1 Jerubaal (ou seja, Gedeão) e o seu exército partiram muito cedo pela manhã e chegaram até à fonte de Harode. Os exércitos de Midiã estavam acampados a norte, no fundo do vale, por detrás da colina de Moré.2 O Senhor disse então a Gedeão: Há gente demais contigo. Não posso deixar todos esses homens lutar contra os midianitas, porque se assim fosse o povo de Israel haveria de se gabar de que por si próprios se tinham salvo, devido à sua própria força! Manda para casa todos os que estiverem receosos e acobardados. E foi assim que nada menos do que vinte e dois mil homens se foram embora, e só dez mil ficaram, decididos a combater.4 Mas o Senhor tornou a dizer a Gedeão: Há ainda gente a mais! Leva-os até à fonte e mostrar-te-ei lá quais são os que irão contigo e quais os que terão de ficar de parte.5 Gedeão juntou-os à beira da água, e ali mesmo o Senhor lhe disse: Divide-os em dois grupos, de acordo com o modo como bebem. Porás de um lado os que beberem a água, lambendo-a como os cães, do outro ficarão os que se ajoelharem e puserem a boca mesmo na água para beberem. E apenas trezentos homens beberam com as mãos; todos os outros se inclinaram com a boca até à corrente.7 Conquistarei os midianitas com estes trezentos, disse o Senhor a Gedeão. Manda o resto para casa!8 Gedeão, fez recolher todos os jarros de barro e as trombetas que havia entre eles, e enviou-os para casa, ficando apenas com os tais trezentos.9 Nessa noite, com os midianitas ali acampados em baixo no vale, o Senhor disse a Gedeão: Levanta-te. Manda formar os teus homens e ataca os midianitas, pois farei com que os derrotes.10 No entanto, se houver em ti ainda algum receio, desce primeiro ao acampamento inimigo; leva só contigo o teu ajudante Purá, se quiseres; e escuta o que lá estão a dizer em baixo. Vais ver que isso te dará muito alento e desejo de atacar!Ele pegou em Purá e desceu na escuridão até ao limite do acampamento deles, junto das sentinelas mais avançadas do inimigo.12 Ali se encontravam todos aqueles vastos exércitos de Midiã, de Ameleque e das outras nações orientais, concentrados por todo o vale, numa multidão compacta que lembrava uma praga de gafanhotos, dava até a ideia da areia da praia; e eram incontáveis os seus camelos!13 Gedeão rastejou em direcção a uma das tendas; quando lá chegou junto, acabava de acordar um dos homens, o qual tinha tido um pesadelo e contava-o ao camarada: Sonhei com uma coisa muito estranha, estava ele a dizer, era um grande pão de cevada que vinha rolando lá de cima sobre o nosso campo, caía em cima das tendas e deitava-as todas abaixo!14 O outro soldado respondeu-lhe: Podes ter a certeza de que esse teu sonho só pode ter um significado. É Gedeão filho de Joás, o israelita, que vai vir massacrar todas as forças aliadas de Midiã!15 Quando Gedeão ouviu aquilo, tanto o sonho como a interpretação, louvou o Senhor. Após o que regressou para junto dos seus homens e gritou-lhes: Todos de pé! O Senhor vai usar-vos para derrotar estes grandes exércitos de Midiã!16 Dividiu os trezentos soldados em três grupos, deu a cada um dos homens uma trombeta e um jarro de barro com uma tocha acesa dentro. Depois explicou-lhes o seu plano. Quando chegarmos às primeiras sentinelas do campo inimigo façam todos como eu. Assim que me ouvirem a mim e aos que estão comigo soprarmos nas trombetas, devem fazer o mesmo em toda a volta do acampamento e gritem assim: Combatemos por Deus e por Gedeão!19 Passava pouco da meia-noite e da altura do render das sentinelas, quando Gedeão e os cem que ficaram com ele rastejaram até ao limite do campo dos midianitas. Subitamente sopraram nas trombetas; logo a seguir partiram os jarros de forma que as luzes que ardiam lá dentro brilharam na noite. Os outros duzentos fizeram imediatamente o mesmo, soprando as trombetas com a mão direita, levantando as tochas acesas com a outra, e todos gritando. Uma espada pelo Senhor e por Gedeão!21 Ficaram-se assim a ver o que acontecia; todo aquele imenso exército inimigo começou a andar às voltas sem tino, gritando de pânico e desatando a fugir. Naquela confusão toda, o Senhor fez com que as tropas inimigas começassem a lutar entre si, matando-se uns aos outros, e isto duma ponta à outra do acampamento; muitos conseguiram fugir, correndo até Bete-Sita perto de Zerará, e até à entrada de Abel-Meolá acima de Tabate.23 Gedeão mandou mensageiros às tropas de Naftali, de Aser e de Manassés para que os perseguissem, e destruíssem aquela gente toda do exército de Midiã que fugia. Mandou igualmente mensageiros pelas colinas de Efraim, convocando tropas para que tomassem os baixios do Jordão, em Bete-Bará, a fim de evitar que os midianitas passassem ali a pé para o outro lado e escapassem. Orebe e Zeebe, dois generais midianitas, foram capturados. Orebe foi morto numa rocha agora conhecida pelo seu nome, e Zeebe foi morto no lagar de Zeebe, tal como também é conhecido hoje em dia. Os israelitas pegaram nas cabeças dum e doutro, atravessaram o Jordão e trouxeram-nas a Gedeão.

1 Then Jerubbaal (who is Gideon) and all the people that were with him, rose early, and encamped beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.2 And the LORD said to Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, My own hand hath saved me.3 Now therefore, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.4 And the LORD said to Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down to the water, and I will try them for thee there; and it shall be, that of whom I say to thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say to thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.5 So he brought down the people to the water: and the LORD said to Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.7 And the LORD said to Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thy hand: and let all the other people go every man to his place.8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent of all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. And the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.9 And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said to him, Arise, go down to the host; for I have delivered it into thy hand.10 But if thou fearest to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thy hands be strengthened to go down to the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant to the outside of the armed men that were in the host.12 And the Midianites, and the Amalekites, and all the children of the east, lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.13 And when Gideon had come, behold, there was a man that told a dream to his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and lo, a cake of barley-bread rolled into the host of Midian, and came to a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it that the tent lay along.14 And his fellow answered, and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped, and returned to the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.17 And he said to them, Look on me, and do likewise: and behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that as I do, so shall ye do.18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came to the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers that were in their hands.20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow with: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.21 And they stood every man in his place around the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zereroth, and to the border of Abel-meholah, to Tabbath.23 And the men of Israel assembled out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites.24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters to Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim assembled, and took the waters to Beth-barah and Jordan.25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the wine-press of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side of Jordan.
