1 Após a morte de Josué, a nação de Israel consultou o Senhor para receber as suas instruções. Qual será a tribo que deverá ir primeiro à guerra contra os cananeus?, perguntaram.2 A resposta de Deus foi: Judá. E dar-lhe-ei uma grande vitória.3 Os líderes da tribo de Judá, contudo, pediram auxílio à tribo de Simeão: Venham connosco lutar contra o povo que está ainda na porção de terra que nos coube em sorte, e depois seremos nós a ajudar-vos a conquistar o vossa parte. E assim o exército de Simeão foi com o de Judá.4 O Senhor ajudou-os a derrotarem os cananeus e os perizeus, de tal forma que houve dez mil baixas, da parte do inimigo, em Bezeque.6 O rei Adoni-Bezeque conseguiu fugir, mas o exército de Israel em breve o capturou, e cortaram-lhe os dedos polegares dos pés e das mãos.7 Fiz isto mesmo a setenta outros reis que depois andavam a apanhar migalhas debaixo da minha mesa!, dizia o rei Adoni-Bezeque. Agora Deus pagou-me da mesma moeda. Foi levado para Jerusalém e lá morreu.8 Judá tinha conquistado Jerusalém e destruído o seu povo, pondo fogo à cidade.9 Depois o exército de Judá combateu os cananeus na região das colinas, no Negueve e nas planícies costeiras. Posteriormente retomou a luta contra eles em Hebrom (antigamente chamada Quiriate-Arba), destruindo-lhes as cidades de Sesai, Aimã e Talmai. Por último atacaram a cidade de Debir (antigamente chamada Quiriate-Sefer).12 Quem vai comandar o ataque contra Debir?, desafiou Calebe. Quem a conquistar terá a minha filha Acsa como mulher!13 O sobrinho de Calebe, Otniel, filho do seu irmão mais novo Quenaz, ofereceu-se voluntariamente para chefiar o ataque. Conquistou assim a cidade e obteve Acsa como esposa.14 Quando estavam para ir viver juntos para o seu novo lar, ele pediu-lhe insistentemente que pedisse ao pai mais terra para eles. E foi ela própria que, vendo seu pai Calebe, desceu da montada em que ia para lhe falar no assunto. Que pretendes?, disse-lhe o pai ao vê-la aproximar-se.15 Foi muito bom da tua parte dares-me terra no Negueve, mas peço-te que nos dês também fontes de água. E dessa forma Calebe deu-lhe fontes de água superiores e inferiores.16 Quando a tribo de Judá foi instalar-se no seu novo território, no deserto do Negueve, ao sul de Arade, os descendentes do sogro de Moisés - membros do grupo dos queneus - acompanharam-nos. Deixaram as suas casas em Jericó, a cidade das palmeiras, e passaram assim a viver juntos com a tribo de Judá.17 Posteriormente a tribo de Judá juntou-se à de Simeão para combater os cananeus na cidade de Zefate, e destruíram a população. Assim a cidade passou a ser chamada Orma (que quer dizer, massacrado).18 O exército de Judá conquistou igualmente as cidades de Gaza, de Asquelon e de Ecrom, com as localidades da sua jurisdição.19 O Senhor ajudou a tribo de Judá a exterminar o povo das colinas, ainda que tivessem falhado na tentativa de conquistar o do vale, que tinha carros de ferro.20 A cidade de Hebrom foi dada a Calebe, conforme a promessa do Senhor. Assim Calebe lançou fora os seus habitantes, que eram descendentes dos três filhos de Anaque.21 A tribo de Benjamim não exterminou os jebuseus que viviam em Jerusalém; por isso ainda lá vivem hoje misturados com os israelitas.22 Quanto aos da tribo de José, atacaram a cidade de Betel, anteriormente conhecida por Luz, e o Senhor esteve com eles. Primeiro enviaram espias que capturaram um homem que vinha a sair da cidade. Propuseram-lhe poupar a vida dele e da sua família se desse a conhecer a passagem através da muralha para entrar na cidade. O homem concordou, mostrou-lhes como entrar lá dentro, e eles massacraram a população toda excepto o homem com a sua família. Mais tarde aquele indivíduo foi para a Síria e edificou lá uma cidade a que chamou também Luz, como é ainda conhecida hoje.27 A tribo de Manassés também não expulsou o povo que vivia em Bete-Seã, Taanaque, Dor, Ebleão e Megido, nem tão pouco nos lugares circunvizinhos; e assim os cananeus continuaram a viver ali. Anos mais tarde, quando os israelitas se tornaram mais fortes, puseram os cananeus a trabalhar como escravos, mas nunca os forçaram a deixar o território. Aconteceu o mesmo aliás com os cananeus que viviam em Gezer; ainda lá estão habitando no meio da tribo de Efraim.30 A tribo de Zebulão também não destruiu o povo de Quitrom, nem de Naalol, mas fizeram-nos seus escravos; a tribo de Aser da mesma forma não expulsou os residentes de Aco, de Sidom, de Alabe, de Aczibe, de Helba, de Afeca, nem de Reobe; assim os israelitas vivem ainda entre os cananeus que eram o povo indígena daquela terra. O mesmo se deu com a tribo de Naftali que não pôs fora o povo de Bete-Semes nem de Bete-Anate; e essa gente continua a viver com eles como servos.34 Quanto à tribo de Dan, os amorreus forçaram-nos a circunscreverem-se à região das colinas e não os deixaram descer para os vales; mas quando mais tarde os amorreus tentaram espalhar-se pelas montanhas de Heres, de Aijalom e de Saalabim, a tribo de José dominou-os e fez deles escravos. A fronteira dos amorreus começa na subida da passagem do escorpião, desce a um lugar chamado a rocha e continua dali para cima.

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first to fight against them?2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.3 And Judah said to Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.4 And Judah went up, and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.5 And they found Adoni-bezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.6 But Adoni-bezek fled; and they pursued him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.7 And Adoni-bezek said, seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table; as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.8 (Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.)9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites that dwelt on the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter for a wife.13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter for a wife.14 And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said to her, What wilt thou?15 And she said to him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses's father-in-law, went up out of the city of palm-trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.18 Also Judah took Gaza with its border, and Askelon with its border, and Ekron with its border.19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drove out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el: and the LORD was with them.23 And the house of Joseph sent to explore Beth-el. Now the name of the city before was Luz.24 And the spies saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will show thee mercy.25 And when he showed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but they let go the man and all his family.26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name of it Luz: which is its name to this day.27 Neither did Manasseh expel the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor Tanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.28 And it came to pass when Israel was strong, that they subjected the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly expel them.29 Neither did Ephraim expel the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.30 Neither did Zebulun expel the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.31 Neither did Asher expel the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not expel them.33 Neither did Naphtali expel the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became tributaries to them.34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan to the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Ajalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.36 And the border of the Amorites was from the ascent to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
