1 Venham, voltemos para o Senhor; foi ele quem nos despedaçou - será ele quem nos há-de curar. Fez a ferida - tratará dela.2 Daqui a dois dias, nos dará a vida; ao terceiro, nos ressuscitará, e viveremos diante dele.3 Oh! Que possamos conhecer o Senhor! Apressemo-nos a conhecê-lo; responder-nos-á tão seguramente como o aparecimento da alva todas as manhãs, ou como a chuva da Primavera que rega a terra.4 Ó Efraim e Judá, que hei-de eu fazer convosco? Porque o teu amor desaparece como as nuvens pela manhã, ou como o orvalho com o nascer do Sol.5 Mandei os meus profetas para te advertirem da minha condenação; abati-te com as minhas palavras, ameaçando-te de morte. De repente, sem aviso, os meus juízos cairão sobre ti tão certo como o dia seguir-se à noite.6 Mais do que os vossos sacrifícios quero a vossa bondade; mais do que os vossos holocaustos quero o conhecimento de Deus.7 Mas, à semelhança de Adão, quebraste a minha aliança; recusaste o meu amor.8 Gileade é uma cidade de pecadores, cheias de traços de sangue.9 Os seus cidadãos são bandos de salteadores, armando ciladas às suas vítimas; magotes de sacerdotes põem-se ao longo do caminho para Siquem e praticam toda a espécie de abominações.10 Sim, eu vi uma coisa horrível em Israel - Efraim andando atrás dos ídolos, Israel contaminando-se.11 Ó Judá, para ti igualmente haverá uma abundante seara de castigos, que espera por ti - e eu queria tanto abençoar-te!
1 Come, and let us return to the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.2 After two days will he revive us: in the third day will he raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.3 Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he will come to us as the rain, as the latter and former rain to the earth.4 O Ephraim, what shall I do to thee? O Judah, what shall I do to thee? for your goodness is as the morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away.5 Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice: and the knowledge of God more than burnt-offerings.7 But they like men have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.8 Gilead is a city of them that work iniquity, and is polluted with blood.9 And as troops of robbers wait for a man, so the company of priests murder in the way by consent: for they commit lewdness.10 I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel: there is the prostitution of Ephraim, Israel is defiled.11 Also, O Judah, he hath set a harvest for thee, when I returned the captivity of my people.
