1 Toquem a trombeta de alarme! Eles aproximam-se! Como aves de rapina, o inimigo abate-se sobre o povo de Deus, porque quebrou a aliança que fizera comigo e se revoltou contra as minhas leis.2 E agora Israel clama junto de mim dizendo: Socorre-nos, porque és o nosso Deus!3 Mas é demasiado tarde! Israel rejeitou o bom momento com violência, e agora serão os seus inimigos a perseguí-lo.4 Designou os reis e os governantes que havia de ter, mas tudo sem o meu consentimento. Separam-se da minha ajuda, prestando culto a outros deuses que fabricaram com prata e com ouro.5 Ó Samaria, rejeita em absoluto esse bezerro, esse ídolo, que fizeste. A minha ira acende-se contra ti. Quanto tempo haverá ainda até que se encontre no meio de ti um homem honesto? Quando será, enfim, que reconheces que esse bezerro não passa de um objecto feito por mãos humanas? Não é Deus! Por consequência terá de ser feito em pedaços.7 Semearam ventos, colherão tempestades. As suas searas não deram frutos nenhuns, não têm farinha; e se alguma se encontra, serão os estrangeiros que a comerão.8 Israel está destruído; jaz no meio das nações como uma bilha de barro feita em cacos.9 É como um jumento solitário, selvagem, a vaguear por toda a parte. Os únicos amigos que tem são os que compra; a Assíria é um deles.10 Mas ainda que consiga alugar amigos de várias regiões, mandá-la-ei para o exílio. Por isso, pelo menos durante algum tempo, ficará livre do peso do seu maravilhoso rei!11 Efraim construiu muitos altares, mas não são para me prestar culto! São altares de pecado!12 Dei-lhes muitas leis, mas eram para eles coisas estranhas.13 Esse povo ama o ritual dos sacrifícios, mas para mim eles não têm significado! Farei um rol de todos os seus pecados e serão castigados; regressarão ao Egipto.14 Israel construiu grandes palácios; Judá edificou grandes defesas das suas cidades, contudo esqueceram-se do grande construtor. Eis a razão por que mandarei fogo sobre esses palácios e queimarei essas fortalezas.

1 Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law.2 Israel shall cry to me, My God, we know thee.3 Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him.4 They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made for themselves idols, that they may be cut off.5 Thy calf, O Samaria, hath cast thee off; my anger is kindled against them: how long will it be ere they attain to innocence?6 For from Israel was it also: the workman made it; therefore it is not God: but the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if it shall yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.8 Israel is swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel in which is no pleasure.9 For they have gone up to Assyria, a wild ass alone by himself: Ephraim hath hired lovers.10 Yes, though they have hired among the nations, now will I gather them, and they shall sorrow a little for the burden of the king of princes.11 Because Ephraim hath made many altars to sin, altars shall be to him to sin.12 I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange thing.13 They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of my offerings, and eat it; but the LORD accepteth them not; now will he remember their iniquity, and visit their sins: they shall return to Egypt.14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fortified cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof.
