1 Débora e Baraque compuseram então e cantaram este cântico de vitória:2 Louvem o Senhor! Os líderes de Israel conduziram corajosamente o povo. Este seguiu-os de cabeça erguida.Sim, bendito seja o Senhor!3 Escutem, vocês, reis e governantes,porque vou cantar ao Senhor, o Deus de Israel.4 Quando nos fizeste sair de Seir,e nos levaste através dos campos de Edom, a terra tremeu,os céus derramaram chuvas.5 Sim, até o Monte Sinai tremeu na presença do Deus de Israel.6 Nos dias de Sangar, o filho de Anate; e nos dias de Jael,as grandes estradas ficaram desertas;e os viajantes preferiram ir pelos estreitos atalhos retorcidos.7 O povo de Israel estava a decair a olhos vistos;até que apareceu Débora,que se tornou como que uma mãe para Israel.8 Quando Israel vai atrás de deuses estrangeiros,é a derrocada de tudo, é guerra. Os senhores que nos dominavam não permitiam sequer que tivéssemos um escudo ou uma lança nas nossas mãos. Entre quarenta mil soldados israelitas não se encontra uma só arma!9 Como me alegro nos chefes de Israel,que tão generosamente se deram a si próprios! Louvem o Senhor!10 Que Israel inteiro, ricos e pobres, se juntem nos seus louvores, tanto os que andam montados em brancos jumentos e pisam tapetes ricos em casa,como os que têm de andar a pé pelos caminhos.11 Os músicos de cada povoação juntam-se no poço da vila,para exaltar os triunfos do Senhor. Sem cessar, fazem suceder os hinos e baladas,sobre como o Senhor salvou Israelcom um exército de combatentes! O povo do Senhor passou as portas das cidades.12 Levanta-te, Débora, e canta! Ergue-te, Baraque! Tu, filho de Abinoão,chega-te, com os teus prisioneiros!13 Descendo o monte Tabor via-se o nobre resto do povo. O povo do Senhor desceu avançando contra grandes pessoas.14 Vieram de Efraim e de Benjamim, de Maquir e de Zebulão.15 Veio até ao vale essa nobre gente de Issacar,com Débora e com Baraque. À ordem de Deus acorreram todos ao vale. Contudo, a tribo de Rúben não se deslocou.16 Porque ficas sentado em casa, no meio dos rebanhos, ouvindo os balidos dos animais e as flautas dos pastores? Sim, a tribo de Rúben não pode estar com a consciência descansada.17 Porque ficou também Gileade do lado de lá do Jordão, e porque razão Dan ficou à beira dos seus barcos? E qual a razão que levou Aser a deixar-se estar impassível, nas praias, descansando junto aos seus portos?18 Mas as tribos de Zebulão e de Naftali não tiveram medo de morrer nos campos de batalha.19 Os reis de Canaã lutaram em Taanaque, junto às fontes de Megido, mas não foram vitoriosos.20 Até as próprias estrelas do céu lutaram contra Sísera.21 O veloz ribeiro de Quisom os arrastou, os varreu. Avante, alma minha, corajosamente!22 Ouve o trotar dos cascos da cavalaria inimiga! Observa o galopar dos seus corcéis!23 Pois apesar disso o anjo de Jeová amaldiçoou Meroz, Que os seus habitantes sejam asperamente amaldiçoados, disse. Porque não quiseram empenhar-se na luta do Senhorcontra os seus inimigos.24 Bendita seja Jael, a mulher de Heber, o queneu. Sim, que ela seja abençoada,acima de todas as mulheres, nos seus lares.25 Pediu-lhe água, e ela deu-lhe leite, numa bela chávena.26 Mas depois, pegou numa estaca, num martelo,cravou-a na fonte de Sísera, rachando-lhe a cabeça, atravessando-a de lado a lado.27 Ele ali ficou prostrado a seus pés, sem vida.28 A mãe de Sísera bem olhava pela janela, esperando o seu regresso: Mas porque é que o seu carro demora tanto a regressar? Porque é que não se ouve ainda o barulho do rodado dos carros pelo caminho?29 As amigas que lhe faziam companhia, respondiam-lhe, e ela concordava:30 É que deve haver grande despojo a repartir. E isso leva tempo. Cada homem fica com uma ou duas raparigas. Sim, acrescentava ela, Sísera há-de trazer vestidos de lindas cores,e muitos presentes para me oferecer.31 Depois disto acontecer, houve paz na terra durante quarenta anos.

1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,2 Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.3 Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.4 LORD, when thou wentest out of Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.6 In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through by-ways.7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?9 My heart is towards the governors of Israel that offered themselves willingly among the people: Bless ye the LORD.10 Speak, ye that ride on white asses, ye that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts towards the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.12 Awake, awake, Deborah; awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak, and lead thy captivity captive, thou son of Abinoam.13 Then he made him that remaineth have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek; after thee, Benjamin, among thy people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah: even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.16 Why abodest thou among the sheep-folds, to hear the bleatings of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there were great searchings of heart.17 Gilead abode beyond Jordan: and why did Dan remain in ships? Asher continued on the sea-shore, and abode in his breaches.18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives to death in the high places of the field.19 The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Tanach by the waters of Megiddo; they took no gain of money.20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera.21 The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.22 Then were the horse's hoofs broken by the means of the prancings, the prancings of their mighty ones.23 Curse ye Meroz, said the angel of the LORD, curse ye bitterly its inhabitants; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.24 Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.25 He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.26 She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and struck through his temples.27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.28 The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?29 Her wise ladies answered her, yes, she returned answer to herself.30 Have they not found; have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of needle-work, of divers colors of needle-work on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?31 So let all thy enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
