querem escapar com vida!, gritaram-lhes os anjos. E não olhem para trás. Escapem-se para as montanhas. Em todo o caso não se demorem de forma nenhuma por aí a atravessar a campina, porque se não, arriscam-se a morrer!18 E Lot replicou: Ah! Mas assim não, meus senhores! Já que foram tão bondosos para comigo, salvando-me a vida e tendo tanta piedade de nós, então se não se importassem deixavam-me fugir antes para aquela pequena localidade, ali ao fundo, porque estou com muito medo de ir para as montanhas e de ser apanhado lá em cima por esse mal que vai vir. Além disso é tão pertinho, essa povoação, e não passa dum simples lugarejo; não é verdade? Então deixem-me ir para lá e assim estarei seguro.21 Pois está bem, disse-lhe o anjo. Estou de acordo com mais esse teu pedido, e será assim maneira de poupar a pequena povoação de que falas. Mas despacha-te! Porque nada poderei fazer enquanto não tiveres lá chegado. Por isso, desde então aquela aldeia ficou a ser chamada Zoar, que quer dizer Pequena Cidade.23 O Sol já ia subindo quando Lot chegou enfim à tal localidade. Então o Senhor fez cair fogo e alcatrão incendiado do céu sobre Sodoma e Gomorra, e destruiu-as completamente, assim como também as outras cidades daquela planície toda, fazendo desaparecer tudo, tanto os seres humanos como a vida animal e vegetal.26 E a mulher de Lot olhou para trás, enquanto ia a fugir. Por isso ficou convertida numa estátua de sal!27 Nessa manhã Abraão levantou-se cedo e foi àquele local onde tinha estado a rogar a Deus. Olhando então para a campina de Sodoma e Gomorra só viu fumo que subia da terra, como se tudo fosse um gigantesco forno.29 Foi pois assim que Deus ouviu o rogo de Abraão e salvou a vida de Lot, tirando-o daquela destruição mortífera que caiu sobre a região.30 Depois disso Lot deixou Zoar, com medo da gente que ali havia, e foi viver para uma caverna na montanha com as duas filhas.31 Um dia a mais velha disse à irmã: Em toda esta região aqui à volta não há um só homem com quem o nosso pai nos deixe casar. E ele próprio em breve estará velho demais para ter filhos. Vamos enchê-lo de vinho, deitamo-nos com ele, e assim faremos com que haja descendentes e que a nossa família não acabe aqui.33 Assim embriagaram o pai naquela noite, e a mais velha foi deitar-se com ele, que aliás não deu por nada, nem quando ela veio, nem quando se foi embora.34 Na manhã seguinte disse à irmã: Pronto! Ontem à noite já me deitei com o pai! Vamos enchê-lo outra vez de vinho para que a nossa família não acabe.35 E assim chegando à noite embriagaram-no de novo e foi a vez da mais nova se deitar com ele, que, tal como na véspera, não deu por nada. As duas raparigas ficaram grávidas. E a mais velha teve um filho a que deu o nome de Moabe, o antecessor dos moabitas. E o nome do filho da segunda foi Benami, o pai de todos os amonitas.

1 And there came two angels to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot seeing them, rose to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face towards the ground;2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.3 And he urged them greatly; and they turned in to him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:5 And they called to Lot, and said to him, Where are the men who came in to thee this night? bring them out to us, that we may know them.6 And Lot went out at the door to them, and shut the door after him,7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.8 Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out to you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only to these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one man came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: Now will we deal worse with thee than with them. And they pressed hard upon the man, Lot, and came near to break the door.10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.12 And the men said to Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them has become great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.14 And Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said, Arise, depart from this place; for the LORD will destroy this city: but he seemed to his sons-in-law as one that mocked.15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters who are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters: the LORD being merciful to him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life: look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain: escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.18 And Lot said to them, Oh, not so, my Lord!19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shown to me in saving my life: and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil should take me, and I die:20 Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a small one: Oh, let me escape thither! (Is it not a small one?) and my soul shall live.21 And he said to him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for which thou hast spoken.22 Haste thee, escape thither: for I cannot do any thing till thou hast come thither: therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.23 The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.27 And Abraham rose early in the morning, to the place were he stood before the LORD:28 And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrah, and towards all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.30 And Lot went up from Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he, and his two daughters.31 And the first-born said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth:32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the first-born went in and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.34 And it came to pass on the morrow that the first born said to the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father; let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.37 And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites to this day.38 And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.
